Application of Biotests
PublicationIntensywny rozwój nowych technologii, postępująca urbanizacja i konsumpcyjny styl życia człowieka wywołują niekorzystne, a niekiedy nawet nieodwracalne zmiany w środowisku. Do powietrza, wód powierzchniowych i gleb dostaje się szeroka gama zanieczyszczeń pochodzących głównie ze źródeł antropogennych. Organizmy żywe funkcjonują w nierozerwalnej sieci powiązań między sobą i otaczającym je środowiskiem. Pomiędzy elementami sieci istnieje...

Application of biotests in environmental research
PublicationPrzedstawiono możliwości wykorzystania testów opartych na wykorzystaniu materiału biologicznego w badaniach środowiskowych. Dokonano klasyfikacji znanych typów biotestów wykorzystywanych do sumarycznej oceny stopnia skażenia poszczególnych elementów środowiska. Przedstawiono również zebrane informacje na temat wrażliwości niektórych gatunków roślin i zwierząt na substancje toksyczne obecne w środowisku.

Zintegrowany system badań zanieczyszczenia środowiska oparty na wykorzystaniu analityki chemicznej i biotestów = Integrated system for assessment of environment quality based on chemical analysis and biotests/Integrated system for assessment of environment quality based on chemical analysis and biotests/

Analytical and bioanalytical problems associated with the toxicity of elemental sulfur in the environment
PublicationWe summarize the state of knowledge on the toxicity and the bioavailability of elemental sulfur. We also present: analytical methods used to determine the elemental sulfur content of samples with complex matrices; and, problems and difficulties encountered while using biotests for samples containing elemental sulfur.

Revision of Biological Methods for Determination of EDC Presence and Their Endocrine Potential
PublicationEndocrine-disrupting compounds (EDC) are chemicals responsible for disturbances in the hormonal balance of organisms. This group of chemicals includes both egzogenic and endogenic substances or their mixtures that impact functioning of natural hormones in organisms. In the available literature one can find information on the application of chromatographic and related techniques in the analysis of environmental samples for detection,...

Novel approach to ecotoxicological risk assessment of sediments cores around the shipwreck by the use of self-organizing maps
PublicationMarine and coastal pollution plays an increasingly important role due to recent severe accidents which drew attention to the consequences of oil spills causing widespread devastation of marine ecosystems. All these problems cannot be solved without conducting environmental studies in the area of possible oil spill and performing chemometric evaluation of the data obtained looking for similar patterns among pollutants and optimize...

Environmental risk assessment of Polish wastewater treatment plant activity
PublicationWastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play an extremely important role in shaping modern society's environmental wellbeing and awareness, however only well operated and supervised systems can be considered as environmentally sustainable. For this reason, an attempt was undertaken to assess the environmental burden posed by WWTPs in major Polish cities by collecting water samples prior to and just after wastewater release points....

Aptamer based tools for environmental and therapeutic monitoring: A review of developments, applications, future perspectives
PublicationNucleic acids in the form of aptamers play a growing and significant role in the targeted and rapid analysis of environmental sample composition and medical analyses. In this paper, the review of both aptamers synthesis methods as well as application of these short chain oligonucleotides (with critical comments on their strong and weak features) are given. The first ones include: systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment...

Assessing Acute Toxicity and Endocrine Disruption Potential of Selected Packages Internal Layers Extracts
PublicationThe focus of the present study is migration of toxic substances from food contact materials and its actual influence on the health of the final consumer. Two food packagings (metal cans, TetraPack®) and five simulants medias (water, ethanol, acetic acid, DMSO, artificial saliva) were selected for simulation studies. For assessment of acute toxicity and endocrine disruption potential of extract samples, two biotests (Microtox® and...

Potential Toxic Effects of Airport Runoff Water Samples on the Environment
PublicationDespite the positive aspects of the intensive development of aviation, airports are considered large-scale polluters. Pollution caused by runoff water (stormwater) is one of the major problems related to airport operations. The aim of this study was to characterize the potential toxic impact on aquatic life from runoff water discharges from four international airports in Europe. Samples of stormwater were collected at airports...

Remediation of soils on municipal rendering plant territories using Miscanthus × giganteus
PublicationPhytoremediation, as a cost-effective, highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and green approach, gained attention to the removal of metals, including heavy metals, from contaminated soils. The toxic nature of heavy metals can have an adverse effect on human health and the ecosystem, and their removal remains a worldwide problem. Therefore, in this study, a field experiment was carried out to evaluate the potential of Miscanthus × giganteus...

Ranking of ecotoxisity tests for underground water assessment using the Hasse diagram technique
PublicationThe present study deals with the novel application of the Hasse diagram technique (HDT) for the specific ranking of ecotoxicity tests capable of assessment of underground water quality. The area studied is a multi-municipal landfill in the northern Poland. The monitoring network of the landfill constitutes of 27 piezometers for underground water monitoring and two observation points at surface water courses. After sampling, chemical...

Endocrine Disrupting Compounds – Problems and Challenges
PublicationIn this chapter, information about some of the estrogenic compounds and their environmental fate and biological influence can be found. Special attention is paid to the review of the analytical approaches used at the stages of detection and determination of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds (EDCs) in the environmental samples. Also, a brief characterization of both cellular and non-cellular bioassays is presented. The discovery of...

Bioassays as one of the Green Chemistry tools for assessing environmental quality: A review
PublicationFor centuries, mankind has contributed to irreversible environmental changes, but due to the modern science of recent decades, scientists are able to assess the scale of this impact. The introduction of laws and standards to ensure environmental cleanliness requires comprehensive environmental monitoring, which should also meet the requirements of Green Chemistry. The broad spectrum of Green Chemistry principle applications should...

Assessment of the Bulgarian Wastewater Treatment Plants’ Impact on the Receiving Water Bodies
PublicationDeterioration of water quality is a major problem world widely according to many international non-governmental organizations (NGO). As one of the European Union (EU) countries, Bulgaria is also obliged by EU legislation to maintain best practices in assessing surface water quality and the efficiency of wastewater treatment processes. For these reasons studies were undertaken to utilize ecotoxicological (Microtox®, Phytotoxkit...
