The Scanning Electron Microscopy images of three arthropods
Open Research DataThe dataset contains micrographs of various arthropods made with the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) technique. The images were done during the laboratory with students from the Faculty of Chemistry. Among the studied species, there is a fruit fly (lat.Drosophila melanogaster), a spider (most likely Sibianor aurocinctus), and a weevil insect (Curculionoidea).

Numerical analysis of open channel steady gradually varied flow using the simplified saint-venant equations
PublicationFor one-dimensional open-channel flow modeling, the energy equation is usually used. There exist numerous approaches using the energy equation for open-channel flow computations, which resulted in the development of several very efficient methods for solving this problem applied to channel networks. However, the dynamic equation can be used for this purpose as well. This paper introduces a method for solving a system of non-linear...

A new cold-active β-galactosidase from Arthrobacter sp. S3* - gene cloning, overexpression, purification and properties
PublicationA psychrotrophic bacterium producing a cold-active β-galactosidase was isolated from Spitsbergen soil and classified as Arthrobacter sp. S3*. The gene encoding β-galactosidase was isolated from the genomic DNA library, sequenced, cloned, expressed in Escherichia coli, purified by ion exchange chromatography and characterized. The Arthrobaster sp. S3* β-galactosidase is a homotrimeric enzyme composed of 74,4 kDa subunits. It is...

Uwagi na marginesie artykułu Adama Moleckiego Rozwój autobusów elektrycznych w oparciu o istniejące sieci tramwajowe
PublicationW numerze 12/2014 niniejszego czasopisma został opublikowany artykuł Adama Moleckiego pt. "Rozwój autobusów elektrycznych w oparciu o istniejące sieci tramwajowe" [4]. Autor w swoich rozważaniach sformułował tezę o zasadności rozwijania elektrycznego transportu mieksjiego - autobusów elektrycznych - w opraciu o istniejącą infrastrukturę tramwajową lub trolejbusową. W niniejszym artykule, na tle rozważań teoretycznych, rozszerzono...

The cement-bone bond is weaker than cement-cement bond in cement-in-cement revision arthroplasty. A comparative biomechanical study
PublicationThis study compares the strength of the native bone-cement bond and the old-new cement bond under cyclic loading, using third generation cementing technique, rasping and contamination of the surface of the old cement with biological tissue. The possible advantages of additional drilling of the cement surface is also taken into account. Femoral heads from 21 patients who underwent a total hip arthroplasty performed for hip arthritis...

Comparative analysis of mechanical conditions in bone union following first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis with varied locking plate positions: A finite element analysis
PublicationFirst metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis is a typical medical treatment performed in cases of arthritis or joint deformity. The gold standard for this procedure is arthrodesis stabilisation with the dorsally positioned plate. However, according to the authors’ previous studies, medially positioned plate provides greater bending stiffness. It is worth to compare the mechanical conditions for bone formation in the fracture callus...

Ryzyko etyczne w procesie wytwarzania oprogramowania [online]

Borrowing Images of Empire. The contribution of research on the artistic influence of the Holy Roman Empire on Polish Romanesque architecture in the eleventh and twelfth centuries
PublicationAlthough knowledge concerning Romanesque architecture in Poland has developed over many years, most cathedrals and ducal or royal seats have not been comprehensively examined. Moreover, a substantial number of contemporary scholarly works have erased the thin line between material evidence and its interpretation. As a consequence, the architectural remains of Polish Romanesque edifices are often considered the basis for wider comparative...

Food analysis using artificial senses.
PublicationNowadays, consumers are paying great attention to the characteristics of food such as smell, taste, and appearance. This motivates scientists to imitate human senses using devices known as electronic senses. These include electronic noses, electronic tongues, and computer vision. Thanks to the utilization of various sensors and methods of signal analysis, artificial senses are widely applied in food analysis for process monitoring...

Artificial Intelligence Aided Architectural Design
PublicationTools and methods used by architects always had an impact on the way building were designed. With the change in design methods and new approaches towards creation process, they became more than ever before crucial elements of the creation process. The automation of architects work has started with computational functions that were introduced to traditional computer-aided design tools. Nowadays architects tend to use specified tools...

Analysis of an Attenuator Artifact in an Experimental Attack by Gunn–Allison–Abbott Against the Kirchhoff-Law–Johnson-Noise (KLJN) Secure Key Exchange System
PublicationA recent paper by Gunn–Allison–Abbott (GAA) [L. J. Gunn et al., Scientific Reports 4 (2014) 6461] argued that the Kirchhoff-law–Johnson-noise (KLJN) secure key exchange system could experience a severe information leak. Here we refute their results and demonstrate that GAA’s arguments ensue from a serious design flaw in their system. Specifically, an attenuator broke the single Kirchhoff-loop into two coupled loops, which is an...
