Chapter 20. Biodegradability of synthetic and mineral base oils

Micellar solubilization of mineral and synthetic oils in nonionic surfactant solutions
PublicationZbadano solubilizację micelarną olejów mineralnych i syntetycznych (PAO6) w wodnych roztworach surfaktantów niejonowych (oksyetylenowanych alkoholi tłuszczowych). Dodatek kosurfaktanta (alkoholu amylowego) powodował znaczny wzrost efektywności solubilizacji badanych olejów. Najwyższą efektywność solubilizacji uzyskano dla roztworów Rokanolu NL6 (50 g/dm3) z dodatkiem alkoholu amylowego (2-2.5%). Ze wzrostem liczby grup oksyetylenowych...

Synthetic strategies in construction of organic macromolecular carrier–drug conjugates
PublicationMany metabolic inhibitors, considered potential antimicrobial or anticancer drug candidates, exhibit verylimited ability to cross the biological membranes of target cells. The restricted cellular penetration ofthose molecules is often due to their highhydrophilicity. One of the possible solutions to this problem is aconjugation of an inhibitor with a molecular organic nanocarrier. The conjugate thus formed should beable to penetrate...

Wetting properties of biosurfactant (rhamnolipid) with synthetic surfactants mixtures in the context of soil remediation
PublicationWetting properties of synthetic surfactant Rokanol NL6, biosurfactant JBR 425 and their mixture have been investigated. The results show that synthetic surfactant addition worsens physicochemical properties of pure biosurfactant but exhibits much higher oil removal efficiency than biosurfactant does.

COMPLEXITY OF INNOVATIVE FINANCIAL PRODUCTS: THE CASE OF SYNTHETIC EXCHANGE TRADED FUNDS IN EUROPE
PublicationThe aim of the text is the presentation of the most important categories of exchange traded funds (ETFs) – physical and synthetic ones. A theoretical part of the text includes an overview of the main features of ETFs, the presentation of differences between physical and synthetic funds and the main risks posed by both types to their users and the whole financial systems. An empirical part focuses on the European market. Time span...

Complexes of silanethiolate ligands: Synthesis, structure, properties and application
PublicationThe purposeful syntheses of silanethiolate complexes started approximately in the mid-eighties of the 20th century but no summary of the synthetic efforts has been reported till now. The synthetic methods and the resulting complexes have some common features, which are emphasized throughout the review. Thereby specific difficulties during synthesis are outlined and the structures, properties and possible applications of the resulting...

Synthesis Methods and Favorable Conditions for Spherical Vaterite Precipitation: A Review
PublicationVaterite is the least thermodynamically stable anhydrous calcium carbonate polymorph. It exists very rare in nature, e.g. in some rock formations or as a component of biominerals produced by some fishes, crustaceans or birds. Synthetic vaterite particles are proposed as carriers of active substances in medicines, additive in cosmetic preparations as well as adsorbents. Also, their utilization as a pump for microfluidic flow is...

Hydrogen assisted cracking of 2205 duplex stainless steel in synthetic sea water
PublicationThe cracking behavior of 2205 duplex stainless steels (DSSs) in synthetic sea water under cathodic polarization condition was investigated. (SSRT) method was employed in aim to evaluate the susceptibility to hydrogen assisted cracking. The results showed that the reduction in the uniform elongation (UEL) and the reduction of area (RA) varied with the applied cathodic current density. Significant reductions in ductility were found,...

The influence of synthesis method on the microstructure and catalytic performance of Y 0.07 Sr 0.93 Ti 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3-δ in synthetic biogas operated solid oxide fuel cells
PublicationThe Y0.07Sr0.93Ti0.8Fe0.2O3-δ (YSTF) material was fabricated using three different synthesis methods: modified polymer precursor method (MPP), Pechini method and a solid state reaction method. It was applied as an anode catalytic material for biogas reforming in solid oxide fuel cells. Clear differences in the microstructure of fabricated catalytic layers were found, mainly with respect to a grain size and distribution of grains....

Synthetic strategies in construction of organic low molecular-weight carrier-drug conjugates
PublicationInefficient transportation of polar metabolic inhibitors through cell membranes of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells precludes their direct use as drug candidates in chemotherapy. One of the possible solutions to this problem is application of the ‘Trojan horse’ strategy, i.e. conjugation of an active substance with a molecular carrier of organic or inorganic nature, facilitating membrane penetration. In this work, the synthetic...

Proteolysis of whey protein isolates in nanoemulsion systems: impact of nanoemulsification and additional synthetic emulsifiers
PublicationNanoemulsions are currently of interest in the functional food sector because their small droplet size (100–500 nm) provides a number of potential advantages over conventional emulsions. This study concerned the behavior of nanoemulsions stabilized with whey proteins and two synthetic emulsifiers (Tween 80 and Croduret), and exposed to conditions simulating the human upper gastrointestinal tract. In particular, the effect of synthetic...

Potential of Functionalized Polyolefins in a Sustainable Polymer Economy: Synthetic Strategies and Applications
PublicationPolymers play a crucial role in our modern life as no other material exists that is so versatile, moldable, and lightweight. Consequently, the demand for polymers will continue to grow with the human population, modernization, and technological developments. However, depleted fossil resources, increasing plastic waste production, ocean pollution, and related growing emission of greenhouse gases has led to a change in the way we...
