Ultrasonic wave propagation and digital image correlation measurements of steel bars under 3-point bending

The DataSet contains the results of the mechanical behaviour of a bar under a 3-point bending test. The bar was made of steel and had a cross-section of 5.96 × 5.96 mm2 and a length of 200 mm. The three-point bending test was performed using a Zwick/Roell Z10 universal testing machine (UTM), with a distance between supports of 12 cm. The parameters of the test were: a preload of 10 N, a constant mid-span displacement increment of 2 mm/min. The tests were stopped after 400 s and then the samples were unloaded at the same displacement rate.
During the 3-point bending test, integrated ultrasonic testing (UT) and digital image correlation (DIC) measurements were carried out. Photographs of the front surface of the bar were taken every 2 s by ARAMIS MC 2D 12M. Ultrasonic waves were induced and measured in the longitudinal direction with the use of piezoelectric transducers NAC2025. The transducers were attached to both ends of the bar (A – actuator, at the left end of the bar, B – sensor, at the right end of the bar). The excitation was a five-cycle wave packet with a central frequency of 150 kHz. Wave propagation signals were registered every 2 s with a sampling frequency of 10 MHz by a digital oscilloscope PicoScope 4824.
The experimental analysis was performed on four steel bars of the same material and geometry. The dataset consists of wave propagation signals and photographs for bars denoted as #1–#4.
The photographs (.tif) presenting the front surface of the bar were taken every 2 s. The UT files utilize a comma-separated values (.csv) format and contain wave propagation signals of a length of 5 ms, recorded every 2 s. In a single file, the time vector (in ms) and the signals from channels A (in V) and B (in V) can be found. The UTM file has (.txt) extension and contains the time of the test (2nd column), force (3rd column) and displacement of traverse (4th column).
