A scale with ECG measurements capability for home cardiac monitoring
PublikacjaPresented device -a scale developed for enabling extra measurements, in addition to body weight and composition, the electrical activity of the heart (electrocardiogram - ECG) and the level of oxygen saturation in the blood SaO2. Electrical activity is recorded in the form of six leads, socalled - limb leads. The device allows measurement of all standard limb leads and without the need for additional procedures. ECG, although the...

Long Distance Vital Signs Monitoring with Person Identification for Smart Home Solutions
PublikacjaAbstract— Imaging photoplethysmography has already been proved to be successful in short distance (below 1m). However, most of the real-life use cases of measuring vital signs require the system to work at longer distances, to be both more reliable and convenient for the user. The possible scenarios that system designers must have in mind include monitoring of the vital signs of residents in nursing homes, disabled people, who...

Non-Contact Monitoring of ECG in the Home Environment—Selecting Optimal Electrode Configuration
PublikacjaCapacitive electrocardiography (cECG) is most often used in wearable or embedded measurement systems. The latter is considered in the paper. An optimal electrocardiographic lead, as an individual feature, was determined based on model studies. It was defined as the possibly highest value of the R-wave amplitude measured on the back of the examined person. The lead configuration was also analyzed in terms of minimizing its susceptibility...

Measuring pulse rate with a webcam — A non-contact method for evaluating cardiac activity
PublikacjaIn this paper the simple and robust method of measuring the pulse rate is presented. Elaborated algorithm allows for efficient pulse rate registration directly from face image captured from webcam. The desired signal was obtained by proper channel selection and principal component analysis. A developed non-contact method of heart rate monitoring is shown in the paper. The proposed technique may have a great value in monitoring...

Enhanced Remote Control Providing Medical Functionalities
PublikacjaThis paper presents the enhanced remote control and its role in pervasive healthcare in the home. The device was equipped with health-related measurement modules and a message-processing unit. Preliminary results are presented for monitoring of a pulse, hand tremors, grip forces, and for self evaluation procedures. The interaction of the device with the smart environment is presented and discussed.

Design of a Distributed System using Mobile Devices and Workflow Management for Measurement and Control of a Smart Home and Health
PublikacjaThe paper presents design of a distributed system for measurements and control of a smart home including temper- atures, light, fire danger, health problems of inhabitants such as increased body temperature, a person falling etc. This is done by integration of mobile devices and standards, distributed service based middleware BeesyCluster and a workflow management system. Mobile devices are used to measure the parameters and are...

A telemedical and an outpatient thoracic impedance measurements - a validation algorithm of the electrodes placement
PublikacjaThis paper presents the algorithm for validation of electrodes locations for the thoracic impedance measurements. In particular the presented algorithm was designed to perform the telemetric sleep apnea monitoring. One of the problems, during the clinical tests of a developed device, was to preserve the repeatability of measurements. It strongly depended on the appropriate electrodes placement on the examined person’s thorax. It...

Measuring Pulse Rate with a Webcam
PublikacjaIn this paper a simple method of measuring the pulse rate is presented. Elaborated algorithm allows for efficient pulse rate registration directly from face images captured from a webcam. The desired signal is obtained by proper channel selection and principal component analysis. To determine the accuracy of the method an ECG signal is collected together with a video recordings. The effectiveness of the algorithm is considered...

Feature extraction in detection and recognition of graphical objects
PublikacjaDetection and recognition of graphic objects in images are of great and growing importance in many areas, such as medical and industrial diagnostics, control systems in automation and robotics, or various types of security systems, including biometric security systems related to the recognition of the face or iris of the eye. In addition, there are all systems that facilitate the personal life of the blind people, visually impaired...

The motion influence on respiration rate estimation from low-resolution thermal sequences during attention focusing tasks
PublikacjaGlobal aging has led to a growing expectancy for creating home-based platforms for indoor monitoring of elderly people. A motivation is to provide a non-intrusive technique, which does not require special activities of a patient but allows for remote monitoring of elderly people while assisting them with their daily activities. The goal of our study was to evaluate motion performed by a person focused on a specific task and check...

Smart Weighing Scale with Feet-Sampled ECG
PublikacjaIn a smart home, health and well-being monitoring systems could be embedded in everyday devices providing a pervasive care. A home bathroom scale is an example of such a device, typically used to measure body weight and very often its composition (e.g. body water/fat percentage). In this paper, we analyzed a potential use of the bathroom scale to measure electrocardiogram (ECG) from electrodes located on the scale's tile. In particular...

Occurrence and Levels of Biogenic Amines in Beers Produced by Different Methods
PublikacjaThe concentration of biogenic amines (BAs) in beer depends, among other factors, on the activity of microorganisms, in particular lactic acid bacteria. In this work an analytical method based on derivatization with tosyl chloride and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was used to determine 17 BAs in samples of commercially available beers, and to monitor the changes in concentration of...

Selected concentration techniques for gas chromatographic analysis of environmental samples
PublikacjaThe paper describes the role and tasks of environmental analysis and monitoring. It emphasises the leading role played by gas chromatography, especially when coupled with suitable sample preparation. This is demonstrated by some literature evidence and mainly by the author's original work on the design of sample preparation apparatus and development of GC-based methods of determination of a wide variety of organic pollutants in...

Thermal Imaging in Wound Healing Diagnostics
PublikacjaResults of a project searching for objective, quantitative evaluation of postoperative wound healing in cardiosurgery are presented. We propose simple thermal models of the healing processes after cardiosurgery interventions as objective descriptors allowing classification of patients for extraction and following recovery at home or for prolonged treatment in a hospital. Classification of healing as the normal process or as a process...

Clinical studies of detecting COVID-19 from exhaled breath with electronic nose
PublikacjaThe COVID‑19 pandemic has attracted numerous research studies because of its impact on society and the economy. The pandemic has led to progress in the development of diagnostic methods, utilizing the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as the gold standard for coronavirus SARS‑CoV‑2 detection. Numerous tests can be used at home within 15 min or so but of with lower accuracy than PCR. There is still a need for point‑of‑care tests available...

Real-Time Facial Features Detection from Low Resolution Thermal Images with Deep Classification Models
PublikacjaDeep networks have already shown a spectacular success for object classification and detection for various applications from everyday use cases to advanced medical problems. The main advantage of the classification models over the detection models is less time and effort needed for dataset preparation, because classification networks do not require bounding box annotations, but labels at the image level only. Yet, after passing...

Creating a Remote Choir Performance Recording Based on an Ambisonic Approach
PublikacjaThe aim of this paper is three-fold. First, the basics of binaural and ambisonic techniques are briefly presented. Then, details related to audio-visual recordings of a remote performance of the Academic Choir of the Gdańsk University of Technology are shown. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, artists had a choice, namely, to stay at home and not perform or stay at home and perform. In fact, staying at home brought in the possibility...
