Abstrakt
The global push for an energy transition towards renewable sources has placed energy-based industrial clusters (EBICs) at the forefront of this transformation. Chapter twelve introduces into the complex interplay between energy transition and the paradoxes that arise from it, particularly in the context of environmental sustainability and economic development. The industrial hubs of EBICs are to associate coastal resources and energy production, serve as crucial examples of symbiotic arrangements aimed at promoting common objectives, such as the adoption of renewable energy and the reduction of carbon emissions. However, these initiatives often bring to light paradoxical tensions. While the shift to renewable energy sources is critical for long-term environmental sustainability, it can also trigger economic challenges, including downturns in traditional energy sectors and subsequent unemployment. The Pomeranian region of Poland provides a compelling case study for exploring these paradoxes. Here, EBICs exemplify both the potential and the pitfalls of an energy transition. By analysing the experiences in this region, the chapter collate these findings with those from other European countries, highlighting the broader relevance and occurrence of such paradoxes. In exploring these tensions, the chapter not only uncovers the intricate balance between environmental goals and economic stability but also identifies practical solutions for addressing these conflicts. Ultimately, this chapter aims to shed light on how EBICs can navigate these paradoxes to foster a more sustainable and economically viable energy future.
