Pollutant deposition via dew in urban and rural environment, Cracow, Poland
PublikacjaThis study is a comparative analysis of dew in rural and urban environment. Dew samples were collected between May and October, 2009 in two reference stations in southern Poland: Cracow and Gaik-Brzezowa. The investigation included comparison of volume and chemistry of the collected samples. Due to its formation mechanisms, dew is a good indicator of air pollution. Following parameters were analyzed in 159 collected samples: pH,...

Analysis of antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli isolated from the Reda River and the Oliwski Stream using basic statistical methods = Zastosowanie metod ststystycznych do analizy antybiotykoodporności bakterii wskaźnikowych pochodzących z rzeki Redy i Potoku Oliwskiego
PublikacjaIn this study distribution of antimicrobial resistance patterns among fecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and Enterococcus spp.) was examined in two watercourses. The susceptibility analyses were carried out against the antimicrobial agents, important in treating human E. coli and enterococcal infection. Water samples were obtained from the Oliwski Stream and from the Reda River. On each watercourse the five representative...

Towards Computer-Aided Graphene Covered TiO2-Cu/(CuxOy) Composite Design for the Purpose of Photoinduced Hydrogen Evolution
PublikacjaIn search a hydrogen source, we synthesized TiO2-Cu-graphene composite photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution. The catalyst is a new and unique material as it consists of copper-decorated TiO2 particles covered tightly in graphene and obtained in a fluidized bed reactor. Both, reduction of copper from Cu(CH3COO) at the surface of TiO2 particles and covering of TiO2-Cu in graphene thin layer by Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) were...

Evolutionary benefits of personality traits when facing workplace bullying
PublikacjaFacing workplace bullying negatively affects physical and mental health, and consequently quality of life and well-being. Personality traits that can help an individual survive and reproduce entail more benefits than costs. Building on two evolutionary theories, Life History Theory and Costly Signaling Theory, this study aims to provide novel insights into how and why personality traits are associated with facing workplace bullying...

Utilizing Genome-Wide mRNA Profiling to Identify the Cytotoxic Chemotherapeutic Mechanism of Triazoloacridone C-1305 as Direct Microtubule Stabilization
PublikacjaRational drug design and in vitro pharmacology profiling constitute the gold standard in drug development pipelines. Problems arise, however, because this process is often dicult due to limited information regarding the complete identification of a molecule’s biological activities. The increasing aordability of genome-wide next-generation technologies now provides an excellent opportunity to understand a compound’s diverse eects...

The Possibility of Phase Change Materials (PCM) Usage to Increase Efficiency of the Photovoltaic Modules
PublikacjaSolar energy is widely available, free and inexhaustible. Furthermore this source of energy is the most friendly to the environment. For direct conversion of solar energy into useful forms like of electricity and thermal energy, respectively photovoltaic cells and solar collectors are being used. Forecast indicate that the first one solution will soon have a significant part in meeting the global energy demand. Therefore it is...

Human Factors in designing the Instrumentation and Control Systems Important to Safety
PublikacjaThis work addresses selected aspects of human factors in designing the instrumentation and control (I&C) systems important to safety as a part of the functional safety management of industrial hazardous plants, in particular nuclear power plants. As it is known in such plants a concept of “defence in depth” (D-in-D) is widely applied and some layers of protection are designed with regard to functional safety (FS) concept given...

Antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from cows with mastitis in the eastern Poland and analysis of susceptibility of resistant strains to alternative non-antibiotic agents: lysostaphin, nisin and polymyxin B.
PublikacjaThe aim of the studies was analysis of resistance of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from bovine mastitis in eastern part of Poland to a set of 20 antibiotics and three alternative agents: lysostaphin, nisin and polymyxin B. Eighty-six out of 123 examined isolates were susceptible to all of 20 tested antibiotics (70 %). The highest percentage of resistance was observed in the case of β-lactam antibiotics: amoxicillin (n=22, 17.9...

Modelling of the viscoelastic properties of the technical fabric VALMEX
PublikacjaThe analysis of the Burgers model used for the constitutive description of the technical fabric VALMEX vis-coelastic behavior is presented. It has revealed that the correctness of the identification depends strongly on the level of the immediate strain taken for calculations. Moreover, it has been proven that the Burgers model can be used for modelling of the viscoelastic properties of the polyester reinforced PVC coated VALMEX...

Nanostructure of the laser-modified transition metal nanocomposites for water splitting
PublikacjaAlthough hydrogen is considered by many to be the green fuel of the future, nowadays it is primarily produced through steam reforming, which is a process far from ecological. Therefore, emphasis is being put on the development of electrodes capable of the efficient production of hydrogen and oxygen from water. To make the green alternative possible, the solution should be cost-efficient and well processable, generating less waste...

Tyre/road noise reduction of poroelastic road surface tested in a laboratory
PublikacjaA so-called poroelastic road surface (PERS) is being developed in Europe. This contains a large percentage of rubber particles mixed with hard aggregate (stone and sand) and bound with polyurethane. This gives high air void content (around 30 %), high elasticity and smooth texture, all of which should give low noise properties. Inthis experiment anominally 30 mm thick sample of PERS was mounted on a steel drum. Various car tyres...

The extended version of restriction analysis approach for the examination of the ability of low-molecular-weight compounds to modify DNA in a cell-free system
PublikacjaOne of the primary requirements in toxicology is the assessment of ability of chemicals to induce DNA covalent modification. There are several well-established methods used for this purpose such as 32P-Postlabeling or HPLC-MS. However, all of these approaches have difficult to overcome limitations, which prevents their use in genotoxin screening. Here, we describe the simple protocol exploiting specificity of restriction enzymes...

Molecular hydrogen solvated in water – A computational study
PublikacjaThe aqueous hydrogen molecule is studied with molecular dynamics simulations at ambient temperature and pressure conditions, using a newly developed flexible and polarizable H2 molecule model. The design and implementation of this model, compatible with an existing flexible and polarizable force field for water, is presented in detail. The structure of the hydration layer suggests that first-shell water molecules accommodate the...

Concept of Compatibility Region for the Evaluation of IR UWB Electromagnetic Compatibility
PublikacjaThis paper presents a new proposal for the unified evaluation of ultra wideband and narrowband radio communication systems electromagnetic compatibility, called “compatibility region”. The idea of compatibility region is based on the relation between the ratio of narrowband to ultra wideband signal power in a receiver and some transmission quality indicators (bit error rate, effective data rate).
