Fractionation and origin of dissolved and colloidal organic nitrogen in BNR plant effluent

Abstrakt

The characteristics of effluent dissolved and colloidal organic nitrogen (DON and CON) as well as their origin, fate and biodegradability in wastewater treatment plants and receiving waters were identified as the major issues that limit the ability to achieve low total N in the effluent. This study presents the results of a comprehensive survey, which was conducted in eight biological nutrient removal (BNR) WWTPs in northern Poland. The aim of the study was to identify the extent of occurrence of DON and CON in effluents and potential factors affecting the effluent DON and CON concentrations. The effluent total ON was largely made up of true DON and CON ranging from 58 to 80%. The true effluent DON passing through 0.1 um did not vary with size, biological process configuration, SRT, and influent TN concentrations in the plants studied. The variations in the effluent DON were due to variations in the CON fraction in the effluent. The dominant CON fraction in both influents and effluents was due to colloids in the pore size range of 0.1 to 0.45 um.
