  • An O ( n log n ) algorithm for finding edge span of cacti

Let G=(V,E) be a nonempty graph and xi be a function. In the paper we study the computational complexity of the problem of finding vertex colorings c of G such that: (1) |c(u)-c(v)|>=xi(uv) for each edge uv of E; (2) the edge span of c, i.e. max{|c(u)-c(v)|: uv belongs to E}, is minimal. We show that the problem is NP-hard for subcubic outerplanar graphs of a very simple structure (similar to cycles) and polynomially solvable for...

  • Applications of semi-definite optimization in quantum information protocols
    Publication

    - Year 2016

This work is concerned with the issue of applications of the semi-definite programming (SDP) in the field of quantum information sci- ence. Our results of the analysis of certain quantum information protocols using this optimization technique are presented, and an implementation of a relevant numerical tool is introduced. The key method used is NPA discovered by Navascues et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 010401 (2007)]. In chapter...

  • An upper bound for the double outer-independent domination number of a tree
    Publication

A vertex of a graph is said to dominate itself and all of its neighbors. A double outer-independent dominating set of a graph G is a set D of vertices of G such that every vertex of G is dominated by at least two vertices of D, and the set V(G)\D is independent. The double outer-independent domination number of a graph G, denoted by γ_d^{oi}(G), is the minimum cardinality of a double outer-independent dominating set of G. We prove...

  • Analyzing sets of phylogenetic trees obtained from bayesian MCMC process using topology metrics
    Publication

    - Year 2009

The reconstruction of evolutionary trees is one of the primary objectives in phylogenetics. Such a tree represents historical evolutionary relationship between different species or organisms. Tree comparisons are used for multiple purposes, from unveiling the history of species to deciphering evolutionary associations amongorganisms and geographical areas. In the paper, we describe a general method for comparing hylogenetic trees....

  • Approximating the maximum 2- and 3-edge-colorable subgraph problems
    Publication

Dla ustalonej wartości parametru k>=2, problem maksymalnego podgrafu krawędziowo k-kolorowalnego polega na wskazaniu k rozłącznych skojarzeń w grafie prostym, a kryterium optymalizacji jest maksymalizacja całkowitej liczby użytych krawędzi. W pracy podano algorytmy 5/6- i 4/5-przybliżone odpowiednio dla przypadków k=2 i k=3, poprawiając wyniki znane z literatury.

  • Application of an online judge & contester system in academic tuition
    Publication

Praca zawiera opis systemu typu ''Online judge & contester'' o nazwie SPOJ, wykorzystywanego do zdalnej nauki programowania. Został on pomyślnie wdrożony w nauczaniu informatyki na Politechnice Gdańskiej. Omówiono zasadę działania i mechanizmy bezpieczeństwa systemu SPOJ. Przedstawiono wnioski z doświadczeń przy stosowaniu tego typu systemów w nauczaniu na etapie studiów 1. i 2. stopnia w ciągu ostatnich czterech lat.

  • Application of Doubly Connected Dominating Sets to Safe Rectangular Smart Grids
    Publication

    - ENERGIES - Year 2022

Smart grids, together with the Internet of Things, are considered to be the future of the electric energy world. This is possible through a two-way communication between nodes of the grids and computer processing. It is necessary that the communication is easy and safe, and the distance between a point of demand and supply is short, to reduce the electricity loss. All these requirements should be met at the lowest possible cost....

  • Approximation algorithms for job scheduling with block-type conflict graphs
    Publication

    - COMPUTERS & OPERATIONS RESEARCH - Year 2024

The problem of scheduling jobs on parallel machines (identical, uniform, or unrelated), under incompatibility relation modeled as a block graph, under the makespan optimality criterion, is considered in this paper. No two jobs that are in the relation (equivalently in the same block) may be scheduled on the same machine in this model. The presented model stems from a well-established line of research combining scheduling theory...
