Technical and economic conditions of supplying residential consumers with heat from nuclear power plant

Abstrakt

The reduction of CO2 emission requires technological shift towards carbon-free options. Cogeneration of electricity and heat based on coal and natural gas will experience generation cost increase, if the costs of emissions are imposed on the plant operators. Therefore, nuclear and renewable options should be considered. In this paper, we present the concept of electricity and heat supply system with nuclear condensing turbine adapted to extract vapour to district heating network feedwater heaters. Parallel connection of nuclear plant with coal-fueled heating plants available in district heating network of Gdynia (Poland) was proposed. Peak heat load was 250 MW. Therefore, only small modifications of turbine system were proposed. Subsequently, turbine system model for nuclear unit with EPR reactor was developed and thermodynamic state properties of secondary cycle were determined for variable heat load. On this basis, electrical power output of nuclear cogeneration plant for each heat load value was calculated. As a result, annual electricity and heat production from nuclear cogeneration was obtained. Annual costs of nuclear power plant adapted to operate in cogeneration mode were compared with the costs of equivalent coal-fueled technologies to evaluate profitability of the system. The analysis revealed that the costs of nuclear heat and power generation and transmission is the least compared to coal-fueled technologies, equivalent in terms of annual electricity and heat production.
