Behavioral state classification in epileptic brain using intracranial electrophysiology
PublicationOBJECTIVE: Automated behavioral state classification can benefit next generation implantable epilepsy devices. In this study we explored the feasibility of automated awake (AW) and slow wave sleep (SWS) classification using wide bandwidth intracranial EEG (iEEG) in patients undergoing evaluation for epilepsy surgery. APPROACH: Data from seven patients (age [Formula: see text], 4 women) who underwent intracranial depth electrode...

Impact assessment culture in the European Union. Time for something new?
PublicationCurrent approaches and cultures for the economic evaluations of environmental and health policies may suffer from excessive reliance on a standard neoclassic economic toolbox that neglects alternative perspectives. This may prematurely limit the spectrum of available policy options. Here we show how the inclusion of neglected currents of thought such as non-Ricardian economics, bioeconomics and a set of qualitative-quantitative...

Elemental and water-insoluble organic carbon in Svalbard snow: a synthesis of observations during 2007–2018
PublicationLight-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols emitted by biomass or fossil fuel combustion can contribute to amplifying Arctic climate warming by lowering the albedo of snow. The Svalbard archipelago, being near to Europe and Russia, is particularly affected by these pollutants, and improved knowledge of their distribution in snow is needed to assess their impact. Here we present and synthesize new data obtained on Svalbard between 2007...

Multifrequency Wideband Sonar Array
PublicationThis paper describes of new approach to Multifrequency Wideband Arrays (MWA),applied piezocomposite technologies of the array elements. MWA operating in transmitting(Tx) and receiving (Rx) mode on two or three bands, requires state-of-the-art technology andefficient array designing than conventional array in which separate arrays for every band oreven separate Tx and Rx transducers/arrays are used. The new piezocomposite elements...

Desirability-based optimization of dual-fuel diesel engine using acetylene as an alternative fuel
Publicationhe study examined the dual-fuel engine performance employing acetylene gas as primary fuel and diesel as pilot fuel. The engine's operational parameters were adjusted using the Box-Behnken design, and the results were recorded. The best operating settings were yielded as 81.25 % engine load, 4.48 lpm acetylene gas flow rate and the compression ratio were 18. At this optimized setting the BTE was 27.1 % and the engine emitted 360...

Performance and emission characteristics of diesel engines running on gaseous fuels in dual-fuel mode
PublicationConventional fossil fuels are being substituted with alternative green fuels because of their greenhouse gas emissions and pollution problems, which pose a severe threat to the environment. Several studies have reported the usage of biodiesel and gaseous fuels in both single and dual-fuel modes. Gaseous fuels such as producer gas, biogas, syngas, and hydrogen produced from renewable biomass could potentially be used along with...

Recent advances in hydrogen production from biomass waste with a focus on pyrolysis and gasification
PublicationThis paper presents the results research on the optimal fuel compositions and the control parameters of the spark ignition engine fueled with syngas-biogas-hydrogen for the purpose of setting up a flexible electronic control unit for the engine working in a solar-biomass hybrid renewable energy system. In syngas-biogas-hydrogen mixture, the optimal content of hydrogen and biogas is 20% and 30%, respectively. Exceeding these thresholds,...

Student Perspectives on the 2017 ESA Concurrent Engineering Challenge
PublicationIn September 2017, the first ESA Academy’s Concurrent Engineering Challenge (CEC) was held, giving 88 Master’s and PhD-level students from twelve ESA Member and Associate States a powerful platform to experience system engineering in an intense, fast paced, and real-world environment. Within four days, teams of physics and engineering students in Concurrent Design Facilities (CDF) located in Politecnico di Torino, Universidad Polit´ecnica...

YADE - An extensible framework for the interactive simulation of multiscale, multiphase, and multiphysics particulate systems
PublicationThis contribution presents the key elements of YADE, an extensible open-source framework for dynamic simulations. During the past 19 years, YADE has evolved from "Yet Another Dynamic Engine"' to a versatile multiscale and multiphysics solver, counting a large, active, and growing community of users and developers. The computationally intense parts of the source code are written in C++, using flexible object models that allow for...

Antifungal Activity and Synergism with Azoles of Polish Propolis
PublicationThe aim of our work was to check if one of the products of natural origin, namely honey 19 bee propolis may be an alternative or supplement to currently used antifungal agents. The activity 20 of 50 ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEPs), harvested in Polish apiaries, was tested on a group of 69 21 clinical isolates of C. albicans. Most of the EEPs showed satisfactory activity, with minimum 22 fungicidal concentrations (MFC) mainly...

Improving the accuracy of bearing in active sonar with cylindrical array using spectrum estimation.
PublicationThe articles presents a method for improving the accuracy of bearing in multibeam sonar with a cylindrical array. Based on a known spatial spectrum estimation technique, the method has been successfully used in linear array systems. Its accuracy of bearing is satisfactory and ensures a relatively low computational effort. The article discusses certain simplifications and assumptions to adapt the spatial spectrum estimation technique...

Results from a Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) in Mastocytosis Reveal New Gene Polymorphisms Associated with WHO Subgroups
PublicationMastocytosis is rare disease in which genetic predisposition is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to analyze associations between mastocytosis and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) by a genome-wide association study (GWAS) approach. A total of 234 patients were enrolled in our study, including 141 with cutaneous mastocytosis (CM; 78 children and 63 adults) and 93 with systemic mastocytosis (SM, all adults)....
