How can Systems Thinking Help Us Handling the COVID-19 Crisis?
PublicationPurpose: COVID-19 pandemic outbreak remains one of the most influential events in the global economy over the recent years. While being primarily public health-related, it has a tremendous impact on many other aspects, such as public transport, education, and business management. Many businesses were forced to introduce rapid changes to their business models in order to survive. The aim of this paper is to show the complexity and...

User -friendly E-learning Platform: a Case Study of a Design Thinking Approach Use
PublicationE-learning systems are very popular means to support the teaching process today. These systems are mainly used by universities as well as by commercial training centres. We analysed several popular e-learning platforms used in Polish universities and find them very unfriendly for the users. For this reason, the authors began the work on the creation of a new system that would be not only useful, but also usable for students, teachers...

Source-related Wavefields in Fluids and Dielectrics: A new way of Thinking about Medium Dynamics
PublicationAcoustic and electromagnetic wave phenomena may seem to have a proper formal representation in field theory dating from the 19th century, founded on the mathematics of complex functions. This paper shows, however, that when replacing the classical spectrum-domain approach related to the assumption of harmonic timeform of signals, with a time-domain approach imposingnorestrictionastotheclassoftimeevolutionofsourceandfieldsignals,...

Acoustic Heating Produced in the Thermoviscous Flow of a Shear-Thinning Fluid
PublicationThis study is devoted to the instantaneous acoustic heating of a shear-thinningfluid. Apparent viscosity of a shear-thinning fluid depends on the shear rate. Thatfeature distinguishes it from a viscous Newtonian fluid. The special linear combi-nation of conservation equations in the differential form makes it possible to derivedynamic equations governing both the sound and non-wave entropy mode inducedin the field of sound. These...

Design thinking qualifications framework – standardizing the innovative approach to entrepreneurial education delivery to engineering students
PublicationHighly competitive labor market stimulates increasing expectations towards fresh university alumni. It is not enough to be an expert - well educated and often experienced - in chosen discipline. High variability of the business environment, continuous change, number of risks, together with higher work demand than supply, shape clear employers’ expectations: entrepreneurial employees are wanted. On this ground a need for entrepreneurial...

Linking music data in executable documents
PublicationThis paper presents the application of Interactive Open Document Architecture (IODA) to music and video data. This architecture was design to create multilayer documents which consist of many files. The paper shows the method of creating media documents on the basis of IODA. These kind of documents were called IODA Media Documents (IMD). IMD have links that connect many different kinds of files containing music and video data....

Non-places in the centre of the historic Main Town in Gdansk? – Design Thinking as a method of solving problems in cities
PublicationThe interiors of reconstructed extensive blocks of the historic Main Town in Gdansk are nowadays degraded areas, full of cars, with “holes” after never-finished archaeological excavations. It is not surprising that inhabitants avoid them. These are NON-PLACES. This situation prompts social movements to act. The first step towards the change was the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary project of revitalization of one of the...

Light4Health eLearning Course: health research for interior lighting design. Re-thinking design approaches based on science
PublicationThis paper presents the results of 'Light4Health' (L4H), a three-year EU Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership grant project (2019-2021), which investigated, systematized and taught health-related research on the impact of natural and artificial light on human health and well-being relevant to indoor lighting design. The objective was to re-think evidence-based lighting design approaches for residential, working/educational, and healthcare...

total number and biomass of bacteria in drinking water distribution systems.
PublicationIn the vast water supply network using traditional methods of treatment it is often impossible to maintain a constant and acceptable microbiological quality of water. In Poland the main reason of bacterial re-growth is presence of organic matter and nutrients in the circulating water and prolonged water retention in the network systems due to the decrease of water consumption, which has been observed for the last 20 years. In the...

Rethinking non-governmental organizations – at the crossroad of economics and civil society
PublicationThe article aims to close the existing knowledge gaps, show why non‑governmental organizations are founded and maintained, and elaborate and systematize the existing knowledge through an analysis of the existing subdisciplines within economics, laying the groundwork for the economics of non‑governmental organizations. The article was written based on a structured literature review with an approach similar to the grounded theory...

Robust Monitoring of Water Quality in Drinking Water Distribution System
PublicationThe paper develops a novel open loop set bounded observer for robust estimation of water quality in DWDS based on the advanced nonlinear quality dynamics model including disinfections by-products (DBPs). The observer utilises a cooperativeness of the quality dynamics model and is computationally efficient, hence applicable to on-line quality monitoring. The simulation results illustrate its good and sustainable performance.

Shrinking-shifting and amplifying-shifting device using transformation optics
PublicationBased on transformation optics (TO), this paper uses geometric divisions and linear coordinate transformations to design “shrinking-shifting—and reshaping”, and “amplifying-shifting—and reshaping” devices. The proposed devices can reshape the sizes and locations of the wrapped-objects inside the core-region. The shrinking-shifting device shrinks the larger object into a smaller one and shifts it to different location, whereas the...

Leakage detection and localisation in drinking water distributionnetworks by MultiRegional PCA
PublicationMonitoring is one of the most important steps in advanced control of complex dynamic systems. Precise information about systems behaviour, including faults indicating, enables for efficient control. The paper describes an approach to detection and localisation of pipe leakage in Drinking Water Distribution Systems (DWDS) representing complex and distributed dynamic system of large scale. Proposed MultiRegional Principal Component...

Linking Fashion and Tourism: From Body to Clothing and Lifestyle
PublicationThere are many profound links between fashion and tourism. This chapter provides a critical reflection, mainly from a philosophical, historical, and linguistic perspective, on the dynamic relationship and parallel evolution between these two sectors. It explains how their intercon nectedness form and mirror contemporary society. This chapter classifies the connections between the two, starting with the person, her body, and the...

Generalized Dold sequences on partially-ordered sets
PublicationDold sequences constitute an important class of integer sequences that play an important role in combinatorics, number theory, topology and dynamical systems. We generalize the notion of Dold sequence for the case of partially ordered sets and describe their properties. In particular we give two alternative descriptions of generalized Dold sequences: by some class of elementary sequences as well as by different...
