On the compression of multibeam sonar raw bathymetry data
PublikacjaMultibeam sonars are widely used in applications like high resolution bathymetry measurements or underwater object imaging. One of the significant problems in multibeam sensing of the marine environment is large amount of data which must be transmitted from the sonar processing unit to an operator station using a limited bit rate channel. For instance, such a situation would be in the case when the multibeam sonar was mounted on...

Geotechnical characterization of soft soil deposits in Northern Poland
PublikacjaThis paper presents a geotechnical characterization of deltaic soft soil deposits in the Vistula Marshlands, northern Poland. It shows the limited applicability of organic soil classifications based on Cone Penetration Tests (CPTU) and Dilatometer Tests (DMT). None of the in-situ-based classifications correctly identifies peat. Analysis of the behaviour of contractive/dilative soil layers according to Robertson's updated classification...

Isothermal Calorimetry and Compressive Strength Tests of Mortar Specimens for Determination of Apparent Activation Energy
PublikacjaThe hydration process of cementitious materials involves a thermally activated reaction that depends on the composition of the mixture and the curing temperature. The main parameter affecting the temperature variation of cast-in-place concrete is the apparent activation energy, which can be used for the efficient prediction of the temperature evolution and maturity index of hardening concrete. This paper discusses two methods to...

Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of Two-Stage Concrete and Conventional Concrete Using Nondestructive Tests
PublikacjaDifferent types of concrete mixtures are used as building materials. The manufacturing process of two-stage concrete (TSC) differs from that of conventional concrete. This study investigated conventional mechanical properties derive empirical relations for estimation of the mechanical parameters of TSC and conventional concrete mixtures. TSC was used to prepare 216 specimens and conventional concrete was used to prepare 108 specimens...

Numerical simulation of laminate composite specimens failure
PublikacjaThis work presents some numerical results concerning simulation of failure of laminate composite specimens. In the article two tests to determine ultimate strength in an orthotropic layer, are considered: tension (TT1) and compression (TC1) test. The outcome is compared with experimental data provided by [9,10].

Discrete element method simulations of fracture in concrete under uniaxial compression based on its real internal structure
PublikacjaThe paper describes experimental and numerical results of concrete fracture under quasi-static uniaxial compression. Experimental uniaxial compression tests were performed on concrete cubic specimens. Fracture in concrete was detected at the aggregate level by means of three non-destructive methods: three-dimensional X-ray microcomputed tomography, two-dimensional scanning electron microscope and manual two-dimensional digital...

Experimental and numerical evaluation of mechanical behaviour of composite structural insulated wall panels under edgewise compression
PublikacjaA composite structural insulated sandwich panel (CSIP) is a quite novel approach to the idea of sandwich structures. A series of natural-scale experimental test is required each time a change in panel’s geometry is planned and a reliable computational tool is required to precede actual laboratory testing with virtual simulations. An attempt of creating such a tool has been made with use of a commercial FEM code ABAQUS, in order...

The effect of preliminary creep-strain on material behavior under LCF tension/compression and pure torsion regimes
PublikacjaThis paper presents the results of experimental tests of monotonic tension and torsion, creep-rupture and preliminary creep at 200C and 300C, as well as low-cycle fatigue of 2024 T3511 aluminum alloy. The fatigue process was conducted at room temperature for uniaxial tension/compression and torsion. The as-received material and pre-deformed material were also investigated during creep at elevated temperature. Basic monotonic,...

Some geomechanical properties of a biopolymer treated medium sand
PublikacjaSome geomechanical properties of a biopolymer treated medium sand. This paper presents a laboratory assessment of geomechanical properties of sandy soil improved by biopolymer application. Additives (biosubstance) consist of polysaccharides and water. Biosubstance used in the project was xanthan gum, which comes from bacteria Xanthomonas campestris. Triaxial shear compression tests and unconfi ned compression tests were carried...

The concept of research on ecological, energy and reliability effects of modified marine fuel oils application to supply compression-ignition engines in real conditions
PublikacjaWithin the article, basic assumptions of the research project financed by Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water in Gdansk were described. The project concerns the experimental investigations carried out on laboratory compression-ignition engine in conditions of its supply with a non-standard marine fuel oil. Configuration and measuring capability of laboratory test bed presently being constructed were introduced....

Simulations of Shear Zones and Cracks in Engineering Materials Using eXtended Finite Element Method
PublikacjaNumerical simulations of cracks and shear zones in quasi-brittle materials are presented. Extended Finite Element Method is used to describe both cracks and shear zones. In a description of tensile cracks, a Rankine criterion is assumed. A discrete Mohr-Coulomb law is adopted for simulations of shear zones. Results of simple numerical tests: unixial tension, bending and biaxial compression are demonstrated.
