Rengel Cane Sia Doctoral Candidate
PeopleI'm Rengel, born and raised in the Philippines. As an undergraduate I did kinetic modeling on Copper-catalyzed atom transfer radical addition (ATRA). Then I was inspired to do both theoretical and experimental studies, which led me to propose my master's thesis on Synthesis, Computational, Electrochemical, and Photoconductivity Studies on Naphthalene and its derivatives. This led to a master's degree in Chemistry in the Mindanao...

Modeling the Structure, Dynamics, and Transformations of Proteins with the UNRES Force Field
PublicationThe physics-based united-residue (UNRES) model of proteins ( www.unres.pl ) has been designed to carry out large-scale simulations of protein folding. The force field has been derived and parameterized based on the principles of statistical-mechanics, which makes it independent of structural databases and applicable to treat nonstandard situations such as, proteins that contain D-amino-acid residues. Powered by Langevin dynamics...

A Study on Audio Signal Processed by "Instant Mastering"
PublicationAn increasing amount of music produced in home- and project-studios results in development and growth of "automatic mastering services". The presented investigation explores changes introduced to audio signal by various online mastering platforms. A music set consisting of 10 songs produced in small facilities was processed by eight on-line automatic mastering services. Additionally, some laboratory-constructed signals were tested....

Database of the minimal sets of Lefschetz periods for Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms of a connected sum of g real projective planes.
Open Research DataMorse–Smale diffeomorphisms, structurally stable and having relatively simple dynamics, constitute an important subclass of diffeomorphisms that were carefully studied during past decades. For a given Morse–Smale diffeomorphism one can consider “Minimal set of Lefschetz periods”, which provides the information about the set of periodic points of considered...

Gender Disparity in the FinTech Sector: Systematic Literature Review
PublicationThe main objective of this chapter is to identify research areas of FinTech activity in which gender disparity has been observed. In addition, we shall identify how the development of FinTech reduces the gender gap. A systematic literature review using the PRISMA concept is the preferred research method. Publications were searched in the following databases: Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar using the formula “FinTech AND...

Sound quality metrics applied to road noise evaluation
PublicationRoad noise monitoring systems typically measure sound levels in specific time periods. The more insightful approach suggests to measure also the nature of noise. Sound quality of sounds such as car noise can be objectively evaluated by several parameters. One of them is psychoacoustic annoyance, described by loudness, tone color, and the temporal structure of sound. In this paper the assessment of several sound quality parameters, such...

Evaluation of a Novel Approach to Virtual Bass Synthesis Strategy
PublicationThe aim of this paper is to present a novel approach to the Virtual Bass Synthesis (VBS) strategy applied to portable computers. The developed algorithms involve intelligent, rule-based settings of bass synthesis parameters with regard to music genre of an audio excerpt and the type of a portable device in use. The Smart VBS algorithm performs the synthesis based on a nonlinear device (NLD) with artificial controlling synthesis...

Using Redis supported by NVRAM in HPC applications
PublicationNowadays, the efficiency of storage systems is a bottleneck in many modern HPC clusters. High performance in the traditional approach – processing using files – is often difficult to obtain because of a model’s complexity and its read/write patterns. An alternative approach is to apply a key-value database, which usually has low latency and scales well. On the other hand, many key-value stores suffer from a limitation of memory...

Using MusicXML to evaluate accuracy of OMR Systems
PublicationIn this paper a methodology for automatic accuracy evaluation in optical music recognition (OMR) applications is proposed. Presented approach assumes using ground truth images together with digital music scores describing their content. The automatic evaluation algorithm measures differences between the tested score and the reference one, both stored in MusicXML format. Some preliminary test results of this approach are presented...

Subjective tests for gathering knowledge for applying color grading to video clips automatically
PublicationThe analysis of film music concerning caused emotions may allow for a more accurate adaptation of the color of the film in the context of color grading. Therefore, this paper aims to gather knowledge on the correlation between the applied color palette to a video clip, music associated with a particular shot, and emotions evoked. For that purpose, subjective tests are prepared in which several video clips are presented with or...
