Discrete-continuous optimisation of an axial flow blood pump
PublikacjaThis paper presents results of discrete-continuous optimisation of an axial flow blood pump. Evolution Strategies (ES) are used as a global optimisation method in order to localise the optimal solution in relatively short time. The whole optimisation process is fully automated. This also applies to geometry modelling. Numerical simulations of the flow inside the pump is performed by means of the Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes...

Hydrogen migration observed in fragmentation of the pyridine molecules in collisions with the H+, H2+, He+and He++cations
PublikacjaThe hydrogen atom migration preceding fragmentation of the pyridine molecules by the H+, H2+, He+ and He++ collisions has been investigated in the 5-2000 eV energy range. The pyridine molecule structure is lacking of the NH group, thus formation of the NH radicals is an evidence of the H atom relocation prior to the cation-induced fragmentation. The NH(A3Π) fragmentation yields measured by detecting its A3Π→X3Σ− fluorescence show...

Total cross section for low-energy electron scattering from formic acid, (HCOOH), molecules
PublikacjaTotal cross section (TCS) for low-energy electron scattering from formic acid molecules has been measured using electrostatic electron spectrometer working in linear transmission mode. Two local maxima centered around 1.7 eV and 7.8 eV have been observed and associated with resonant scattering processes.

Cross sections calculations for electron scattering from dimethylamine, NH(CH3)2, molecule
PublikacjaThe total cross section for single electron-impact ionization and the integral elastic cross section for electron scattering from dimethylamine have been calculated using the binary-encounter-Bethe model and the independent atom method, respectively.

Fe local structure in Pt-free nitrogen-modified carbon based electrocatalysts: XAFS study
PublikacjaThe paper presents a new results on the bonding environment (coordination number and geometry) and on oxidation states of Fe in nitrogen-modified Fe/C composites used as Pt-free catalysts for oxygen reduction in Direct Hydrogen Fuel Cells. Starting from glucose or fructose, two catalysts displaying different electrochemical performance were prepared and studied in the form of pristine powder and thin catalytic layer of electrode...

Investigation of the aerodynamics of an innovative verticalaxis wind turbine
PublikacjaThis paper presents a preliminary three dimensional analysis of the transient aerodynamic phenomena occurring in the innovative modification of classic Savonius wind turbine. An attempt to explain the increased efficiency of the innovative design in comparison with the traditional solution is undertaken. Several vorticity measures such as enstrophy, absolute helicity and the integral of the velocity gradient tensor second invariant...

Applicability of an effective conductivity approach in modeling thoracic impedance changes
PublikacjaThis paper describes numerical simulations of the influence of conductivity changes inside a volume conductor on impedance changes measured on its surface. A simple model based on the finite element method has been developed to estimate an applicability of the effective conductivity theory in human chest modeling. The model consisted of a cylinder with two concentric spheres inside. Simulations were performed for two cases: first...

Experimental and comparative study on the two-phase pressure drop of air-water mixture in U-bend and straight pipe annuli
PublikacjaIn this paper, the experimental and theoretical analysis of pressure drop in singlephase and two phase-flow were presented for straight and U-bend smooth tube annulus and tube annulus with wire coil insert. Experiments for various boundary conditions were performed. In case of U-tube and straight tube with and without turbulator, tests were made for the water-water and air-water systems. The study covered a wide measuring range,...

Predicting the peak structural displacement preventing pounding of buildings during earthquakes
PublikacjaThe aim of the present paper is to verify the effectiveness of the artificial neural network (ANN) in predicting the peak lateral displacement of multi-story building during earthquakes, based on the peak ground acceleration (PGA) and building parameters. For the purpose of the study, the lumped-mass multi-degree-of-freedom structural model and different earthquake records have been considered. Firstly, values of stories mass and...

LCT, PIV and IR Imaging Detection in Selected Technical and Biomedical Applications
PublikacjaPaper presents the brief summary of the history of Thermochromic liquid crystals (TLC), Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Infrared Imaging Themography (IR). Principal methods and tools are described and some examples are presented. With this objective, a new experimental technique have been developed and applied to the study of heat and mass transfer and for biomedical diagnosis. Selected results of experiments using these methods...
