Experimental investigation on straight and u-bend double tube heat exchanger with active and passive enhancement methods
PublikacjaAuthors in this work want to demonstrate the possibility to increase the heat transfer efficiency by using simple wire coil inserts to create turbulent flow in the boundary layer as well as air blowing into the annulus of the pipe. In the study, Wilson plot approach was applied in order to estimate heat transfer coefficients for all heat exchanger (HX) configurations. The study focuses on experimental values of heat transfer coefficient...

Discrete-continuous optimisation of an axial flow blood pump
PublikacjaThis paper presents results of discrete-continuous optimisation of an axial flow blood pump. Evolution Strategies (ES) are used as a global optimisation method in order to localise the optimal solution in relatively short time. The whole optimisation process is fully automated. This also applies to geometry modelling. Numerical simulations of the flow inside the pump is performed by means of the Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes...

Effect of Simultaneous Valve Closures in Hydraulic Piping Systems
PublikacjaThe paper investigates wave interference (between pressure waves) occurring in simple hydraulic systems. Water hammer was induced by simultaneous closure of three valves located at the reservoirs of a “Y” type hydraulic system. Numerical simulations were carried out with the help of the freeware computer package Allievi enabling the reader to replicate results in a direct manner. The influence of the following quantities has been...

Torque Transmitted by Multi-plate Wet Clutches in Relation to Number of Friction Plates and Their Dimensions
PublikacjaIn the paper results of experimental tests on multi-plate wet clutch torque capacity for various diameters and numbers of friction plates are presented. Construction of an apparatus for laboratory tests of wet clutch engagement, drag torque and maximum torque is shown. Methodology of maximum torque capacity experiment and hydraulic circuit diagram, which supplies a motor and an actuator for the experiment are described. Analytically...

Modelling of elastic wave propagation in a bolted joint using a thin layer of shell elements
PublikacjaThere are many mathematical models describing the propagation of elastic waves through the imperfect boundary of two media. They were successfully applied to modelling of high frequency bulk waves and their interaction with local defects. On the other hand, the existing literature models of bolted connections ignore the aspect of imperfect connection between elements. Therefore, this paper presents the concept of application of...

Performance of a plate heat exchanger operated with water-Al2O3 nanofluid
PublikacjaThis study is focused on experimental investigation of a selected type of brazed plate heat exchanger (PHEx). The main aim of the paper was to experimentally check the ability of nanofluids to enhance the performance of PHEx. A typical water-Al2O3 nanofluid was tested and compared to that of the base fluid, i.e. water. Nanoparticles were tested at the concentration of 0.1% and 1% by weight. Impact of the 1 day and 3 days break...

An Impact of Environmental Disturbances on Combined Cycle Power Plant Control
PublikacjaCombined cycle power plants operate at thermal efficiency approaching 60 percent. In the same time their performance presents several problems that have to be addressed. E.g. gas turbines are very sensitive to backpressure exerted on them by the heat recovery steam generators as well as to ambient pressure and temperature.

Numerical solutions for blood flow in elastic vessels
PublikacjaWe consider the differential–algebraic system for the blood flow and pressure in the systemic arteries. By the operator splitting method, we transform the system into the hyperbolic one, introduce the bicharacteristics, and perform the time–space nonuniform discretization, obtaining the innovative difference scheme. Our results are illustrated with numerical experiments.

Validation of Hydraulic Mechanism during Blowout Trauma of Human Orbit Depending on the Method of Load Application
PublikacjaThe more we know about mechanisms of the human orbital blowout type of trauma, the better we will be able to prevent them in the future. As long as the buckling mechanism’s veracity is not in doubt, the hydraulic mechanism is not based on equally strong premises. To investigate the correctness of the hydraulic mechanism’s theory, two different methods of implementation of the hydraulic load to the finite element method (FEM) model...
