Energy Clusters in Reconciling Paradoxes in Corporate Sustainability

Abstrakt

Our study aims to discover whether there is awareness and acknowledgment of paradoxical tensions in the sustainability pillars in clusters operating in the energy sector, as well as whether and how these clusters help their member companies reconcile these paradoxes. Our study also intends to discover the role of clusters in supporting sustainable value chain creation to solve paradoxical tensions. We use a multiple case study method and present results from three renewables-oriented energy clusters in two Central and East European (CEE) countries, i.e., Hungary, Romania, and one Western European (WE) country, Germany. We identified central and correlative paradoxical tensions and fundamental practices to mitigate them in the clusters studied. We show that bridging various partner clusters’ goals and economic interests enables building a sustainable value chain that addresses paradoxical tensions. Our research extends the clustering and sustainability literature since the role of energy clusters in reconciling corporate sustainability paradoxes through creating a sustainable value chain has yet to be studied. Moreover, the study contrasts the findings from CEE and WE. We demonstrate that bridging the goals and economic interests of various partner clusters enables building a sustainable value chain that addresses paradoxical tensions in an intra-organizational setting regardless of the regional context.
