Aktywne modele kształtu i ich biometryczne zastosowania = Active shape models and their biometric applications

Visual Lip Contour Detection for the Purpose of Speech Recognition
PublicationA method for visual detection of lip contours in frontal recordings of speakers is described and evaluated. The purpose of the method is to facilitate speech recognition with visual features extracted from a mouth region. Different Active Appearance Models are employed for finding lips in video frames and for lip shape and texture statistical description. Search initialization procedure is proposed and error measure values are...

A novel approach to energy safety improvement in the marine power plants with active power surge compensator
PublicationPaper raises a point of power surges and theirs adverse effects in the marine power plants. The article explains a source of surges appearance, and presents measurements carried out on a modern ship. It discusses effects of dynamic power transients on the ship’s energy safety. Finally it proposes, a novel approach for power surge elimination, based on medium voltage active conditioner. As well as it propose the topology and control...

Variable length sliding models for banking clients face biometry
PublicationAn experiment was organized in 100 bank branches to acquire biometric samples from nearly 5000 clients including face images. A procedure for creating face verification models based on continuously expanding database of biometric samples is proposed, implemented, and tested. The presented model applies to circumstances where it is possible to collect and to take into account new biometric samples after each positive verification...

Regularized Local Multivariate Reduced-Order Models With Nonaffine Parameter Dependence
PublicationThis paper addresses a singular problem, not yet discussed in the literature, which occurs when parametric reduced-order models are created using a subspace projection approach with multiple concatenated projection bases. We show that this technique may lead to the appearance of localized artifacts in the frequency characteristics of a system, even when the reduced-order projection basis is rich enough to describe the original...

Generic appearance of objective results in quantum measurements
PublicationMeasurement is of central interest in quantum mechanics as it provides the link between the quantum world and the world of everyday experience. One of the features of everyday experience is its robust, objective character, contrasting the delicate nature of quantum systems. Here we analyze in a completely model-independent way the celebrated von Neumann measurement process, using recent techniques of information flow, studied in...

Historic Urban Settings, LED Illumination and its Impact on Nighttime Perception, Visual Appearance, and Cultural Heritage Identity
PublicationMany cities, towns and villages around the world have adopted new Lighting Emitting Diode (LED) technology in order to save energy, operational and maintenance costs. While energy-efficient, these light sources have a critical effect on the appearance of historic sites at night and the technology has unique properties and numerous inherent drawbacks that present challenges to decision makers as well as inexperienced lighting...

The semi-Markov model of the process of appearance of sea-going ship propupsion system ability and inability states in application to determining the reliablity of these systems
PublicationThe article presents possible application of the theory of semi-Markov processes in creating the eight-state model of the process of appearance of the propulsion systems ability and inability states on sea-going vessels performing transportation tasks in a relatively long operating time t (t → ∞). The model has been proved to be able to be successfully used for determining the reliability of the abovementioned systems. The probability...

Instrument detection and pose estimation with rigid part mixtures model in video-assisted surgeries
PublicationLocalizing instrument parts in video-assisted surgeries is an attractive and open computer vision problem. A working algorithm would immediately find applications in computer-aided interventions in the operating theater. Knowing the location of tool parts could help virtually augment visual faculty of surgeons, assess skills of novice surgeons, and increase autonomy of surgical robots. A surgical tool varies in appearance due to...

EXAMINING INFLUENCE OF VIDEO FRAMERATE AND AUDIO/VIDEO SYNCHRONIZATION ON AUDIO-VISUAL SPEECH RECOGNITION ACCURACY
PublicationThe problem of video framerate and audio/video synchronization in audio-visual speech recogni-tion is considered. The visual features are added to the acoustic parameters in order to improve the accuracy of speech recognition in noisy conditions. The Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients are used on the acoustic side whereas Active Appearance Model features are extracted from the image. The feature fusion approach is employed. The...

Surgical tool tracking by on-line selection of structural correlation filters
PublicationIn visual tracking of surgical instruments, correlation filtering finds the best candidate with maximal correlation peak. However, most trackers only consider capturing target appearance but not target structure. In this paper we propose surgical instrument tracking approach that integrates prior knowledge related to rotation of both shaft and tool tips. To this end, we employ rigid parts mixtures model of an instrument. The rigidly...

Biological responses to environmental contamination. How can metal pollution impact signal honesty in avian species?
PublicationEnvironmental pollution, for example with metals, can significantly affect the ecosystem balance leading to severe changes. Biologically active pigments are relevant for the appearance and condition of birds. Melanin and carotenoid particles are the most frequently deposited pigments in avian integument. They are responsible for the majority of colors of bird plumage. The phenotypic expression can be affected by metal contamination....

Aestheticization of Flowcharts
PublicationOne of the important issues of diagrams is their aesthetics. In this paper a method of its formalization for freehand drawn flowcharts is proposed. In order to formalize the evaluation of flowcharts' aesthetics a criterion consisting of several measures is proposed. Based on this criterion the algorithms for automatic optimization of flowcharts' appearance are proposed.

The Dominant Influence of Plastic Deformation Induced Residual Stress on the Barkhausen Effect Signal in Martensitic Steels
PublicationThe paper presents the results of investigation of the influence of plastic deformation on the magnetic properties of martensitic steel (P91 grade). The properties of the hysteresis loops as well as of the Barkhausen effect (BE) signal are analysed for both tensile and compressive loading up to ε = 10% of plastic deformation. The choice of the steel and of the deformation range is unique, since for such combination one can expect...

Un nuovo fiume carsico. La deindustrializzazione in Italia nel dibattito pubblico
PublicationThe article examines the evolution of the debate on deindustrialization in Italy since its first appearance in 1980's up to the present day. Dramatic alarms alternate with long silences in a framework, both national and international, in which the most important economic organizations are struggling, apparently without success, to find a common definition of deindustrialization.
