High prevalence of Escherichia coli belonging to the B2+D phylogenetic group in inflammatory bowel disease
PublikacjaBACKGROUND: It is not clear which species of bacteria may be involved in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). One way of determining which bacteria might be likely candidates is to use culture-independent methods to identify microorganisms that are present in diseased tissues but not in controls. AIMS: (1) To assess the diversity of microbial communities of biopsy tissue using culture-independent methods; (2) to culture the bacteria...

Artificial intelligence support for disease detection in wireless capsule endoscopy images of human large bowel
PublikacjaIn the work the chosen algorithms of disease recognition in endoscopy images were described and compared for theirs efficiency. The algorithms were estimated with regard to utility for application in computer system's support for digestive system's diagnostics. Estimations were achieved in an advanced testing environment, which was built with use of the large collection of endoscopy movies received from Medical University in Gdańsk....

An algorithm to generate high dense packing of particles with various shapes
PublikacjaDiscrete Element Method (DEM) is one of available numerical methods to compute movement of particles in large scale simulations. The method has been frequently applied to simulate the cases of grain or bulk material as the major research issue. The paper describes a new method of generating high dense packing with mixed material of two different shape used in DEM simulation. The initial packing is an important parameter to control,...

A Formal Approach to Model the Expansion of Natural Events: The Case of Infectious Diseases
PublikacjaA formal approach to modeling the expansion of natural events is presented in this paper. Since the mathematical, statistical or computational methods used are not relevant for development, a modular framework is carried out that guides from the external observation down to the innermost level of the variables that have to appear in the future mathematical-computational formalization. As an example we analyze the expansion of Covid-19....

An application supporting the educational process of the respiratory system obstructive diseases detection
PublikacjaThe paper presents a description of functioning of a platform supporting the detection of obstructive diseases in the respiratory system education process. A 16-parameter model of the respiratory system simulated in the MATLAB/Simulink environment was set in the role of the tested patient. It has been linked to the control layer, developed in the LabVIEW environment, using the SIT library (Simulation Interface Toolkit). This layer...

Investigation of photothermolysis therapy of human skin diseases using optical phantoms
PublikacjaDermatological diseases, such as neurofibroma (Recklinghausen disease) or hemangiomas can be efficiently treated using photothermolysis from laser irradiation. We have utilized a developed 975 nm fiber diode laser as a low-cost alternative over common Nd:YAG lasers. This paper describes the investigations of interaction of 975 nm diode laser radiation-pulses with optical skin phantoms which were designed and manufactured in our...

Trustworthy Applications of ML Algorithms in Medicine - Discussion and Preliminary Results for a Problem of Small Vessels Disease Diagnosis.
PublikacjaML algorithms are very effective tools for medical data analyzing, especially at image recognition. Although they cannot be considered as a stand-alone diagnostic tool, because it is a black-box, it can certainly be a medical support that minimize negative effect of human-factors. In high-risk domains, not only the correct diagnosis is important, but also the reasoning behind it. Therefore, it is important to focus on trustworthiness...

The Influence of Selecting Regions from Endoscopic Video Frames on The Efficiency of Large Bowel Disease Recognition Algorithms
PublikacjaThe article presents our research in the field of the automatic diagnosis of large intestine diseases on endoscopic video. It focuses on the methods of selecting regions of interest from endoscopic video frames for further analysis by specialized disease recognition algorithms. Four methods of selecting regions of interest have been discussed: a. trivial, b. with the deletion of characteristic, endoscope specific additions to the...

Population-based case-control study of alpha 1-antitrypsin and SLC11A1 in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
PublikacjaBackground: Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are chronic inflammatory diseases of the digestive tract. Genetic factors and an abnormal immune response to infections are suspected to be involved in inflammatory bowel diseases. Methods: In the present study 300 blood samples from CD patients (n 100), UC patients (n 100), and healthy controls (n 100) were taken from a population-based case-control study. PCR assays...

Design of new cholinesterase inhibitors based on phosphorus analogs of tacrine as potential anti-Alzheimer’s disease agents
PublikacjaBased on the analysis of the determined free binding energy (using the AutoDock Vina 1.1.2 docking program), the most potent cholinesterase inhibitors were selected. Moreover, studies of 3D visualization of the results of molecular modeling led to the identification of potential sites for the interaction of new potential inhibitors with amino acid residues building active sites of investigated cholinesterases.

Autonomous Vehicle Navigation in Dense Urban Area in Global Positioning Context
PublikacjaAutonoumous vehicle services are likely to be adopted in dense urban area. Some research prove that autonomous transport might be capable of improving the transport needs of few times and as a consequence sustainability, congestion and safety may be improved. The world, hopefully is close to a transport revolution age. These studies are perhaps exaggerated, over-optimistic and far fro fully operational. The paper takes into account...
