Dilemmas of Identity in Contemporary Cities. The City of Gdansk as an Example
PublikacjaThe article is aimed to answer the question how, depending on the historical heritage, the collective memory, the physical space of the city and their images were shaped, through the politics of memory. All known cultures and languages distinguish the ‘self’ and the ‘other’, ‘us’ and ‘them’. Neither do we know cities which wish to differ in some particular way, although they can have numerous identities. Their multitude and diversity...

Network effects—do they matter for digital technologies diffusion?
PublikacjaPurpose The main research target of this paper is to capture the network effects using the case of mobile cellular telephony, identified in European telecommunication markets, and its determinants enhancing the process of digital technologies diffusion. Design/methodology/approach This research relies on panel and dynamic panel regression analysis. The empirical sample covers 30 European countries, and the period for the analysis...

Fixed point indices of iterates of a low-dimensional diffeomorphism at a fixed point which is an isolated invariant set
PublikacjaLet f be an R^n-diffeomorphism, where n = 2, 3, for which {0} is an isolated invariant set. We determine all possible forms of the sequences of fixed point indices of iterates of f at 0, {ind(f n, 0)}_n, confirming in R3 the conjecture of Ruiz del Portal and Salazar (J Differ Equ 249, 989–1013, 2010).

Architektura i układ przestrzenny portu gdyńskiego lat międzywojennych jako dziedzictwo kulturowe
PublikacjaW rozprawie podjęto przedstawienie dwóch głównych składowych krajobrazu kulturowego portu gdyńskiego - przestrzeni portowej jako zrealizowanej myśli planistycznej oraz zbudowanymi na terenie kompleksu obiektami architektonicznymi. Analiza zasobu w jego najistotniejszym - z punktu widzenia dziedzictwa kulturowego - podejściu historycznym okresu dwudziestolecia międzywojennego dowodzi znacznych, tkwiących w nim, wartości historycznych....

Revitalization of Residential Buildings Dating Back to the Late19th and Early 20th Century on the Example of “Willa Halina” in Sopot (Poland)
PublikacjaResidential buildings dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century constitute an important element of the urban composition of many European cities, often determining their overall spatial expression. These buildings often require revitalization and sometimes also reconstruction or extension. Such activities make it possible to restore historical buildings to their former glory, but also to create new architecture, inscribed...

Boundary conditions for non-residential buildings from the user’s perspective: literature review
PublikacjaBackground and objective: This paper aims to review the boundary conditions (B/C) in specific categories (energy, building use, and lighting) within non-residential buildings to pave the way to a better understanding of users’ requirements and needs of the built environment. For this paper, B/C are understood as unique preconditions, specific characteristics for use, determining specific features of buildings, enabling an accurate...

Interworking and Cross-layer Service Discovery Extensions for IEEEE802.11s Wireless Mesh Standard
PublikacjaWith the rapid popularization of mobile end-user electronic devices wireless network technologies begin to play a crucial role as networks access technologies. While classic point-to-multipoint wireless access systems, based on fixed infrastructure of base stations providing access to clients, remain the main most popular solution, an increasing attention is devoted to wireless mesh systems, where each connecting client can extend...

The literature review on boundary conditions of use for non-residential buildings. Educational buildings.
PublikacjaThis paper describes the results of qualitative and quantitative literature reviews on boundary conditions within educational buildings, emphasising the users' perspective. The studies were performed before and during the COVID-19 pandemic using Scopus, Taylor& Francis, and Web of Science databases. The boundary conditions are understood as special characteristics for use and or precondition, determining specific features of...

Analysis of IPv6 handovers in IEEE 802.16 environment
PublikacjaThe second generation of WiMAX solutions, based on IEEE 802.16-2005 standard, offers limited mobility support. Unfortunately, after quickly changing the point of attachment on the WiMAX data link layer (DLL), very slow and inefficient IPv6 reconfiguration takes place. Delays introduced by automatic configuration (DHCPv6 and IPv6 protocols) and Mobile IPv6 can easily diminish or even render useless all benefits gained using the...

Modernization of historic healthcare buildings
PublikacjaThe practice of transforming and adapting the existing healthcare facilities to meet the growing demands of modern medicine applies not only to buildings of historical value. Of course, one can set a time point from which hospitals, erected mostly with industrialized technologies, undergo upgrades for better or worse effect. Existing healthcare buildings or facilities, including historic ones, have to be refurbished and adapted...

Fixed point indices of iterated smooth maps in arbitrary dimension
PublikacjaWe give a complete description of possible sequences ofindices of iterations of f at an isolated fixed point, answering inaffirmative the Chow, Mallet-Paret and Yorke conjecture posed in[S.N. Chow, J. Mallet-Parret, J.A. Yorke, A periodic point index whichis a bifurcation invariant, in: Geometric Dynamics, Rio de Janeiro,1981, in: Lecture Notes in Math., vol. 1007, Springer, Berlin, 1983,pp. 109-131].

The mechanism of grouting action under the base of bored pile
PublikacjaThe grouting under the base of bored pile is carried out in order to reduce pile settlement and improve its bearing capacity. The principal aim of grouting is to introduce an initial force between the soil and the pile base. In non-cohesive soil, the grouting can also enlarge the pile base area and therefore improve the base resistance. The example of static load tests on instrumented bored piles installed with and without grouting...

Spatial Calibration of a Dual PTZ-Fixed Camera System for Tracking Moving Objects in Video
PublikacjaA dual camera setup is proposed, consisting of a fixed (stationary) camera and a pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera, employed in an automatic video surveillance system. The PTZ camera is zoomed in on a selected point in the fixed camera view and it may automatically track a moving object. For this purpose, two camera spatial calibration procedures are proposed. The PTZ camera is calibrated in relation to the fixed camera image, using interpolated...

Analysis of The Behavior of Foundations of Historical Buildings
PublikacjaThe article is devoted to the analysis of the behavior of the foundations of historic buildings. Some basic aspects of foundation engineering are discussed, with an emphasis placed on its development, applied techniques, and materials. Several different approaches and methods for the analysis of foundations of historical buildings are presented. A particular analysis has been focused on an example of a typical stone foundation...

PV installations and the safety of residential buildings
PublikacjaThe dynamic development of the photovoltaic industry entails threats that have a direct impact on the safety of residential buildings. Appropriate design of a PV installation can be a challenge due to the multifaceted nature of this issue. The designer should take into account issues related to the selection of electrical parameters of the installation, adapting lightning and surge protection in accordance...

Vibration testing in buildings and safety of their operation
PublikacjaThe paper presents the issue of vibrations in residential buildings located near roads. It describes the measurement methodology and criteria for assessing the impact of vibrations generated by passing trucks. The article specifies a method to establish the impact on the operation of the examined facilities and it promotes the idea of employing a Bayesian network to determine probabilistically the level of risk to single-family...

Visual Object Tracking System Employing Fixed and PTZ Cameras
PublikacjaThe paper presents a video monitoring system utilizing fixed and PTZ cameras for tracking of moving objects. First type of camera provides image for background modelling, being employed for foreground objects localization. Estimated objects locations are then utilised for steering of PTZ cameras when observing targeted objects with high close-ups. Objects are classified into several classes, then basic event detection is being...
