Student Perspectives on the 2017 ESA Concurrent Engineering Challenge
PublicationIn September 2017, the first ESA Academy’s Concurrent Engineering Challenge (CEC) was held, giving 88 Master’s and PhD-level students from twelve ESA Member and Associate States a powerful platform to experience system engineering in an intense, fast paced, and real-world environment. Within four days, teams of physics and engineering students in Concurrent Design Facilities (CDF) located in Politecnico di Torino, Universidad Polit´ecnica...

Introducing concurrent engineering to space and satellite technology undergraduate course
PublicationIn recent decade concurrent engineering has become a de facto leading methodology of work in space, aeronautics and sometimes even automotive industry. It has been used in designing ESA space missions for 20 years now, with rst Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) built in ESTEC in 1998. Still, it has not become a universal standard in engineering, and universities are specically reluctant to adopt it into their curricula. As a result,...

Smart experience engineering to support collaborative design problems based on constraints modelling
PublicationEngineering design is a knowledge intensive process. Experts' experiences from different product life-cycle stages play a key role in problem solving during design decision making by linking up knowledge to find better solutions for a specific design problem. Different approaches have been used to support Collaborative and Concurrent Product Design, such as Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) modelling. Additionally, due to the...

A Generative Approach to Hull Design for a Small Watercraft
PublicationIn the field of ocean engineering, the task of spatial hull modelling is one of the most complicated problems in ship design. This study presents a procedure applied as a generative approach to the design problems for the hull geometry of small vessels using elements of concurrent design with multi-criteria optimisation processes. Based upon widely available commercial software, an algorithm for the mathematical formulation of...

Team project I (2020/21)
e-Learning CoursesWithin this team project, students will be designing a space mission. Each student will choose a subsystem: mission analysis, propulsion, communication, structure, mechanisms, power, thermal, onboard data handling. Together, by means of concurrent engineering a primary system definition will be completed.

Discussion of Derivability of Local Residual Stress Level from Magnetic Stray Field Measurement
PublicationThe NDT procedure dubbed ‘metal magnetic memory’ method and the related ISO 24497 standard has found wide industrial acceptance in some countries, mainly in Russia and China. The method has been claimed by some researchers (Roskosz and Bieniek in NDT&E Int 45:55–62, 2012; Wilson et al. in Sens Actuators A 135:381–387, 2007) as having potential for quantitative determination of local residual stress state in engineering structures,...

Real-time monitoring of volatiles and particles emitted from thermoplastic filaments during 3D printing
PublicationThe proliferation of consumer-grade three-dimensional (3D) printers using fused deposition, also known as fused filament fabrication, has given rise to concerns over the exposure of users to potentially harmful substances. Thermoplastic filaments made of different polymers are extruded through a heated printer nozzle and deposited layer by layer on a build platform to form the printed object. This process leads to the emission...

Collaborative Editing of Ontologies Using Fluent Editor and Ontorion
PublicationIn this paper we present two tools that we are developing at Cognitum for managing large knowledge bases: Fluent Editor and the Ontorion Server. We have been able to build a collaborative knowledge management system using these two tools. We show how this system can be used for the concurrent modification of knowledge and how we can manage multiple modifications to the same knowledge.

Quechers sample preparation method variants for analysis of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables
PublicationThis article describes the comparison of different versions of an easy, rapid and low-cost sample preparation approach for the determination of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables by concurrent use of gas and liquid chromatography coupled to MS or ECD for detection. The sample preparation approach is known as QuEChERS, which stands for quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe. It is a combination of liquid-liquid...

Rapid design of miniaturised branch-line couplers through concurrent cell optimisation and surrogate-assisted fine-tuning
PublicationIn this study, the authors introduce a methodology for low-cost simulation-driven design optimisation of highly miniaturised branch-line couplers (BLCs). The first stage of their design approach exploits fast concurrent optimisation of geometrically dependent, but electromagnetically isolated cells that constitute a BLC. The cross-coupling effects between the cells are taken into account in the second stage, where a surrogate-assisted...

Parallel implementation of background subtraction algorithms for real-time video processing on a supercomputer platform
PublicationResults of evaluation of the background subtraction algorithms implemented on a supercomputer platform in a parallel manner are presented in the paper. The aim of the work is to chose an algorithm, a number of threads and a task scheduling method, that together provide satisfactory accuracy and efficiency of a real-time processing of high resolution camera images, maintaining the cost of resources usage at a reasonable level. Two...

seafloor characterisation combined approach using multibeam sonar echo signal processing and image analysis
PublicationThe authors propose the approach to seafloor characterisation which relies on the combined, concurrent use of two different techniques: (i) multibeam sonar image analysis and (ii) multibeam seabed echoes processing. The first technique is based on constructing the grey-level sonar images of the seabed extracted from the echoes received in the consecutive soundings. Then, the set of parameters describing the local region of sonar...

Antibacterial Porous Systems Based on Polylactide Loaded with Amikacin
PublicationThree porous matrices based on poly(lactic acid) are proposed herein for the controlled release of amikacin. The materials were fabricated by the method of spraying a surface liquid. Description is given as to the possibility of employing a modifier, such as a silica nanocarrier, for prolonging the release of amikacin, in addition to using chitosan to improve the properties of the materials, e.g., stability and sorption capacity....

Seafloor characterisation using multibeam sonar echo signal processing and image analysis
PublicationThe authors propose the approach to multibeam seafloor characterisation which relies on the combined, concurrent use of two different techniques of multibeam sonar data processing. The first one is based on constructing the grey-level sonar images of seabed using the echoes received in the consecutive beams. Then, the parameters describing the local region of sonar image, namely, the local standard deviation of a grey level, and...

Controlled grafting of vinylic monomers on polyolefins: a robust mathematical modeling approach
PublicationExperimental and mathematical modeling analyses were used for controlling melt free-radical grafting of vinylic monomers on polyolefins and, thereby, reducing the disturbance of undesired cross-linking of polyolefins. Response surface, desirability function, and artificial intelligence methodologies were blended to modeling/optimization of grafting reaction in terms of vinylic monomer content, peroxide initiator concentration,...
