Novel Nystatin A1 derivatives exhibiting low host cell toxicity and antifungal activity in an in vitro model of oral candidosis
PublikacjaOpportunistic oral infections caused by Candida albicans are frequent problems in immunocompromised patients. Management of such infections is limited due to the low number of antifungal drugs available, their relatively high toxicity and the emergence of antifungal resistance. Given these issues, our investigations have focused on novel derivatives of the antifungal antibiotic Nystatin A1, generated by modifications at the amino...

Insulin-like growth factor type 2 is better than insulin-like growth factor type 1 a survival marker in patients after acute decompensation of heart failure
PublikacjaIntroduction:A decreased IGF-1 has been found in heart failure (HF). There are no reports assessing IGF-2 in HF, although in vitro study has shown, that IGF-2 stimulates cardiomyocyte proliferation more than IGF-1. The study aim was to compare the IGF-1 and IGF-2 concentration depending on HF exacerbation and annual survival.Material and methods:Among 75 patients hospitalized...

Mechanisms of azole resistance among clinical isolates of Candida glabrata in Poland
PublikacjaCandida glabrata is currently ranked as the second most frequently isolated aetiological agent of human fungal infections, next only to Candida albicans. In comparison with C. albicans, C. glabrata shows lower susceptibility to azoles, the most common agents used in treatment of fungal infections. Interestingly, the mechanisms of resistance to azole agents in C. albicans have been much better investigated than those in C. glabrata....

Host and pathogen factors in Klebsiella pneumoniae upper urinary tract infections in renal transplant patients
PublikacjaPurpose . To analyse the role of virulence factors (VFs) and host in Klebsiella pneumoniae upper urinary tract infections (UTIs) in renal transplant (RTx) recipients. Methodology. Clinical and demographic data were registered prospectively. Phylogenetic background of K. pneumoniae isolates was analysed by PCR melting profiles (MP) and the following VFs genes: fimH-1, uge, kpn, ycfM, mrkD, rmpA, magA, hlyA, cnf-1, irp-1, irp-2,...

Transcriptional activity of epigenetic remodeling genes declines in keratinocytes after in vitro expansion
PublikacjaPURPOSE: In vitro expansion is an invaluable method to obtain keratinocytes in amounts necessary for effective transplantation therapies. In vitro cell culturing provokes questions concerning potential epigenetic alterations occurring in expanded cells in the context of usefulness for transplantation and safety. The purpose of this study was to investigate as to whether keratinocyte expansion is associated with changes in the activity...

Enhancing Renal Tumor Detection: Leveraging Artificial Neural Networks in Computed Tomography Analysis
PublikacjaRenal cell carcinoma is one of the most common cancers in Europe, with a total incidence rate of 18.4 cases per 100 000 population. There is currently significant overdiagnosis (11% to 30.9%) at times of planned surgery based on radiological studies. The purpose of this study was to create an artificial neural network (ANN) solution based on computed tomography (CT) images as an additional tool to improve the differentiation of...

Instrument detection and pose estimation with rigid part mixtures model in video-assisted surgeries
PublikacjaLocalizing instrument parts in video-assisted surgeries is an attractive and open computer vision problem. A working algorithm would immediately find applications in computer-aided interventions in the operating theater. Knowing the location of tool parts could help virtually augment visual faculty of surgeons, assess skills of novice surgeons, and increase autonomy of surgical robots. A surgical tool varies in appearance due to...

Cough influence on fascia-mesh system built for a hernia repair - an experimental research
PublikacjaAn experimental approach to identify stronger and weaker fixation schemes in laparoscopic ventral hernia repair is presented in the paper. Two types of implants, whose mechanical properties are significantly different and five kinds of connectors are considered. Physical models of operated hernia have been built using those materials and porcine abdominal tissue. The models have been subjected to dynamic impulse load, similar to...

Active Dynamic Thermography imaging of wound healing processes in cardio surgery
PublikacjaThe surgery is a branch of medicine, that is integrally connected to wounds. Despite using sterile tools and compliance with aseptic rolls, some of the surgery wounds become infected. In clinical practice there is a lack of cheap, objective methods and tools for quantitative definition and estimation of the surgery wound healing progress. This paper presents preliminary results of Active Dynamic Thermography (ADT) parametric imaging...

Tailoring the electrochemical degradation of iron protected with polypyrrole films for biodegradable cardiovascular stents
PublikacjaThe degradation of polypyrrole (PPy) coated iron is studied in phosphate buffer saline solution at 37 °C by odd random phase multisine electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (ORP-EIS). PPy is electropolymerized with anti-inflammatory salicylates incorporated in the film, as a drug release system. The modelling of EIS over time provides the quantitative description of the corrosion behaviour of the material. Thus, the reliable...
