Sport-related concussion alters cerebral hemodynamic activity during controlled respiration
PublicationThis study investigated cerebral hemodynamic activity following sport-related concussion. Prefrontal cortex oxygenation was assessed by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during a controlled breathing protocol. Wavelet transformation of the NIRS signals showed significant decreases in HbO2 and HbD amplitude at the respiratory frequency interval (0.10–0.6 HZ) from preseason baseline to acute concussion. These results suggest a decreased...

Association of Genes Related to Oxidative Stress with the Extent of Coronary Atherosclerosis
PublicationOxidative stress is believed to play a critical role in atherosclerosis initiation and progression. In line with this, in a group of 1099 subjects, we determined eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) related to oxidative stress (PON1 c.575A>G, MPO c.463G>A, SOD2 c.47T>C, GCLM c.590C>T, NOS3 c.894G>T, NOS3 c.786T>C, CYBA c.214C>T, and CYBA c.932A>G) and assessed the extent of atherosclerosis in coronary arteries based on...

Assessing Effectiveness of Recommendations to Requirements-Related Problems through Interviews with Experts
PublicationRequirements Engineering and Business Analysis are known as very important to software project outcome but also difficult activities, coping with many problems and challenges. The work reported in this paper was preceded by a survey which revealed most common requirements-related problems in Polish IT industry. We addressed ten most frequently reported problems by reviewing the literature for recommen¬dations how to cope with...

Nitrification, denitrification, and dephosphatation capability of activated sludge during co-treatment of intermediate-age landfill leachates with municipal wastewater
PublicationThis study focuses on the possible use and efficacy of the co-treatment of landfill leachate (intermediate-age) with municipal wastewater. The nitrification, denitrification, and dephosphatation capability of activated sludge acclimated with a mixture of raw municipal wastewater (RWW) with gradually increasing amounts of raw landfill leachate (RLL) (from 0.5 to 5% v/v) were tested. Biochemical tests were conducted simultaneously...

Water related esthetics - the phenomenon of new structure in the post industrial shipyard areas
PublicationDirection of the main movements that are made in the European cities determines not only structural but also an esthetic changes. Paper follows the topic of visual diversity of post industrial waterfront cities and it’s relation to the local identity and cultural changes that are provided. Reshaping of the cities continuously proceed. Are those changes related with industrial shipyard districts only economical and spatial or also...

Raman spectroscopic investigation of blood and related materials
PublicationThis paper reports preliminary studies on use of Raman spectroscopy for investigation of blood. High quality blood spectra were recorded in-vitro with excitation wavelengths of 830 nm. Because of complex composition of the blood as well as by light attenuation and scattering in the tissues, spectra set up from wide, low-intensive Raman bands and intensive optical background. To get information about origin of bands in Raman spectra...

What Is Troubling IT Analysts? A Survey Report from Poland on Requirements-Related Problems
PublicationRequirements engineering and business analysis are activities considered to be important to software project success but also difficult and challenging. This paper reports on a survey conducted in Polish IT industry, aimed at identifying most widespread problems/challenges related to requirements. The survey was targeted at people performing role of analyst in commercial IT projects. The questionnaire included 64 pre-defined problems...

Platform governance for sustainable development: Reshaping citizen-administration relationships in the digital age
PublicationChanging governance paradigms has been shaping and reshaping the landscape of citizen-administration relationships, from impartial application of rules and regulations by administration to exercise its authority over citizens (bureaucratic paradigm), through provision of public services by administration to fulfil the needs of citizens (consumerist paradigm), to responsibility-sharing between administration and citizens for policy...

Polish Adaptation of the Pregnancy-Related Anxiety Questionnaire—Revised 2 for All Pregnant Women
PublicationPregnancy-related anxiety (PrA) is a specific type of anxiety characteristic of the perinatal period. PrA can affect pregnancy and birth. However, no validated tool exists to measure PrA in Polish obstetric practice. The aim of this study was to translate the Pregnancy-Related Anxiety Questionnaire—Revised 2 (PRAQ-R2) into Polish and to evaluate its reliability and factorial and construct validity. This study was conducted in Poland...

Numbers, Please: Power- and Voltage-Related Indices in Control of a Turbine-Generator Set
PublicationThis paper discusses the proper selection and interpretation of aggregated control performance indices values mirroring the quality of electrical energy generation by a turbine-generator set cooperating with a power system. Typically, a set of basic/classical and individual indices is used in energy engineering to ensure the mirroring feature and is related to voltage, frequency and active or reactive power deviations from their...

PHYSICAL MODEL OF ENERGY-RELATED PROCESSES IN A ROTATING MECHANICAL SYSTEM FOR THE PURPOSES OF DIAGNOSIS OF TRANSMISSION SHAFTS
PublicationIn the present article, selected problems connected with identification of slowly changing energy-related processes accompanying high cyclic fatigue of construction materials of simple mechanical systems, with special consideration of transmission shafts, are mentioned for diagnostic purposes. The article also presents physical models of object and processes that in a simplified way reflect mechanical energy transmission from transmission...

Pressure drop related to flow maldistribution in a model minichannel plate heat exchanger
PublicationThe paper describes the issues related to the pressure drop that accompanies the phenomenon of maldistribution of working fluid between the channels of a model minichannel plate heat exchanger. The research concerns a single exchanger's plate containing 51 (in every geometry) parallel rectangular minichannels of hydraulic diameters 461 µm, 571 µm, 750 µm and 823 µm. In addition, the more complex geometry has been investigated,...

Source-related Wavefields in Fluids and Dielectrics: A new way of Thinking about Medium Dynamics
PublicationAcoustic and electromagnetic wave phenomena may seem to have a proper formal representation in field theory dating from the 19th century, founded on the mathematics of complex functions. This paper shows, however, that when replacing the classical spectrum-domain approach related to the assumption of harmonic timeform of signals, with a time-domain approach imposingnorestrictionastotheclassoftimeevolutionofsourceandfieldsignals,...

PCR-RFLP assays for species-specific identification of fungi belonging to Scopulariopsis and related genera
PublicationFungi of the Scopulariopsis genus, commonly found in the environment, are opportunistic pathogens that can cause various types of human infections. So far, no efficient molecular method has been developed for species differentiation among Scopulariopsis and related genera. In order to advance this field, we have evaluated performance of polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assays, based...
