Hydrological indicators of water zones in inundation, historical water levels, and forcing data for the 1881-2099 period in the lower Biebrza valley

Opis

This data set contains hydrological (1) indicators of water source extents in the Biebrza River floodplain (NE Poland) simulated using an integrated hydrological model (IHM), (2) forcing data for the IHM, and (3) water levels in the Osowiec station from the period 1881-1910.

This research was supported by grant: 2017/26/D/ST10/00665 funded by the National Science Centre, Poland.

Computations were carried out using the computers of Centre of Informatics Tricity Academic Supercomputer & Network in Poland.

Details about the methods use to derive this data-set are in a paper submitted in 2023: Berezowski, T and Partington, D:  Impact of climate change on water sources and river-floodplain mixing in the natural wetland floodplain of Biebrza River. Please cite this paper (in its final version) along with the repository when using the data.

The indicators were obtained from simulations using an IHM - HydroGeoSphere, with the Hydraulic Mixing-Cell method and they represent the number of days in a hydrological year with a given water source fraction above 75% while the water level in the inundation is greater than 1cm. This data is stored in the R software file waterZonesIndicators.rds. To read an RDS file download the R software: https://cloud.r-project.org/ and use the readRDS function (https://stat.ethz.ch/R-manual/R-devel/library/base/html/readRDS.html). The variables in the waterZonesIndicators.rds file are:
1.    forcingData – forcing data for the IHM either representative concentration pathway (historical, rcp26, rcp45, and rcp85) for future climate EURO-CORDEX forcing data, or 20CR for the Twentieth Century Reanalysis Data.
2.    node – unique id of the model node
3.    variable – indicator variables:
    a.    DaysMixingDegree – number of days with mixing degree > 0.75
    b.    DaysDepthGt1cm
    c.    MeanDepth
    d.    DaysRiver – number of days with river water fractions > 0.75
    e.    DaysGroundwater – number of days with groundwater fractions > 0.75
    f.    DaysRainfall – number of days with rain fractions > 0.75
    g.    DaysSnow – number of days with snowmelt fractions > 0.75
4.    x – x (easting) geographical coordinate
5.    y – y (northing) geographical coordinate
6.    hyear – hydrological year (XI to X)
7.    value – the value of the indicator

Geographical coordinates used in this data-set are in the PUWG 1992 system (EPSG:2180)

Bias-corrected forcing data are available in meteo_XXXX.csv files, where XXXX is the model used to simulate the forcing data – either from EURO-CORDEX initiative, or from Twentieth Century Reanalysis (20CR) data. The variables in the meteo_XXXX.csv files are:
1.    value – value of the meteorological variable (units as described below)
2.    model – name of the EURO-CORDEX model, or 20CR
3.    experiment – (only for EURO-CORDEX) either historical, or rcp26, rcp24, or rcp85
4.    variable – name of the meteorological variable:
    a.    PET – potential evapotranspiration in mm/day
    b.    rainFall – rainfall in mm/day
    c.    snowFall – snowfall in mm/day
    d.    snowMelt – snowmelt in mm/day
    e.    SWE – snow water equivalent in mm
    f.    T2m – air temperature at two meters in K
    g.    dates – date of record YYYY-mm-dd

Water levels used for validation of the IHM in the 1881-1910 period are in the hOsowiec.csv file. The data is from the Russian hydrological yearbook: Summary of water levels on the inland water ways of Russia from observations at water gauge posts. Period: 1881-1910 by Ministry of communications. internal control, water ways and roads, 1912, in Russian. The location of the station was: 53.486626N, 22.645407E (Biebrza River in Osowiec, NE Poland). Absolute water levels in m amsl were estimated based on mean water levels from a later period when the “zero” level of the gauge was known. The estimated “zero” level for the gauge in this data set for 1881-1910 period was 105.679 m amsl. The water levels are therefore not suitable for trend analysis with periods other than 1881-1910. The variables in the hOsowiec.csv files are:
1.    station – name of the station
2.    Dates – date of observation YYYY-mm-dd
3.    WaterLevelMetersAmsl – water level in meters amsl. Subtract the “zero” level 105.679, to obtain the relative value recorded on the gauge
