Simulation of fluid structure interaction in a novel design of high pressure axial piston hydraulic pump
PublikacjaA novel type of an axial, piston-driven high pressure hydraulic pump with variable capacity marks a significant improvement in the area of the hydraulic machinery design. Total discharge from hydrostatic forces eliminates a need for a servomechanism, thus simplifying operation, reducing weight and introducing the possibility of the pump displacement control by computer. PWK-type pumps, invented in the Gdansk University of Technology,...

Communication and Load Balancing Optimization for Finite Element Electromagnetic Simulations Using Multi-GPU Workstation
PublikacjaThis paper considers a method for accelerating finite-element simulations of electromagnetic problems on a workstation using graphics processing units (GPUs). The focus is on finite-element formulations using higher order elements and tetrahedral meshes that lead to sparse matrices too large to be dealt with on a typical workstation using direct methods. We discuss the problem of rapid matrix generation and assembly, as well as...

Processing of point cloud data retrieved from terrestrial laser scanning for structural modeling by Finite Element Method
PublikacjaFinite Element Method is one most popular contemporary method of strength analysis. The method is an advanced method for solving differential equations, based on discretization, which means that area is divided into finite elements. Each finite element has a solution of the equation approximated by specific functions and performing the actual calculations only for nodes of this division. Finite Element Method is widely used in...

Experimental Research on Insufficient Water Lubrication of Marine Stern Tube Journal Bearing with Elastic Polymer Bush
PublikacjaWater-lubricated bearings with polymer bushes are steadily gaining popularity due to their advantages, including environmental friendliness, relatively simple construction and long-term operation. Nevertheless, in practice instances of damage to such bearings occur due to insufficient or absent flow of the lubricating agent. In this study, experimental tests established that elastic polymer bush bearing is capable of operating...

Jacobi and gauss-seidel preconditioned complex conjugate gradient method with GPU acceleration for finite element method
PublikacjaIn this paper two implementations of iterative solvers for solving complex symmetric and sparse systems resulting from finite element method applied to wave equation are discussed. The problem under investigation is a dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) discretized by FEM with vector elements of the second order (LT/QN). The solvers use the preconditioned conjugate gradient (pcg) method implemented on Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)...

Simulations of Shear Zones and Cracks in Engineering Materials Using eXtended Finite Element Method
PublikacjaNumerical simulations of cracks and shear zones in quasi-brittle materials are presented. Extended Finite Element Method is used to describe both cracks and shear zones. In a description of tensile cracks, a Rankine criterion is assumed. A discrete Mohr-Coulomb law is adopted for simulations of shear zones. Results of simple numerical tests: unixial tension, bending and biaxial compression are demonstrated.

Simulation of unsteady flow over floodplain using the diffusive wave equation and the modified finite element method
PublikacjaWe consider solution of 2D nonlinear diffusive wave equation in a domain temporarily covered by a layer of water. A modified finite element method with triangular elements and linear shape functions is used for spatial discretization. The proposed modification refers to the procedure of spatial integration and leads to a more general algorithm involving a weighting parameter. The standard finite element method and the finite difference...

Hybrid Finite Element Method Development for Offshore Structures’ Calculation with the Implementation of Industry Standards
PublikacjaIn the design process of offshore steel structures, it is typical to employ commercial calculation codes in which simulation and evaluation of results are performed on the basis of the available standards (e.g. API, DNV, Lloyds). The modeling and solution rely on finite element methods and cover the simulation of the structure’s properties along with the influence of the marine environment – sea currents, wave and wind loading,...

Application of the distributed transfer function method and the rigid finite element method for modelling of 2-D and 3-D systems
PublikacjaIn the paper application of the Distributed Transfer Function Method and the Rigid Finite Element Method for modelling of 2-D and 3-D systems is presented. In this method an elastic body is divided into 1-D distributed parameter elements (strips or prisms). The whole body (divided into strips or prism) is described by a set of coupled partial differential equations. Solving this equations in the state space form it is possible...

Finite Element Approaches to Model Electromechanical, Periodic Beams
PublikacjaPeriodic structures have some interesting properties, of which the most evident is the presence of band gaps in their frequency spectra. Nowadays, modern technology allows to design dedicated structures of specific features. From the literature arises that it is possible to construct active periodic structures of desired dynamic properties. It can be considered that this may extend the scope of application of such structures. Therefore,...

SSFR Test of Synchronous Machine for Different Saturation Levels using Finite-Element Method
PublikacjaIn this paper the StandStill Frequency Response characteristics (SSFR) of saturated synchronous generator (SG) have been calculated using Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis. In order to validate proposed approach for unsaturated conditions FEM simulation from Flux2D software has been compared with the measurements performed on the 10 kVA, 4- poles synchronous machine ELMOR GCe64a of salient rotor construction, equipped with a...

Spectral Finite Element Method in Condition Monitoring and Damage Detection
PublikacjaIt is well known that the dynamic behaviour of engineering structures may carry very important and crucial information that can be further used for the assessment of their condition as well as detection of any damage induced. The current interest in monitoring techniques based on the propagation of guided elastic waves requires that numerical techniques used for modelling the phenomena associated must shift into the realm of high...

NEW DESIGNS OF CENTRIFUGAL MAGNETIC FLUID SEALS FOR ROTATING SHAFTS IN MARINE TECHNOLOGY
PublikacjaThe centrifugal magnetic fluid seals have important advantage over the conventional centrifugal seals. They maintain very good sealing capacity at static, medium and high speeds of shaft rotation, with the increased seal lifetime, and minimum torque and static friction. These seals are particularly useful in cases when the angular shaft velocity varies and sometimes decreases to nearly or exactly zero, such as in flywheel applications,...

A coupled constitutive model for fracture in plain concrete based on continuum theory with non-local softening and eXtended Finite Element Method
PublikacjaThe paper presents a constitutive model for concrete which combines a continuous and discontinuous fracture description. In a continuum regime, two different constitutive laws were used. First, a plasticity model with a Rankine failure criterion and an associated fl ow rule was used. Second, a constitutive law based on isotropic damage mechanics was formulated. In order to capture the width of a localized zone and to obtain mesh-independent...

FLUID BED COATING OF MINITABLETS AND PELLETS WITH OPTIMIZATION OF THE PROCESS BASED ON TAGUCHI METHOD
PublikacjaSmall particles like pellets are coated in fluid bed systems. This method can be also feasible for minitablets but the selection of optimal process parameters is complicated. The aim of the research was to optimize the coating process for minitablets and to compare the conditions required for pellets. Minimum fluidization velocities (umf) for 2.0 and 2.5 mm minitablets and 0.7-0.8 mm or 1.0-1.25 mm pellets were determined experimentally....

An Enhanced Reduced Basis Method for Wideband Finite Element Method Simulations
PublikacjaIn this paper, we present a novel strategy for selecting expansion points in the reduced basis method. A single computation of the error estimator is used to select a few expansion points in the multi-parameter space simultaneously. The number of selected points is determined adaptively, based on the accuracy of the current reduced model. The reliability and efficiency of this proposed approach are illustrated by numerical tests...
