Collective angst and collective action for progressive city policies: study2

Opis

Paweł Adamowicz, the liberal mayor of Gdańsk, died on January 14, 2019, after being stabbed by a man who rushed onstage during a charity event. Three studies were carried out to analyze the predictors of willingness to engage in collective action for the support of the progressive city policies he initiated. Since we assumed that the time after the assassination of the mayor of Gdańsk could provide a specific context for the residents, we decided to conduct this study 2. It took place on the city’s election day when collective angst and city identification should have been particularly salient issues. Residents of Gdańsk (N = 121, 75 females, M age = 48.97 years, SD = 19.49) taking part in the elections were recruited outside polling stations (after the participants had already cast their votes) by research assistants and were asked to complete the questionnaires. The results of Study 2, conducted on election day in Gdańsk, confirmed the relationship between perceived collective angst and collective action intention. Politicized collective identity mediated this relationship. We measured essentialist and narrativist in-group continuity. Both aspects of continuity predicted collective action intention, whereas essentialist in-group continuity mediated the relationship between collective angst and collective action.
