Building Information Modeling in Small and Middle Sized Buildings – Case Study
PublicationBuilding Information Modeling (BIM) is a technology designed to improve and integrate all engineering aspects in the construction design process. Tools that incorporate the idea of BIM are becoming more advanced and also more popular. Available software solutions have already reached an assumable high level of development, but still are not as widespread and used on nearly as many construction projects as could be expected. Therefore...

Influence of sheet/purlin fasteners spacing on shear flexibility of the diaphragm
PublicationThe paper presents the influence of sheet/purlin fasteners location (in reference to trapezoidal profile cross section) on shear flexibility of the cladding acting as a diaphragm. Analytical procedures were presented and their limitations were discussed. Next, selected schemes of fasteners location, known from engineering practice, but not included in European codes and recommendations, were analysed numerically in order to observe...

Investigation of behaviour of metal structures with polymer dampers under dynamic loads
PublicationA large number of accidents concerning structures subjected to dynamic loads have been recently observed. One of the examples of such a structure is a temporary steel grandstand erected using scaffolding system. Dynamic load that is generated by crowd movement has a significant influence on the behaviour of the structure and may lead to excessive structural vibrations. The aim of the study is to consider the idea of using polymer...

Earthquake-Induced Pounding Between Asymmetric Steel Buildings
PublicationEarthquake-induced pounding between buildings has been the subject of numerous numerical and experimental studies in the resent years. The phenomenon may cause severe damage to structural elements as well as may also lead to the total collapse of colliding structures. A major reason leading to pounding between adjacent, insufficiently separated buildings results from the differences in their dynamic properties. The aim of this...

Investigation on Damage-Involved Structural Response of Colliding Steel Structures during Ground Motions
PublicationEarthquakes are the most unpredictable damaging loads which can affect civil engineering structures. Due to insufficient separation distance between adjacent structures with different dynamic properties, structural collisions may occur during ground motions. Although the research on structural pounding has recently been much advanced, the studies have mainly been conducted for concrete structures. The aim of this paper is to show...

THE COST ANALYSIS OF CORROSION PROTECTION SOLUTIONS FOR STEEL COMPONENTS IN TERMS OF THE OBJECT LIFE CYCLE COST
PublicationSteel materials, due to their numerous advantages - high availability, easiness of processing and possibility of almost any shaping are commonly applied in construction for carrying out basic carrier systems and auxiliary structures. However, the major disadvantage of this material is its high corrosion susceptibility, which depends strictly on the local conditions of the facility and the applied type of corrosion protection system....

Effective Gap Size Index for Determination of Optimum Separation Distance Preventing Pounding between Buildings during Earthquakes
PublicationSeismic excitations may lead to collisions between adjacent civil engineering structures causing major damage. In this paper, an effective equation for calculating the gap size index is proposed so as to provide the optimum separation distance preventing structural pounding during different earthquakes. Evaluation of the best prediction of the required separation distance between two adjacent buildings was carried out by using...

The Effectiveness of Polymer Damper in Damage Reduction of Temporary Steel Grandstand
PublicationA large number of accidents involving damage of temporary grandstands during different types of events were observed in the past. The aim of the paper is to analyse numerically the effectiveness of a polymer damper in damage reduction of a temporary steel scaffolding grandstand exposed to dynamic load due to jumping. The element has been installed as a diagonal one at the back part of the structure. The method has been compared...

MODAL ANALYSIS OF REAL TIMBER FRAME HOUSES WITH DIFFERENT INSULATION MATERIALS
PublicationThe aim of this article is to present the results of a numerical modal analysis of two actual structures of timber frame buildings and the different behaviour due to the used insulation material. One model of the timber structure was filled with mineral wool, while the other with polyurethane foam. During the modal analysis, eigenvalues for both models have been determined. The results of the analysis clearly show the increase...

Numerical Evaluation of Dynamic Response of a Steel Structure Model under Various Seismic Excitations
PublicationThe present paper reports the results of the study, which was designed to perform a numerical evaluation of dynamic response of a single-storey steel structure model. The experimental model was previously subjected to a number of different earthquake ground motions during an extensive shaking table investigation. The analyzed structure model was considered as a 1-DOF system with lumped parameters, which were determined by conducting...

Impact of Geometrical Imperfections on Estimation of Buckling and Limit Loads in a Silo Segment Using the Vibration Correlation Technique
PublicationThe paper examines effectiveness of the vibration correlation technique which allows determining the buckling or limit loads by means of measured natural frequencies of structures. A steel silo segment with a corrugated wall, stiffened with cold-formed channel section columns was analysed. The investigations included numerical analyses of: linear buckling, dynamic eigenvalue and geometrically static non-linear problems. Both perfect...

Experimental and numerical analysis of an aluminum cantilevered beam with polymer adhesive
PublicationIn this paper, experimental and numerical investigation on a composite cantilevered aluminum beam has been conducted. The subject of the study consists of two plain aluminum elements bonded with polymer adhesive of different thickness. It has been proven in the previous study that this kind of material has high damping properties. During an experimental investigation, value of damping ratios have been obtained. The aim of a numerical...

Non-Linear Analysis of Inter-Story Pounding between Wood-Framed Buildings during Ground Motion
PublicationPounding between adjacent buildings during ground motion may result in structural damage or lead to total destruction of structures. The research on the phenomenon has recently been much advanced; however, the analyses have been carried out only for concrete, steel, and masonry structures, while pounding between wooden buildings has not been studied so far. The aim of this paper is to show the results of detailed non-linear seismic...

Increasing the Seismic Resistance of Wood-frame Buildings by Applying PU Foam as Thermal Insulation
PublicationWood-frame buildings are very common in regions that are exposed to earthquakes. Most of residential buildings are constructed using this technology; therefore, the seismic resistance of them is really essential in order to prevent human losses and structural damage. The aim of the present article is to show the results of the detailed numerical FEM analysis focused on the seismic behaviour of the wood-frame house with different...

Determination of buckling strength of silos composed of corrugated walls and thin-walled-columns using simplified wall segment models
PublicationW artykule przedstawiono wyniki obszernych analiz numerycznych wyboczenia i stateczności metalowych silosów z blachy falistej wzmocnionych cienkościennymi słupami. Wykonano analizy liniowe i nieliniowe. Do obliczeń zaproponowano proste modele segmentów ścian zamiast skomplikowanych modeli całych silosów. Otrzymano bardzo dobrą zgodność wyników numerycznych. Wyniki obliczeń numerycznych porównano dodatkowo z wynikami normowymi.

PublicationA large number of accidents, involving collapses of temporary grandstands during different types of events, were observed in the past. If the synchronized movement of people is tuned with the natural frequency of the affected part of the structure, resonance might occur. It may lead to severe damages of grandstands, their collapse or panic among the spectators. The aim of the paper is to assess, through preliminary experimental...

A major reason leading to interactions in buildings results from the differences in their dynamic parameters and also from insufficient distance between the structures. Although the research on structural pounding has been much advanced, the studies have mainly been...
