A review of methods of blood supply to organs of the gastrointestinal tract. State of art
PublicationThe correct assessment of blood supply is essential to eliminate possible postoperative complications. Re-anastomosis of the gastrointestinal tract after its resection must be preceded by the analysis of blood supply to the anastomosed fragments. It is important that the blood supply assessment procedure is reliable but also non-absorbing and, if possible, short. It should also be possible to repeat the procedure due to the need...

QRS Morphology-Based EDR Signal—Factors Determining its Properties
PublicationRespiration-induced signals contain a clinically significant information. It could be obtained utilizing both direct and indirect methods. ECG-Derived Respiration (EDR) method is the latter one. However, in this case, two approaches could be distinguished. First one is based on determining changes in the morphology of QRS complexes while the second one is based on the Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia (RSA) mechanism. The former approach...

Non-Contact Monitoring of ECG in the Home Environment—Selecting Optimal Electrode Configuration
PublicationCapacitive electrocardiography (cECG) is most often used in wearable or embedded measurement systems. The latter is considered in the paper. An optimal electrocardiographic lead, as an individual feature, was determined based on model studies. It was defined as the possibly highest value of the R-wave amplitude measured on the back of the examined person. The lead configuration was also analyzed in terms of minimizing its susceptibility...

Influence of preprocessing techniques on pulse pressure velocity determination
PublicationPulse Wave Velocity (PWV) is measured and utilized in many clinical applications. Recently, a wide research has been led to develop a cuff-less and continuous blood pressure method basing on PWV. However, in this application a decision on choosing an appropriate fiducial point of pulse wave (PW) waveform is necessary and substantial. It would allow to measure time parameters necessary to determine PWV. An influence of sampling...

DETECTION OF BREATHING AND HEART RATE USING AN ECG SIGNAL MEASURED WHILE BATHING IN THE BATHTUB
PublicationNowadays a new area of interest is gaining importance - it is home biomedical examination. Intelligent home can be supported by set of devices for habitants observation. It can be particularly useful for elders or person with some health risks but living alone. One of critical locations within the house is bathroom. One of utilities in the bathroom is a bathtub which is sometimes preferred over shower. There are reports of problems...

Coupling between Blood Pressure and Subarachnoid Space Width Oscillations during Slow Breathing
PublicationThe precise mechanisms connecting the cardiovascular system and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are not well understood in detail. This paper investigates the couplings between the cardiac and respiratory components, as extracted from blood pressure (BP) signals and oscillations of the subarachnoid space width (SAS), collected during slow ventilation and ventilation against inspiration resistance. The experiment was performed on...

Optical sensor of a person sitting on a chair and dressed in multi-layered clothes vital signs monitoring
PublicationAn optoelectronic device enhancing a smart chair functionality is presented in the paper. Its essential purpose is a detection of a sitting person presence on the chair by means of detecting the vital signs. Additionally, it could be used for determining of clothes layer parameters useful in adjusting a system of a capacitive electrocardiography.

Neural network based algorithm for hand gesture detection in a low-cost microprocessor applications
PublicationIn this paper the simple architecture of neural network for hand gesture classification was presented. The network classifies the previously calculated parameters of EMG signals. The main goal of this project was to develop simple solution that is not computationally complex and can be implemented on microprocessors in low-cost 3D printed prosthetic arms. As the part of conducted research the data set EMG signals corresponding...

Design aspects of a low-cost prosthetic arm for people with severe movement disabilities
PublicationIn this paper the main aspects of mechanical design behind the low-cost prosthetic arm are presented. The fundamentals of a proper design has been defined to obtain functional 3D printed 5 degree of freedom (DOF) prosthesis. The designed prosthetic arm is a part of the hybrid interface with eye tracking movement control. The main focus was to create affordable but usable prosthesis which corresponds in size and weights to the human...

Blood Pressure - Pulse Transit Time Relationships: Comparative Studies
PublicationA non-invasive and continuous blood pressure estimation could allow a better diagnosis and an earlier detection of various diseases. It could be performed using a photoplethysmography. However, it requires that a relation between blood pressure and pulse transit time is known. Eleven theoretical formulas were used in obtaining the simulated and noise free synthetic data. Then, they were utilized in validation of three, commonly...

Using Eye-tracking to get information on the skills acquisition by the radiology residents
PublicationThis paper describes the possibility of monitoring the progress of knowledge and skills acquisition by the students of radiology. It is achieved by an analysis of a visual attention distribution patterns during image-based tasks solving. The concept is to use the eye-tracking data to recognize the way how the radiographic images are read by recognized experts, radiography residents involved in the training program, and untrained...

Systemy automatycznej detekcji bezdechu sennego

Optimal ECG lead for deriving respiratory signal
PublicationEDR is an interesting measuring technique that allows an indirect assessment of respiratory activity. This is an alternative solution to direct methods that are based on the measurement of air flow, which require a specialized sensor or even a system. However, due to inter-personal anatomical differences, the optimal ECG lead (placement of the electrodes) ensuring the best EDR signal quality is not fixed. An influence of ECG lead...

Impact of slow breathing on the blood pressure and subarachnoid space width oscillations in humans
PublicationThe aim of the study was to assess cardiac and respiratory blood pressure (BP) and subarachnoid space (SAS) width oscillations during the resting state for slow and fast breathing and breathing against inspiratory resistance. Experiments were performed on a group of 20 healthy volunteers (8 males and 12 females; age 25.3 ± 7.9 years; BMI = 22.1 ± 3.2 kg/m2). BP and heart rate (HR) were measured using continuous finger-pulse photoplethysmography....

Estimation of electrode contact in capacitive ECG measurement
PublicationIn the paper a method of electrode’s contact estimation in capacitive electrocardiogram (CECG) is presented. Proposed solution allows estimation of contact quality for each individual electrode. This enables construction of multi-electrode CECG systems, where electrode pairs can be selected on the basis of the individual electrode contact quality.
