The origins of the brick architecture in Pomerania
PublicationTraditionally, brick is one of the most popular building materials on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. Although the origins of brick architecture have been the subject of numerous research studies, their results were focused on the Kingdom of Denmark, merchant-towns and the State of the Teutonic Order. Most scholars claimed that Pomeranian architecture had not been as developed as that in the neighbouring countries. Moreover,...

The Brick Face of Modernism and Architecture of Gustav Oelsner
PublicationThere are many reasons that make the work of Gustav Oelsner worth to present. One of the reasons is comparison of two different ways of development of two cities, Gdynia (an exhibition of work of Gustav Oelsner was presented in Gdynia in April and May of 2011) and Altona, were Oelsner created his architecture. These two cities has grown at the side of their big neighbours, Gdansk and Hamburg. They are harbour cities and their...

Analysis of Historic Brick Walls' Strengthening Methods
PublicationAnalysis of the behavior of historical brick walls is difficult and complicated. However, computer calculations are being increasingly used in the evaluation of cultural heritage buildings and some of their elements. The aim of this paper is to analyze the historic brick walls reinforcement. Different methods of strengthening are compared and discussed. Numerical analysis, based on finite element method, was conducted on the assumption...

Ultrasonic Tomography of Brick Columns Based on FEM Calculations
PublicationUltrasonic tomography is one of the most developed method of non-destructive testing. Despite being used mainly in medicine, it is becoming more and more popular as a method for monitoring of structural elements. It allows to examine the internal structure and technical condition of the tested element. This paper investigates the influence of crosssectional geometry on an obtained tomographic image. Wave propagation signals were...

Structural analysis as a supporting method for the research of the medieval brick architecture
PublicationChronology of brick historical buildings might be established much more precisely than the chronology of stone ones due to the architectural and metrical analysis of bricks, mortars and brickworks. Comparison of historical sources allows to reconstruct the previous stages of constructing monuments. Causations between transformations and developments of monuments are usually interpreted as the results of artistic or ideological...

COMPARATIVE NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT STRENGTHENING SYSTEMS OF HISTORICAL BRICK ARCHES
PublicationThe article presents a comparative numerical analysis of various ways to strengthen historical brick arches. Five ways of strengthening brick arches with steel tie-rods have been proposed. Two of these involve the use of braces wrapped around pillars supporting the arch connected with a tie-rod; another two ways involve the use of the tie-rods with welded metal sheets of different sizes; the last way involves the use of the tie-rod...

Photos and rendered images of LEGO bricks
PublicationThe paper describes a collection of datasets containing both LEGO brick renders and real photos. The datasets contain around 155,000 photos and nearly 1,500,000 renders. The renders aim to simulate real-life photos of LEGO bricks allowing faster creation of extensive datasets. The datasets are publicly available via the Gdansk University of Technology “Most Wiedzy” institutional repository. The source files of all tools used during...

Small Hydropower Plants in Pomerania: The Example of Evolution of Modern Industrial Brick Architecture
PublicationModernism is usually recognized and associated with the aesthetics of the International Style, represented by white-plastered, horizontally articulated architecture with skimpy decoration, where function was the main imperative of the architects’ ambitions. The brick face of Modernism in Northern Europe reflected, in fact, the complexity of the modern change, breaking ties with the historic styles of the 19th century and being...

Analysis of the grain boundary conductivity for nanocrystalline doped ceria using the brick layer model.
PublicationW pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań elektrycznych i mikrostrukturalnych ceru domieszkowanego itrem.

Impregnation vibro-pressed concrete pavement bricks.
PublicationW materiałach przedstawiono wyniki badań uzyskanych podczas prób impregnacji wibroprasowanych elementów betonowych. Celem badań było określenie odpowiedniego składu kompozycji impregnacyjnej, aby uzyskać najlepszy efekt zabezpieczenia powierzchni betonu przed wnikaniem cieczy organicznych np. oleju mineralnego.

Video of LEGO Bricks on Conveyor Belt Dataset Series
PublicationThe dataset series titled Video of LEGO bricks on conveyor belt is composed of 14 datasets containing video recordings of a moving white conveyor belt. The recordings were created using a smartphone camera in Full HD resolution. The dataset allows for the preparation of data for neural network training, and building of a LEGO sorting machine that can help builders to organise their collections.

How to Sort Them? A Network for LEGO Bricks Classification
PublicationLEGO bricks are highly popular due to the ability to build almost any type of creation. This is possible thanks to availability of multiple shapes and colors of the bricks. For the smooth build process the bricks need to properly sorted and arranged. In our work we aim at creating an automated LEGO bricks sorter. With over 3700 different LEGO parts bricks classification has to be done with deep neural networks. The question arises...

Retrofitted vibro-pressed pavement bricks and their impregnation in modern architecture.
PublicationRecent construction projects require new properties of concrete building materials. The paper describes the technological methods of retrofitting of vibro-pressed concrete pavement brick and shows the results of improving physical properties of concrete by application of different impregnation agents.

Emotion Recognition Based on Facial Expressions of Gamers
PublicationThis article presents an approach to emotion recognition based on facial expressions of gamers. With application of certain methods crucial features of an analyzed face like eyebrows' shape, eyes and mouth width, height were extracted. Afterwards a group of artificial intelligence methods was applied to classify a given feature set as one of the following emotions: happiness, sadness, anger and fear. The approach presented in this...

An unorthodox view on the problem of tracking facial expressions
PublicationRecent developments in imaging cameras has opened a new way of analyzing facial expression. We would like to take advantage from this new technology and present a method of imaging and processing images of human face as a response to the particular stimuli. The response in this case is represented by the facial expressions and the stimuli are still images representing six basic emotions according to Eckmann. Working hypothesis...

On Facial Expressions and Emotions RGB-D Database
PublicationThe goal of this paper is to present the idea of creating reference database of RGB-D video recordings for recognition of facial expressions and emotions. Two different formats of the recordings used for creation of two versions of the database are described and compared using different criteria. Examples of first applications using databases are also presented to evaluate their usefulness.
