Abstrakt
Earthquakes affecting urbanized regions cause exceptional loads to load bearing structural elements such as columns. Such a boost in the load conditions can lead to severe damages which, in a worst case scenario, can lead to a total collapse of a building. This boost is caused by the horizontal ground movement generating a rise in the internal forces due to considerable large displacement between the top and bottom support of columns. Furthermore, such deformed columns can experience axial impact in the case of a soft-storey failure, where one or more storeys collapse generating an impact of the persisting structural elements. In this paper, the results of the experimental study are described conducted for models of steel columns with high slenderness ratio. In the study, the columns were subjected to a horizontal displacement between the top and bottom support and an impact load, generated by a steel sphere dropped onto a pad of technical clay, was used to simulate plastic impact.
