Experimental and numerical evaluation of mechanical behaviour of composite structural insulated wall panels under edgewise compression
PublikacjaA composite structural insulated sandwich panel (CSIP) is a quite novel approach to the idea of sandwich structures. A series of natural-scale experimental test is required each time a change in panel’s geometry is planned and a reliable computational tool is required to precede actual laboratory testing with virtual simulations. An attempt of creating such a tool has been made with use of a commercial FEM code ABAQUS, in order...

Numerical Determination of the Load-Bearing Capacity of a Perforated Thin-Walled Beam in a Structural System with a Steel Grating
PublikacjaThis article presents the results of numerical simulations of a structural system consisting of steel perforated thin-walled beams and a steel grating. The simulations were conducted using the finite element method. The analysis took into account physical and geometric nonlinearity as well as the contact between the steel grating and the beams. The main goal of the research was to develop load-bearing curves for the main beam in...

Nonlinear finite element modeling of vibration control of plane rod-type structural members with integrated piezoelectric patches
PublikacjaThis paper addresses modeling and finite element analysis of the transient large-amplitude vibration response of thin rod-type structures (e.g., plane curved beams, arches, ring shells) and its control by integrated piezoelectric layers. A geometrically nonlinear finite beam element for the analysis of piezolaminated structures is developed that is based on the Bernoulli hypothesis and the assumptions of small strains and finite...

Edgewise Compressive Behavior of Composite Structural Insulated Panels with Magnesium Oxide Board Facings
PublikacjaEdgewise compression response of a composite structural insulated panel (CSIP) with magnesium oxide board facings was investigated. The discussed CSIP is a novel multifunctional sandwich panel introduced to the housing industry as a part of the wall, floor, and roof assemblies. The study aims to propose a computational tool for reliable prediction of failure modes of CSIPs subjected to concentric and eccentric axial loads. An advanced...

Experimental and numerical investigations of ultimate strength of degradated structures
PublikacjaThe presented work investigates the corrosion influence on the structural behaviour of structural elements. Nine welded large-scale stiffened plates, and 30 standard small specimens have been subjected to the accelerated marine immersed conditions. After corrosion testing, the specimens have been accurately measured in terms of surface characteristics. The coupon specimens were furtherly subjected to tensile loading to develop...

NONLINEAR VIBRATION ANALYSIS OF BEAM AND PLATE WITH CLOSED CRACK: A REVIEW
PublikacjaThe effect of nonlinearity is high sensitivity in damage detection, especially for closed cracks and delamination. This review illustrates the results of several researchers dealing with nonlinear effects caused by the closure of cracks in the structure, i.e., beam and plate structures. Early detection of damage is an important aspect for the structure and, therefore, continuous progress is being made in developing new and effective...

An enhanced method in predicting tensile behaviour of corroded thick steel plate specimens by using random field approach
PublikacjaThe present work investigates the possibility of using random field techniques in modelling the mechanical behaviour of corroded thick steel plate specimens. The nonlinear Finite Element method, employing the explicit dynamic solver, is used to analyse the mechanical properties of typical specimens. A material model considering full nonlinearity is used to evaluate the stress-strain response. The influence of major governing parameters...

Study on deformed steel columns subjected to impact load due to soft-storey failure in buildings during earthquakes
PublikacjaThe so called soft-storey failure is one of the most typical types of damage induced in buildings as the result of earthquake excitation. It has been observed during ground motions that the failure of an upper soft storey of a structure results in large vertical impact load acting on the lower floors. If the resistance of the structural members of the lower storeys is not sufficient it may further lead to progressive collapse of...

Nonlocal Vibration of Carbon/Boron-Nitride Nano-hetero-structure in Thermal and Magnetic Fields by means of Nonlinear Finite Element Method
PublikacjaHybrid nanotubes composed of carbon and boron-nitride nanotubes have manifested as innovative building blocks to exploit the exceptional features of both structures simultaneously. On the other hand, by mixing with other types of materials, the fabrication of relatively large nanotubes would be feasible in the case of macroscale applications. In the current article, a nonlinear finite element formulation is employed to deal with...

On a 3D material modelling of smart nanocomposite structures
PublikacjaSmart composites (SCs) are utilized in electro-mechanical systems such as actuators and energy harvesters. Typically, thin-walled components such as beams, plates, and shells are employed as structural elements to achieve the mechanical behavior desired in these composites. SCs exhibit various advanced properties, ranging from lower order phenomena like piezoelectricity and piezomagneticity, to higher order effects including flexoelectricity...

The equations for interactions of polarization modes in optical fibres including the kerr effect
PublikacjaWe have derived coupled nonlinear Schro¨ dinger equations (CNLSE) for arbitrary polarized light propagation in a single-mode fibre employing electromagnetic field complete description. We used a basis of transverse eigenmodes with appropriate projecting; hence, the nonlinear constants depend on the waveguide geometry. Accounting for a weak nonlinearity, which is connected to the Kerr effect, we have given explicit expressions for...

Nonlinearity shaping in nanostructured glass-diamond hybrid materials for optical fiber preforms
PublikacjaNanodiamond integration with optical fibers has proved a compelling methodology for magneto-optics. We reveal that the applicability of nanodiamonds in nonlinear optics goes beyond the previous demonstrations of frequency converters. Instead, we exploit the recently reported volumetric integration of nanodiamonds along the optical fiber core and show that the nonlinear response of glasses can be manipulated by nanodiamonds. By...

Studies of Nonlinear Sound Dynamics in Fluids Based on the Caloric Equation of State
PublikacjaThe sound speed and parameters of nonlinearity B/A, C/A in a fluid are expressed in terms of coefficients in the Taylor series expansion of an excess internal energy, in powers of excess pressure and density. That allows to conclude about features of the sound propagation in fluids, the internal energy of which is known as a function of pressure and density. The sound speed and parameters of nonlinearity in the mixture consisting...

New equations which govern the sound in media where the irreversible relaxation may take place are derived and discussed. Their form depends on the regime of excitation of oscillatory degrees of freedom, equilibrium (reversible) or non-equilibrium (irreversible), and on the comparative frequency of the sound in relation to...

The reasons for generation of vorticity are nonlinearity, diffraction, and dispersion. Acoustic streaming differs from that in a Newtonian fluid. Under some conditions, the vortex flow changes its direction. Conclusions concern streaming induced by a harmonic or an impulse Gaussian beam.
