Abstrakt
There are two main approaches to processing tasks requiring high amounts of computational power. One approach is using clusters of mostly identical hardware, placed in dedicated locations. The other approach is outsourcing computing resources from large numbers of volunteers connected to the Internet. This chapter attempts to formulate a mathematical model of the volunteer based approach to distributed computations and apply it to basic operations defined in a model of distributed applications.
