A Cu/Zn heterometallic complex with solvent-binding cavity, catalytic activity for the oxidation of 1-phenylethanol and unusual magnetic properties
PublicationMononuclear and polymeric complexes of zinc(II) and copper(II) have been synthesized using two isomers of the hemi-salen ligand with a different mutual orientation of donor atoms. The heterometallic Cu/Zn metallocycle features a catalytic niche filled with the molecule of water and molecules of methanol. This unusual compound exhibits both pronounced catalytic activity in the reaction of oxidation of a secondary alcohol to ketone...

Benchmarking Parallel Chess Search in Stockfish on Intel Xeon and Intel Xeon Phi Processors
PublicationThe paper presents results from benchmarking the parallel multithreaded Stockfish chess engine on selected multi- and many-core processors. It is shown how the strength of play for an n-thread version compares to 1-thread version on both Intel Xeon and latest Intel Xeon Phi x200 processors. Results such as the number of wins, losses and draws are presented and how these change for growing numbers of threads. Impact of using particular...

Experimental results of full scattering profile from finger tissue-like phantom
PublicationHuman tissue is one of the most complex optical media since it is turbid and nonhomogeneous. We suggest a new optical method for sensing physiological tissue state, based on the collection of the ejected light at all exit angles, to receive the full scattering profile. We built a unique set-up for noninvasive encircled measurement. We use a laser, a photodetector and finger tissues-mimicking phantoms presenting different optical...

Optical method for verification of homogeneity of phantoms for calibration of magnetic resonance
PublicationThe primary purpose of this study was to develop a laboratory photonic set-up for characterisation of homogeneity of gel phantoms for calibration of magnetic resonance. In this system, optical coherence tomography allows the detection of micro- and macroscopic heterogeneities of a structure. The set-up was used to perform measurements of agar and agar-carrageenan gels, which are the basis for more complex phantoms for magnetic...

Multi-layered tissue head phantoms for noninvasive optical diagnostics
PublicationExtensive research in the area of optical sensing for medical diagnostics requires development of tissue phantoms with optical properties similar to those of living human tissues. Development and improvement of in vivo optical measurement systems requires the use of stable tissue phantoms with known characteristics, which are mainly used for calibration of such systems and testing their performance over time. Optical and mechanical...

Chemical surface etching methods for ground tire rubber as sustainable approach for environmentally-friendly composites development– a review
PublicationGround tire rubber (GTR) has been used as a sustainable low-cost modifier in various composites. However, due to the hydrophobic nature of GTR, it is in compatible with most matrices and results in deterioration in both mechanical and physical properties of composites. This necessitates pre-modification of the powdered rubber to improve the interfacial bonding at the rubber-matric interface. The most common GTR modification research...

Attitudes of Polish physicians, nurses and pharmacists towards the ethical and legal aspects of the conscience clause
PublicationBackground: While healthcare professionals’ right to invoke the conscience clause has been recognised as a fundamental human right, it continues to provoke a heated debate in Polish society. Although public discourse is filled with ethical and legal considerations on the conscience clause, much less is known about the attitudes of healthcare professionals regarding that matter. The aim of this study was therefore...

An Efficient Simulation Method of Massive MIMO Antenna Arrays used in 5G Mobile Phones
PublicationThis paper deals with a model-order reduction method, applied to speed-up the simulations of MIMO antenna arrays, performed by means of finite element method. The obtained results of the numerical tests show that the described technique is reliable and considerably increases the efficiency of the standard finite element method.

Does the Use of Cell Phones and Headphones at the Signalised Pedestrian Crossings Increase the Risk of Accident?
PublicationReduction of the number of fatalities among pedestrians remains a topical issue in Poland. For many years, this percentage has remained at around 30% of all those who were killed on the road. At the same time, there is an increase in the use of electronic devices by pedestrians and cyclists that may affect their perception when crossing the road. This can lead to traffic accidents. In order to investigate the problem, field studies...

Connection of microcosm with macrocosm in Max Scheler's philosophy: man, logos and ethos

Philosophy of Symbolic Forms and a Mystery of “Appearing Itself ”. Cassirer in the Context of Phenomenology
Publicationin the publications concerning Cassirer, whose number has been increasing for about a dozen years, more and more space is devoted to the genesis of his philosophy, and more attention is paid to its linkage to Neo-Kantian Marburg school. Also, in addition to Kantian, Hegelian and Goethean heritage in Cassirer’s philosophy is indicated, while its discovered philosophical foundations make it possible to regard the author of The Philosophy...

Examining Feature Vector for Phoneme Recognition / Analiza parametrów w kontekście automatycznej klasyfikacji fonemów
PublicationThe aim of this paper is to analyze usability of descriptors coming from music information retrieval to the phoneme analysis. The case study presented consists in several steps. First, a short overview of parameters utilized in speech analysis is given. Then, a set of time and frequency domain-based parameters is selected and discussed in the context of stop consonant acoustical characteristics. A toolbox created for this purpose...
