Abstrakt
Long distances from one farm to another as well as unfavourable terrain configuration in rural areas in Poland result in high investment and operation costs of sewerage systems. Treatment wetlands (TWs) can be an alternative solution to sewage treatment in rural communities, schools, at campsites and for single houses. In this paper the results of 4 years monitoring of single-family treatment plants (SFTWs) in Kaszuby Lake District are presented. Based on experience with the TWs in Poland and in Europe, three configurations of TWs were proposed: two with vertical flow beds and the third one with a horizontal flow bed preceded by a pre-filter. In the first 2 years of operation, good treatment effectiveness was observed: BOD5 64.0–92.0 %, TN 44.0–77.0 %, TP 24.0–66.0 %. After 3 years of operation, the removal efficiency of organic matter and TN increased by 12– 20 %. Comparison of three configurations of SFTWs indicated that facilities with VSSF beds were more effective in pollutants removal. Configuration I, consisting of a single VSSF bed with a larger unit area, provided more effective nitrification, while configuration II, with two sequential VSSF beds, ensured better organic matter removal. The final pollutants concentrations in effluent from these two configurations were quite similar and fulfilled the requirements of the Regulation of Environmental Ministry from 24 July 2006.
