Interlaboratory Test to Characterize the Cyclic Behavior of Bituminous Interlayers: An Overview of Testing Equipment and Protocols
PublicationThe performance assessment of multi-layered pavements strongly depends on the mechanical behavior of the interface between bituminous layers. So far, comprehensive studies have been carried out mainly using quasi-static laboratory tests focusing on the interlayer shear strength at failure. However, it is generally recognized that cyclic shear testing will lead to the determination of parameters which are more closely linked to...

An influence of the ship's block coefficient implementation on the evaluation of it's hull girder bending
PublicationAn influence of the three different ways of implementation ship's block coefficient δ (three geometrical models) on the stresses due to wave bending moment have been investigated. Two models have been applied and compared: beam one (description of the shape usingparameters) and FEM shell model (direct representation of the shape). The outcomes have been compared to Polish Register of Shipping (PRS) rules. The results show that...

Laser Welding of UNS S33207 Hyper-Duplex Stainless Steel to 6061 Aluminum Alloy Using High Entropy Alloy as a Filler Material
PublicationThe high entropy alloy (HEA) filler used during the fabrication method determines the reliability of HEAs for steel-aluminum dissimilar alloy configuration. HEAs have a direct impact on the formation of intermetallic compounds (IMC) formed by the interaction of iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al), and influence the size of the joint’s interaction zone. A novel welding process for Fe-Al alloy joints was developed to prevent the development...

Comparative 3D DEM simulations of sand–structure interfaces with similarly shaped clumps versus spheres with contact moments.
PublicationThree-dimensional simulations of a monotonic quasi-static interface behaviour between initially dense cohesionless sand and a rigid wall of different roughness during tests in a parallelly guided direct shear test under constant normal stress are presented. Numerical modelling was carried out by the discrete element method (DEM) using clumps in the form of convex non-symmetric irregularly shaped grains. The clumps had an aspect...

Nano soil improvement technique using cement
PublicationNano soil-improvement is an innovative idea in geotechnical engineering. Nanomaterials are among the newest additives that improve soil properties. Herein, laboratory tests, such as unconfined compressive strength, direct shear test, and initial tests, were conducted to investigate the geotechnical properties of Kelachay clay with micro- and nanosized cement to evaluate its particles in untreated soil and observe changes in the...

A Generalized Framework Towards Structural Mechanics of Three-layered Composite Structures
PublicationThree-layered composite structures find a broad application. Increasingly, composites are being used whose layer thicknesses and material properties diverge strongly. In the perspective of structural mechanics, classical approaches to analysis fail at such extraordinary composites. Therefore, emphasis of the present approach is on arbitrary transverse shear rigidities and structural thicknesses of the individual layers. Therewith...

Shear Cap Size Selection Method Based on Parametric Analysis of ACI-318 Code and Eurocode 2 Standard
PublicationThe scope of the paper is to propose a method for determining the size of shear caps in a slab–column-connections-reinforced concrete structure. Usually, shear heads are used to enhance slab–column connection, especially when the transverse reinforcement does not give the required punching shear load capacity. The dimensions of the shear head should provide the punching shear resistance of the connection inside and outside the...

Load introduction to composite columns revisited—Significance of force allocation and shear connection stiffness
PublicationThe AISC 360-16 Specification recommends that the design shear force between parts of a composite column in the load introduction area shall be calculated based on the force allocation at ultimate limit state. Applicability of this straightforward method to the load levels that usually arise in slender composite columns is questionable, as this capacity-based force allocation is only true when the axial force is equal to the plastic...

Identification of Shear Modulus Parameters of Half-space Inhomogeneous by Depth
PublicationThe paper propose a method for determining of the parameters of the exponential shear modulus of a functionally graded half-space based on the solution of the problem of a pure shear of an elastic functionally graded half-space by a strip punch. The solution of the integral equation of the contact problem is constructed by asymptotic methods with respect to the dimensionless parameter. The dependence of contact stresses on the...

Influence of the Shear Cap Size and Stiffness on the Distribution of Shear Forces in Flat Slabs
PublicationThe scope of this paper is to investigate analytically and numerically the influence of shear cap size and stiffness on the distribution of shear forces in flat slabs in a slab–column-connections-reinforced concrete structure. The effect of support (shear cap) stiffness on the calculation of the length of the shear control perimeter according to the available methods is presented. Based on the analysis, the authors indicate in...

Verification of Selected Calculation Methods Regarding Shear Strength in Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Beams
PublicationThe purpose of this article was an attempt to compare selected calculation methods regarding shear strength in reinforced and prestressed concrete beams. Several calculation methods were tested. This included codes: PN-EN 1992-1-1:2008 [1], ACI 318- 14 [2] and fib Model Code for Concrete Structures 2010 [3]. The analysis also consists of methods published in technical literature. Calculations of shear strengths were made based...

The Influence of Shear Deformation in analysis of plane frames
PublicationThe focus of the paper is to investigate the influence of shear deformation effect on the distribution of internal forces and frame deformation. To estimate shear deformation effect, the Timoshenko beam theory and the concept of shear deformation coefficients are used. Analysis of example frames gives the possibility to evaluate what have the most impact on size of shear deformation and in which type of frames the shear deformation...

Characterization of the Functionally Graded Shear Modulus of a Half-Space
PublicationIn this article, a method is proposed for determining parameters of the exponentialy varying shear modulus of a functionally graded half-space. The method is based on the analytical solution of the problem of pure shear of an elastic functionally graded half-space by a strip punch. The half-space has the depth-wise exponential variation of its shear modulus, whose parameters are to be determined. The problem is reduced to an integral...

Possible effects of the 1984 St. Clair River ice jam on bed changes
PublicationThis study examines the possible effect of the record ice jam of 1984 in the St. Clair River on river bed changes and conveyance. Numerical simulations were made to examine the flow and bed shear stresses during the jam formation and release periods. Simulation results indicate that the ice jam in the river did not cause a significant increase in bed shear stress compared to pre- and post-jam open water conditions. The insignificant...

PublicationThe datasets entitled Determination of changes in viscosity of hydrogel depending on shear rate contain the results of viscosity measurements using a Brookfield viscometer, with different kinds of spindles and shear rates. The data allowed the used hydrogel preparations to be characterised and their functional parameters, as substances modifying the rheology of thickeners and determining the effect of shear rate on the viscosity...

Acoustic Heating Produced in the Thermoviscous Flow of a Shear-Thinning Fluid
PublicationThis study is devoted to the instantaneous acoustic heating of a shear-thinningfluid. Apparent viscosity of a shear-thinning fluid depends on the shear rate. Thatfeature distinguishes it from a viscous Newtonian fluid. The special linear combi-nation of conservation equations in the differential form makes it possible to derivedynamic equations governing both the sound and non-wave entropy mode inducedin the field of sound. These...
