Colloidal transport of lipid digesta in human and porcine small intestinal mucus
PublicationSmall intestinal mucus transport of food-derived particulates has not been extensively studied, despite mucus being a barrier nutrients need to cross before absorption. We used complex dispersions of digesta obtained from simulated, dynamic gastrointestinal digestion of yogurt to examine the penetrability of human and porcine mucus to the particles formed of lipolysis products. Quantitative, time-lapse confocal microscopy revealed...

Space and spatial practices in times of confinement. Evidence from three European countries: Austria, France and Poland
PublicationIn the first half of 2020, millions of people were subjected to drastic restrictions aimed at limiting the spread of the Covid-19 disease. Austria, France and Poland have implemented a lockdown to varying degrees and for varying lengths of time. This is an unprecedented situation in Europe: until now, even in times of war, curfew measures have never been applied 24 h a day. The research presented in this article was carried out...

Consequences of russia’s military invasion of Ukraine for Polish-Ukrainian trade relations
PublicationAn accurate forecast of interstate trade volume allows for short-term and long-term planning, particularly deciding on state budget revenues, foreign exchange earnings, border arrangement, other infrastructure, migration and social policies. Hostilities are destructive so the russian military aggression against Ukraine in 2022 needs to be assessed in terms of its effects on key economic aspects of Polish-Ukrainian relations, as...

Fatigue life prediction of notched components under size effect using strain energy reformulated critical distance theory
PublicationNotch and size effects show significant impact on the fatigue performance of engineering components, which deserves special attention. In this work, a strain energy reformulated critical distance theory was developed for fatigue life prediction of notched components under size effect. Experimental data of different notched specimens manufactured from GH4169, TC4, TC11 alloys and low carbon steel En3B were used for model validation...

Artificial Neural Network based fatigue life assessment of riveted joints in AA2024 aluminum alloy plates and optimization of riveted joints parameters
PublicationThe objective of this paper is to provide the fatigue life of riveted joints in AA2024 aluminum alloy plates and optimization of riveted joints parameters. At first, the fatigue life of the riveted joints in AA2024 aluminum alloy plates is obtained by experimental tests. Then, an artificial neural network is applied to estimate the fatigue life of riveted lap joints based on the number of lateral and longitudinal holes, punch pressure,...

Fracture evolution in concrete compressive fatigue experiments based on X-ray micro-CT images
PublicationArtykuł omawia ewolucje pękania w betonie podczas cyklicznego ściskania betonu. Przestrzenną ewolucję pękania zobrazowano stosując mikro-tomograf rentgenowski. Zdjęcia wykonano dla różnych cykli zmęczeniowych. Wyniki porównano z testami monotonicznymi. Jakościowa ewolucja objętości pękania ze wzrostem zmęczeniowego zniszczenia pokazała silnie nieliniowy kształt.

ARCHITECTURE IN BRANDING AND OVERBRANDING PROCESS. HOW GLOBALIZATION INFLUENCED ARCHITECTURE QUALITY.
PublicationGlobalization is unification. In the field of architecture and in the social structure alike, the globalization leads to a blending of economies and cultures that produces uniformly branded public space as a response to universal assumptions of integration and correlation. While branding consists in creating a recognizable and outstanding image a strong contradiction exists between both of these approaches. As a result, regional...

NUTRITIONAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS IN TROPICAL FRUITS
PublicationDuring the past two decades our international scientific group investigated in vitro the physicochemical and nutritional characteristics of some cultivars of durian at various stages of ripening, mangosteen and new cultivars of snake fruit in comparison with widely used avocado, kiwifruit and mango, and in vivo their influence on laboratory animals. The main objective of the present study was to screen and compare the properties...

Przyszłość energetyki jądrowej na świecie
PublicationProblemy dostępności paliwa jądrowego i składowania odpadów radioaktywnych skłaniają do przemian w technologii reaktorów jądrowych w kierunku generacji IV. Równolegle obserwuje się rozwój reaktorów małej i średniej mocy. Obie ścieżki wydają się być słuszne i obiecujące. W przypadku małych reaktorów jądrowych, pierwsze instalacje mogą powstać w najbliższych pięciu latach, niektóre z nich mogą zaliczać się do reaktorów IV generacji....

Knowledge Risk Management in Organizations
PublicationPurpose – Shorter product life cycles, greater demands from consumers for sustainable and eco-friendly products and services, and thus the need for constant market observation make today’s business environment a rather complex one, the one that is characterized not only by a number of opportunities but also by a number of risks. These risks are increasingly related to knowledge which, in turn, underlines the need for an updated...

Chemical characterization of wild populations of Brassica oleracea complex species (n=9) for the content of their bioactive compounds
PublicationThe wild species belonging to Brassica oleracea complex species (n=9) are widespread in the Mediterranean basin and represent the relative species of several vegetable crops, such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, cabbage. They are characterized by the high level of bioactive compounds, such as glucosinolates (GLSs), known for their benefits for human health. Four accessions were evaluated: B. macrocarpa (BM) from Favignana (Trapani),...

Diving boldly into COVID‐19 contaminated wastewater: Eyes at nanotechnology‐assisted solutions
PublicationSeveral studies have been directed to find scalable, swift, accurate, and cost-effective strategies for detecting, monitoring, and treating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Indeed, the lack of a fast and practical method for detecting the infected regions makes decision-making challenging to combat the critical pandemic-struck situations. The probable ‘wrong’, or rather inadequate, decisions not only have a boomerang effect...

GVC and wage dispersion. Firm-level evidence from employee-employer database
PublicationResearch background: Wage inequalities are still part of an interesting policy-oriented research area. Given the developments in international trade models (heterogeneity of firms) and increasing availability of micro-level data, more and more attention is paid to wage differences observed within and be-tween firms. Purpose of the article: The aim of the paper is to address the research gap concerning limited cross-country evidence...
