Implementation of daylight design strategies in urban planning - barriers to application in Poland
PublicationThis paper reflects on studies done in the area of daylight design methods with regard to principles that can be applied in architecture and urban planning strategies. The paper addresses barriers to the application of new daylight design methods in urban planning, and in particular discusses current Polish building regulations in the context of daylight design. The results of the pilot study carried out among 82 participants show...

Lighting education for architects, the barriers and challenges: a survey of architecture students
PublicationCreating a well-lit environment requires the understanding of daylight and electric lighting design principles within the built environment. Recent years have brought a large number of new lighting assessment and design methods. The discovery of new photoreceptor cells in the eye - photosensitive retinal ganglion cells - forced lighting researchers to focus on parametrisation for the image forming (IF) and non-image forming (NIF)...

An incorporation of contemporary daylight assessment methods into architecture and urban planning of residential areas in Poland
PublicationThis paper presents the preliminary results of the ongoing research focusing on daylight design methods for the urban planning of residential areas in Poland. The purpose of this research is to find out if modern daylight performance metrics and design methods can be beneficial to the process of urban residential planning. The paper presents a review of daylight guidelines derived from historic, Polish building regulations. A summary...

The Review of the Selected Challenges for an Incorporation of Daylight Assessment Methods into Urban Planning in Poland
PublicationThe main objectives of this research it to find out if modern daylight assessment and design methods can be useful for urban residential planning in Poland. The study gives a chance to describe and appraise modern daylight design techniques. The other purpose is to illustrate how daylight knowledge could be used as an incentive to rethink the way urban environments are created. Although daylight design is acknowledged in literature...

Daylight design for urban residential planning in Poland: in regulations and practice. A comparison study of daylight conditions observed in the four neighbouring residential areas
PublicationThis paper reports on the partial results of the research aiming to illustrate how an integration of daylight design into an architectural planning process can help designers to create the residential buildings in respect to the environmental issues, solar and illuminance gains, as well as, the residents’ needs and comfort. It describes how changing daylight recommendations affected the design of the block of flats regarding their...

Machine Learning Algorithm-Based Tool and Digital Framework for Substituting Daylight Simulations In Early- Stage Architectural Design Evaluation
PublicationThe aim of this paper is to examine the new method of obtaining the simulation-based results using backpropagation of errors artificial neural networks. The primary motivation to conduct the research was to determine an alternative, more efficient and less timeconsuming method which would serve to achieve the results of daylight simulations. Three daylight metrics: Daylight Factor, Daylight Autonomy and Daylight Glare Probability have...

Numerical methods for the assessment of bridge safety barriers
PublicationThe paper presents a numerical study of the bus crash test for bridge safety barriers. The analysis is conducted with the use of explicit code LS-DYNA. The problem of hourglass effect in shell elements is discussed. The simulations of bus impact against the barrier show that the analyzed barrier withstands the impact forces and restrains the bus trajectory to the bridge road.
