Application of RCD and AFDD in low-voltage electrical installations for protection against fire
PublikacjaThe paper presents the principles of application of residual current devices (RCDs) in protection against fire. The permissible rated residual operating current of RCDs is discussed. Limitations in the operation of RCDs in this type of protection are indicated. A new type of a protective device against fire – arc fault detection device (AFDD) – is described.

The effect of hybridization of fire retarded epoxy/flax-cotton fiber laminates by expanded vermiculite: Structure-property relationship study
PublikacjaThe study describes the hybridization of epoxy/flax-cotton (EP/FF) composites containing ammonium polyphosphate (APP) with micrometric expanded vermiculite (VMT) (1–10 wt%). The efficiency of hybridization of flame retarded epoxy/flax-cotton composites was assessed by performing static tensile and flexural strength evaluation, supplemented by impact strength measurements of the composites. Moreover, thermal and thermomechanical...

Capillary pumped loop as a tool for collecting large heat fluxes from electronic devices on warships
PublikacjaThe combat potential of future warships will be directly related to the use of modern electronic devices being parts of advanced systems, such as, for instance, radar systems, fire aiming systems, fire detection systems, electric drive systems, and even electronic and radio-electronic weaponry, railguns and lasers, installed on these warships. The capacity and functionality of these devices is continually increasing, at decreasing...

Genetic Positioning of Fire Stations Utilizing Grid-computing Platform
PublikacjaA chapter presents a model for determining near-optimal locations of fire stations based on topography of a given area and location of forests, rivers, lakes and other elements of the site. The model is based on principals of genetic algorithms and utilizes the power of the grid to distribute and execute in parallel most performance-demanding computations involved in the algorithm.

Evaluation of fire hazard in electrical installations due to unfavorable ambient thermal conditions
PublikacjaEvaluation of fire hazard caused by electrical installations is a difficult and important topic, and it limits the possibility of loss of life or health of people, as well as the occurrence of significant property damage. In particular, this hazard was caused by power cables and especially photovoltaic (PV) installations. The authors proved that power cables directly exposed to strong solar radiation are likely to exceed maximum...

PV installations and the safety of residential buildings
PublikacjaThe dynamic development of the photovoltaic industry entails threats that have a direct impact on the safety of residential buildings. Appropriate design of a PV installation can be a challenge due to the multifaceted nature of this issue. The designer should take into account issues related to the selection of electrical parameters of the installation, adapting lightning and surge protection in accordance...

An intelligent cellular automaton scheme for modelling forest fires
PublikacjaForest fires have devastating consequences for the environment, the economy and human lives. Understanding their dynamics is therefore crucial for planning the resources allocated to combat them effectively. In a world where the incidence of such phenomena is increasing every year, the demand for efficient and accurate computational models is becoming increasingly necessary. In this study, we perform a revision of an initial proposal...

Metrological analysis of precision of the system of delivering a water capsule for explosive production of water aerosol
PublikacjaIn this paper an analysis of precision of the system controlling delivery by a helicopter of water-capsule designed for extinguishing large scale fires is presented. The analysis was performed using the numerical method of distribution propagation (Monte Carlo method) supplemented with results of application of the uncertainty propagation method. In addition the optimum conditions for the airdrop are determined to ensure achievement...

Possible uses of crisis situation aiding system in virtual world simulation
PublikacjaMany of the real world crisis situations like spreading fire, hostile units attack, flood, and etc. are commonly used in computer games where a simulation of extensive virtual world is crucial. This paper presents some ideas for possible uses of existing crisis situation aiding system in such environments. Moreover it shows how this kind of system can be taught during subsequent games with a large number of players.

Rigid polyurethane foams with different flame retardants and their physical and mechanical properties
PublikacjaRigid polyurethane foams (PUFs) containing 3, 6 or 9 % of one of of two selected fire retardants (FR): oligomeric ethyl ethylene phosphate (Fyrol PNX) and expandable graphite (EG) were prepared, inspected and compared to foam without that fillers as the control. The thermal stability of PUFs was described by horizontal test according to norm: UL 94 HB. Compressive strength and physical properties (density, fragility and water absorption)...

Firing map for periodically and almost-periodically driven integrate-and-fire models: a dynamical systems approach
PublikacjaWe consider the Leaky Integrate-and-Fire and Perfect Integrator models of neuron’s dynamics with the input function being periodic and almost-periodic (in the sense of Stepanov). In particular we analyze properties and dynamics of the so-called firing map, which iterations give timings of consecutive spikes of a neuron. In case of a periodic input function we provide a detailed description of the sequence of interspike-intervals,...

Analysis of Interspike-Intervals for the General Class of Integrate-and-Fire Models with Periodic Drive
PublikacjaWe study one-dimensional integrate-and-fire models of the general type x˙=F (t, x) and analyze properties of the firing map which iterations recover consecutive spike timings. We impose very week constraints for the regularity of the function F (t, x), e.g. often it suffices to assume that F is continuous. If additionally F is periodic in t, using mathematical study of the displacement sequence of an orientation preserving circle...

Noise related to gas bottles explosions
PublikacjaModern industrialized world is in a never ending danger of accidents and catastrophes of technical nature. Some of them may involve fires and explosions of gas storage bottles or containers. Technical University of Gdansk, Poland performed numerous tests where bottles containing acetylene, oxygen, hydrogen, CO2, LPG, LNG or CNG were blown due to excessive temperature caused by fire. Although those experiments were not focused on...

Smoking: Traditional
PublikacjaSmoking, drying, and salting belong to the oldest methods of food preservation. Meat hung by the fire was preserved by a combination of drying and smoking. Often the raw material was first pickled in brine. In different regions of the world various procedures have been developed, best suited for treating meats and fish for specific purposes. Smoking extended the shelf life and imparted very desirable, new sensory properties to...

Firing map of an almost periodic input function
PublikacjaIn mathematical biology and the theory of electric networks the firing map of an integrate-and-fire system is a notion of importance. In order to prove useful properties of this map authors of previous papers assumed that the stimulus function f of the system ẋ = f(t,x) is continuous and usually periodic in the time variable. In this work we show that the required properties of the firing map for the simplified model ẋ = f(t) still...

Performance of Passive and Active Balancing Systems of Lithium Batteries in Onerous Mine Environment
PublikacjaTo use lithium-iron-phosphate battery packs in the supply systems of any electric mining equipment and/or machines, the required conditions of work safety must be met. This applies in particular to coal mines endangered by fire and/or explosion. To meet the spark-safety conditions, the cells (together with the battery management system—BMS) must be isolated from the influence of the environment, and therefore placed in special...
