Comparison of the main bioactive compounds and antioxidants in garlic and white and red onion after treatment protocols
PublicationPolski czosnek, biała i czerwona cebula była blanszowana, gotowana, smażona i poddawana działaniom promieniowania mikrofalowego. Następnie były w nich oznaczane m.in. takie związki jak polifenole, flawonoidy, kwas ascorbinowy i aktywne antyoksydanty. Udowodniono, że blanszowanie, smażenie i poddawanie działaniu promieniowania mikrofalowego nie wpływa znacząco na zmiejszenie zawartości badanych związków w czosnku i cebuli. Wyznaczono...

Comparison of the content of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of white, red and black currants (Ribes sp.) extracts
PublicationThe aim of this study was to compare the content of antioxidant compounds and the antioxidant activity of extracts from white, red and black currants (Ribes sp.). The chemical properties verified included determinations of anthocyanins and other phenols by HPLC-DAD-MS, total antioxidant activity by standard spectrophotometric tests (ABTS, DPPH and FCR), and profiles of antioxidants by TLC with visualization reagents (ABTS, DPPH,...

Chemical composition of shells from red (Strongylocentrotus franciscanum) and green (Strongylocentrotus droeba-chiensis) sea urchin
PublicationThe shells from red and green sea urchins accounted for 47.9 and 40.7% of their body weights, respectively. The red and green sea urchin shells contained 91.08 and 90.77% minerals and 4.06 and 4.99% proteins, respectively. The shells did not contain any chitin. Sea urchin shells had a relatively large amount of naphthoquinone pigments, 121 mg per 100 g in red and 163 mg per 100 g in green species. The small quantities of glucosamine...

Young shoots of red cabbage are a better source of selected nutrients and glucosinolates in comparison to the vegetable at full maturity
PublicationCruciferous vegetables are a valuable source of ingredients with health benefits. The most characteristic compounds of cruciferous vegetables with identified anticancer properties are glucosinolates. Young shoots and sprouts of red cabbage are becoming a popular fresh food rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds. The objective of this research was to determine, for the first time in a comprehensive approach, whether young shoots...

Young Shoots of White and Red Headed Cabbages Like Novel Sources of Glucosinolates as Well as Antioxidative Substances
PublicationMost literature data indicate that the diet rich in plant products reduces the risk of developing chronic non-communicable diseases and cancer. Brassica vegetables are almost exclusively synthesizing glucosinolates. Glucosinolates are higher in sprouts than in mature plants, being related to the activity of the specific myrosinase involved in the degradation of glucosinolates during developmental stages. This study compares the...

Extraction and Analysis of Bisphenols and Their Derivatives in Infant and Toddler Ready-to-feed Meals by Ultrasound-assisted Membrane Extraction Followed by LC MS/MS
PublicationThis research developed an ultrasound-assisted membrane extraction coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the determination of nineteen bisphenols and their derivatives in infant and toddler ready-to-feed meals. The calibration curves for all analytes were linear in the tested range, and the limit of detection and limit of quantitation were in the range 0.27 to 0.79 ng/g and 0.80 to 2.4 ng/g, respectively....

Detection of UPEC IH11128 ability to form biofilm in a standard congo red (CR) method of colony staining.
Open Research DataA standard method of testing E. coli's ability to form biofilm is based on the analysis of morphologyof bacterial colonies grown on yeast extract/casamino acids (YESCA) nutrient agar medium containing congored (CR) as an indicator dye of ECM production. The CR dye adsorbed from the culture medium bybacteria binds to the components of the ECM, including...

Removal of Arsenic from Wastewater Using Hydrochar Prepared from Red Macroalgae: Investigating Its Adsorption Efficiency and Mechanism
PublicationArsenic (As) is a prominent carcinogen component produced via both geogenic and anthropogenic processes, posing serious risks to human health. This study aimed to investigate the potential of hydrochar prepared from red macroalgae for removing As from synthetic wastewater. The hydrochar was produced through 5 h hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) treatment at 200 °C, and then, chemically activated with ferric chloride hexahydrate...

High Temperature Drying Process of Beech Wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) with Different Zones of Sapwood and Red False Heartwood
PublicationThis study examined the changes in the properties of beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) after intense drying. Beech wood with false red heartwood was selected as the test specimen. The test samples had dimensions of 50 mm thickness, 180 mm width, and 350 mm length. The specimens were divided into two groups, false red heartwood and sapwood. These specimens were selected with different angles of the growth rings (radial and tangential)....

Ultrasound-Assisted Dispersive Liquid-Liquid Microextraction Using Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) for Neutral Red Dye Spectrophotometric Determination
PublicationDeep eutectic solvents (DES), which have low toxicity and are low cost, biodegradable, and easily synthesized, were used for the extraction of neutral red (NR) dye before its spectrophotometric analysis. DES, containing choline chloride as a hydrogen bond acceptor and phenol as a hydrogen bond donor with a molar ratio of 1:2, was used for the extraction of NR dye from aqueous media. The possible interaction of different DESs with...
