Graph Decomposition for Memoryless Periodic Exploration
PublicationWe consider a general framework in which a memoryless robot periodically explores all the nodes of a connected anonymous graph by following local information available at each vertex. For each vertex v, the endpoints of all edges adjacent to v are assigned unique labels within the range 1 to deg (v) (the degree of v). The generic exploration strategy is implemented using a right-hand-rule transition function: after entering vertex...

Coronas and Domination Subdivision Number of a Graph
PublicationIn this paper, for a graph G and a family of partitions P of vertex neighborhoods of G, we define the general corona G ◦P of G. Among several properties of this new operation, we focus on application general coronas to a new kind of characterization of trees with the domination subdivision number equal to 3.

Distributed graph searching with a sense of direction
PublicationIn this work we consider the edge searching problem for vertex-weighted graphs with arbitrarily fast and invisible fugitive. The weight function w provides for each vertex v the minimum number of searchers required to guard v, i.e., the fugitive may not pass through v without being detected only if at least w(v) searchers are present at v. This problem is a generalization of the classical edge searching problem, in which one has...

TOTAL DOMINATION MULTISUBDIVISION NUMBER OF A GRAPH
PublicationThe domination multisubdivision number of a nonempty graph G was defined in [3] as the minimum positive integer k such that there exists an edge which must be subdivided k times to increase the domination number of G. Similarly we define the total domination multisubdivision number msd_t (G) of a graph G and we show that for any connected graph G of order at least two, msd_t (G) ≤ 3. We show that for trees the total domination...

The convex domination subdivision number of a graph
PublicationLet G = (V;E) be a simple graph. A set D\subset V is a dominating set of G if every vertex in V - D has at least one neighbor in D. The distance d_G(u, v) between two vertices u and v is the length of a shortest (u, v)-path in G. An (u, v)-path of length d_G(u; v) is called an (u, v)-geodesic. A set X\subset V is convex in G if vertices from all (a, b)-geodesics belong to X for any two vertices a, b \in X. A set X is a convex dominating...

A construction for the hat problem on a directed graph
PublicationA team of n players plays the following game. After a strategy session, each player is randomly fitted with a blue or red hat. Then, without further communication, everybody can try to guess simultaneously his own hat color by looking at the hat colors of the other players. Visibility is defined by a directed graph; that is, vertices correspond to players, and a player can see each player to whom he is connected by an arc. The...

Non-monotone graph searching models
PublicationGraph searching encompasses a variety of different models, many of which share a property that in optimal strategies fugitive can never access once searched regions. Monotonicity, as it is called, is vital in many established results in the field however its absence significantly impedes the analysis of a given problem. This survey attempts to gather non-monotone models, that are less researched in effort of summarizing the results...

Derandomizing random walks in undirected graphs using locally fair exploration strategies

Equitable and semi-equitable coloring of cubic graphs and its application in batch scheduling
PublicationIn the paper we consider the problems of equitable and semi-equitable coloring of vertices of cubic graphs. We show that in contrast to the equitable coloring, which is easy, the problem of semi-equitable coloring is NP- complete within a broad spectrum of graph parameters. This affects the complexity of batch scheduling of unit-length jobs with cubic incompatibility graph on three uniform processors to minimize...

A note on fast approximate backbone coloring of split graphs with star--like backbones

How to meet when you forget: log-space rendezvous in arbitrary graphs
PublicationTwo identical (anonymous) mobile agents start from arbitrary nodes in an a priori unknown graph and move synchronously from node to node with the goal of meeting. This rendezvous problem has been thoroughly studied, both for anonymous and for labeled agents, along with another basic task, that of exploring graphs by mobile agents. The rendezvous problem is known to be not easier than graph exploration. A well-known recent result...

Eqiuitable coloring of corona products of cubic graphs is harder than ordinary coloring
PublicationA graph is equitably k-colorable if its vertices can be partitioned into k independent sets in such a way that the number of vertices in any two sets differ by at most one. The smallest k for which such a coloring exists is known as the equitable chromatic number of G. In this paper the problem of determinig the equitable coloring number for coronas of cubic graphs is studied. Although the problem of ordinary coloring of coronas...

Scheduling of unit-length jobs with bipartite incompatibility graphs on four uniform machines
PublicationThe problem of scheduling n identical jobs on 4 uniform machines with speeds s1>=s2>=s3>=s4 is considered. The aim is to find a schedule with minimum possible length. We assume that jobs are subject to mutual exclusion constraints modeled by a bipartite incompatibility graph of degree delta. We show that the general problem is NP-hard even if s1=s2=s3. If, however, delta<5 and s1>12s2 s2=s3=s4, then the problem can be solved to...

Scheduling of identical jobs with bipartite incompatibility graphs on uniform machines. Computational experiments
PublicationWe consider the problem of scheduling unit-length jobs on three or four uniform parallel machines to minimize the schedule length or total completion time. We assume that the jobs are subject to some types of mutual exclusion constraints, modeled by a bipartite graph of a bounded degree. The edges of the graph correspond to the pairs of jobs that cannot be processed on the same machine. Although the problem is generally NP-hard,...

Scheduling of unit-length jobs with cubic incompatibility graphs on three uniform machines
PublicationWe consider the problem of scheduling n identical jobs on 3 uniform machines with speeds s1, s2, and s3 to minimize the schedule length. We assume that jobs are subject to some kind of mutual exclusion constraints, modeled by a cubic incompatibility graph. We how that if the graph is 2-chromatic then the problem can be solved in O(n^2) time. If the graph is 3-chromatic, the problem becomes NP-hard even if s1>s2=s3.

The computational complexity of the backbone coloring problem for bounded-degree graphs with connected backbones
PublicationGiven a graph G, a spanning subgraph H of G and an integer λ>=2, a λ-backbone coloring of G with backbone H is a vertex coloring of G using colors 1, 2, ..., in which the color difference between vertices adjacent in H is greater than or equal to lambda. The backbone coloring problem is to find such a coloring with maximum color that does not exceed a given limit k. In this paper, we study the backbone coloring problem for bounded-degree...

Characterizing the Performance of <span class="sc">xor</span> Games and the Shannon Capacity of Graphs
PublicationIn this Letter we give a set of necessary and sufficient conditions such that quantum players of a two-party xor game cannot perform any better than classical players. With any such game, we associate a graph and examine its zero-error communication capacity. This allows us to specify a broad new class of graphs for which the Shannon capacity can be calculated. The conditions also enable the parametrization of new families of games...

Graph decomposition for improving memoryless periodic exploration
W niniejszej pracy poprawiamy to ograniczenie do 4n-2, stosując całkowicie nową technikę dekompozycji grafu.

Application of genetic algorithms in graph searching problem
PublicationGraph searching is a common approach to solving a problem of capturing a hostile intruder by a group of mobile agents. We assume that this task is performed in environment which we are able to model as a graph G. The question asked is how many agents are needed to capture an arbitrary fast, invisible and smart intruder. This number is called the (edge) search number of G. The strategy which must be performed by agents is called...

Zero-Visibility Cops and Robber Game on a Graph
PublicationWe examine the zero-visibility cops and robber graph searching model, which differs from the classical cops & robber game in one way: the robber is invisible. We show that this model is not monotonic. We also provide bounds on both the zero-visibility copnumber and monotonic zero-visibility copnumber in terms of the pathwidth.

Zero-visibility cops and robber and the pathwidth of a graph
PublicationWe examine the zero-visibility cops and robber graph searching model, which differs from the classical cops and robber game in one way: the robber is invisible. We show that this model is not monotonic. We show that the zero-visibility copnumber of a graph is bounded above by its pathwidth and cannot be bounded below by any nontrivial function of the pathwidth. As well, we define a monotonic version of this game and show that the...

Optimal edge-coloring with edge rate constraints
PublicationWe consider the problem of covering the edges of a graph by a sequence of matchings subject to the constraint that each edge e appears in at least a given fraction r(e) of the matchings. Although it can be determined in polynomial time whether such a sequence of matchings exists or not [Grötschel et al., Combinatorica (1981), 169–197], we show that several questions about the length of the sequence are computationally intractable....
