Construction solutions for historical object foundations in the context of changing their functional use
PublicationProperly executed renovation and adaptation of a grade listed property not only ensures its constructional safety, but may also highlight the object’s historical value. Taking into consideration various factors, such as divergence of interests, or technical and legal determinants, it is safe to say that the renovation and adaptation of grade listed properties for new purposes is a complex process. The authors of the paper wish...

The reliability of any-hop star networks with respect to failures of communication nodes.
PublicationThis paper investigated the reliability of any-hop star networks. The any-hop star topology is used in centralized computer networks. We will assume that the all nodes fail independently, links are failure-free. Following measures of network reliability are assumed: the expected number of nodes, which can communicate with the central node; the expected number of node pairs, which are connected by a path through the central node;...

Asymptotic Expansion Method with Respect to Small Parameter for Ternary Diffusion Models
PublicationTernary diffusion models lead to strongly coupled systems of PDEs. We choose the smallest diffusion coefficient as a small parameter in a power series expansion whose components fulfill relatively simple equations. Although this series is divergent, one can use its finite sums to derive feasible numerical approximations, e.g. finite difference methods (FDMs).

Generation of random fields to reflect material and geometric imperfections of plates and shells
PublicationThe paper covers two patterns of random field generation: conditional acceptance – rejection method and Karhunen – Loève expansion. The generation of two-dimensional random fields is essential in plates and shells analysis, allowing for a relevant limit and critical state assessment of geometrically and ma-terially imperfect structures. The features of both generation methods dedicate them to selected problems.

Performance evaluation of the parallel object tracking algorithm employing the particle filter
PublicationAn algorithm based on particle filters is employed to track moving objects in video streams from fixed and non-fixed cameras. Particle weighting is based on color histograms computed in the iHLS color space. Particle computations are parallelized with CUDA framework. The algorithm was tested on various GPU devices: a desktop GPU card, a mobile chipset and two embedded GPU platforms. The processing speed depending on the number...

Designing effective educational games - a case study of a project management game
PublicationThis paper addresses the issues of designing effective educational games. We aim at investigating how the cognitive, behavioral and emotional aspects of the games influence their educational effectiveness. The results were obtained with an observational user experience study extended with affect analysis carried out for a project management game GraPM. We analyzed the...

Equitable coloring of graphs. Recent theoretical results and new practical algorithms
PublicationIn this paper we survey recent theoretical results concerning conditions for equitable colorability of some graphs and recent theoretical results concerning the complexity of equitable coloring problem. Next, since the general coloring problem is strongly NP-hard, we report on practical experiments with some efficient polynomial-time algorithms for approximate equitable coloring of general graphs.

Hybrid Fuzzy-Ontological Project Framework of a Team Work Simulation System
PublicationThe aim of this article is to present the project framework for constructing a Software Process Simulation Modeling (SPSM) system. SPSM systems can be used as a virtual environment for the selection of methods and tools of project management in IT support organizations. The constructed system simulates the Scrum methodology, including the management processes and the project roles. For the implementation of Scrum processes, the...

Recent advances in assessing xenobiotics migrating from packaging material – A review
PublicationMigration of potentially toxic xenobiotics and their transformation products from packaging materials needs continuous monitoring efforts. This task requires utilizing both instrumental and biological methods as more and more novel materials reach market every year to serve consumers and reduce production costs. Unfortunately, these materials very often sneak past our legal regulations on their composition and emission of contaminants...

Hard Lessons Learned: A Model that Facilitates the Selection of Methods of IT Project Management
PublicationThe article presents the results of research conducted in an international enterprise responsible for IT project implementation. The carried out analysis of the case study with the use of surveys and data synthesis allowed the major factors causing problems connected with project management to be identified. The identified factors were aggregated and then, by using four key variables, a rhomboidal model adaptation was proposed...

Recent Advances in Performance-Driven Surrogate Modeling of High-Frequency Structures
PublicationDesign of high‐frequency structures, including microwave and antenna components, heavily relies on full‐wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation models. Their reliability comes at a price of a considerable computational cost. This may lead to practical issues whenever numerous EM analyses are to be executed, e.g., in the case of parametric optimization. The difficulties entailed by massive simulations may be mitigated by the use of...

Exploring Impact of Requirements Engineering on Other IT Project Areas – Case Study
PublicationRequirements Engineering (RE) is recognized as one of the most important (yet difficult) areas of software engineering that has a significant impact on other areas of IT projects and their final outcomes. Empirical studies investigating this impact are hard to conduct, mainly due to the great effort required. It is thus difficult for both researchers and industry practitioners to make evidence-based evaluations about how decisions...

Effect of elliptical defect orientation on the durability of specimens subjected to cyclic bending
PublicationThis work presents the effect of elliptical defects orientation on the durability of specimens made of C45 steel. Three kinds of specimens with elliptical defects in the form of a one-sided notch oriented at different angles 45, 60, and 90 degrees were subjected to cyclic bending (R=-1). The stress state analysis was performed using local and non-local methods to determine an equivalent amplitude of stress, and then the results...

Recent advances in hydrodynamic cavitation-based pretreatments of lignocellulosic biomass for valorization
PublicationRecently, the hydrodynamic cavitation (HC)-based pretreatment has shown high effectiveness in laboratories and even in industrial productions for conversion of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) into value-added products. The pretreatment capability derives from the extraordinary conditions of pressures at ∼500 bar, local hotspots with ∼5000 K, and oxidation (hydroxyl radicals) created by HC at room conditions. To promote this emerging...

Reduced-Cost Constrained Modeling of Microwave and Antenna Components: Recent Advances
PublicationElectromagnetic (EM) simulation models are ubiquitous in the design of microwave and antenna components. EM analysis is reliable but CPU intensive. In particular, multiple simulations entailed by parametric optimization or uncertainty quantification may considerably slow down the design processes. In order to address this problem, it is possible to employ fast metamodels. Here, the popular solution approaches are approximation...
