Facing the brainstorming theory. A case of requirements elicitation
PublikacjaKnowledge is still considered to be power and its externalization makes it possible for others to use that power. In this paper, we examine the theory of brainstorming, and the claim by father Alex Osborn that in a group session an individual can think of twice as many ideas than working alone. In the context of requirements elicitation, we performed an experiment on a “nominal” and a “real” group of participants, following a procedure...

Contextualizing a Knowledge Base by Approximation – A Case Study
PublikacjaModular knowledge bases give their users opportunity to store and access knowledge at different levels of generality. In this paper we present how to organize a modular knowledge bases organized into contexts in which a user can express their knowledge in much simplified way, yet without losing its precision. The work is centered around the notion of approximation - i.e. reducing the arity of predicates used. The presentation is...

Applying case studies to teaching architectural investment
PublikacjaCase studies enable students to encounter practical issues during their education. Experiments conducted in class employing this method often feature simplified models of real-world situations. However, they still enable students to encounter actual problems, to which theoretical knowledge is applied. In architectural education, students carrying out semester projects usually rely on data provided by the teacher, without wondering...

It is not OK but it works – unproductive entrepreneurship, the case of Poland
PublikacjaThe concept of unproductive entrepreneurs was introduced to science by Baumol, who pointed out the differences in business output between countries. Unproductive behaviour of entrepreneurs is often a consequence of ineffective institutions used by entrepreneurs for rent seeking. The aim of this article is to examine subjective norms (S.N.) and attitudes regarding specified types of unproductive entrepreneurship, which in many cases...

Sprzętowa i programowa realizacja algorytmu szyfrującego AES = Hardware and software implementation of AES algorithm
PublikacjaW artykule przedstawiono sprzętową i programową realizację algorytmu szyfrującego i deszyfrującego AES. Obydwie implementacje zostały zrealizowane z wykorzystaniem platformy Virtex-II i praktycznie zweryfikowane. Jako kryteria do porównania wybrano: zużycie zasobów, przepustowość i zużycie mocy. Wersja sprzętowa charakteryzuje się 190-krotnie większą przepustowością, 80-krotnie mniejszym zużyciem energii na przetworzenie jednego...

Wetlands in flux: looking for the drivers in a central European case
PublikacjaPlanet Earth is undergoing significant changes which are driven by natural and anthropogenic factors. However, it is difficult to identify the drivers and their effect on the environment and ecosystems because there are many interdependencies. In this study we present a multi-parameter approach to assess the effect of changes in human-induced and natural drivers on a wetland ecosystem. The study area is one of the most prominent...

Visual perception of vowels from static and dynamic cues
PublikacjaThe purpose of the study was to analyse human identification of Polish vowels from static and dynamic durationally slowed visual cues. A total of 152 participants identified 6 Polish vowels produced by 4 speakers from static (still images) and dynamic (videos) cues. The results show that 59% of static vowels and 63% of dynamic vowels were successfully identified. There was a strong confusion between vowels within front, central,...

Local Nusselt number evaluation in the case of jet impingement
PublikacjaJet impingement still is one of demanding cases regarding computational fluid dynamics, due to its highly turbulent behaviour, with occurrence of turbulent-laminar transition. Even recently developed methods exhibit some drawbacks – RANS based simulations lack accuracy, LES and DNS based ones require too much computational time. Hybrid methods also exist, but their development and validation is in progress. Nevertheless, CFD application...

Representing and appraising Toulmin model arguments in trust cases
PublikacjaThe paper presents a Toulmin-based argument model used in trust cases, which allows to argue various properties of IT systems. Argument patterns encountered in trust cases are discussed together with some real-life examples. A method of argument appraisal is introduced together with the corresponding aggregation mechanism. Practical applications of trust cases in industrial and research projects are outlined.

Supporting Compliance with Security Standards by Trust Case Templates
PublikacjaTrust Cases are used to justify that a given object (a system, an infrastructure, an organization) exhibits certain properties. One of possible applications of trust cases is related to the processes of achieving and demonstrating the compliance with standards. A Trust Case Template derived from a given standard constitutes a skeleton of justification (encompassing evidence and argumentation) of the compliance with the standard....

Adding Intelligence to Cars Using the Neural Knowledge DNA
PublikacjaIn this paper we propose a Neural Knowledge DNA based framework that is capable of learning from the car’s daily operation. The Neural Knowledge DNA is a novel knowledge representation and reasoning approach designed to support discovering, storing, reusing, improving, and sharing knowledge among machines and computing devices. We examine our framework for drivers' classification based on their driving behaviour. The experimental...

The dynamics of the total output of the fishery sector: The case of Indonesia
PublikacjaThe purpose of this study is to analyze the dynamics of the total output of the Indonesian fishery industry when the changes of the final demand occur. This study employs a demand-pull Input-Output (IO) quantity model, one of the calculation tools in the IO analysis, as an analysis instrument. Two conditions are noticed in calculation and analysis parts, namely (1) “whole sector change”, and (2) “pure change”. An initial period...

An Analysis of Contextual Aspects of Conceptualization: A Case Study and Prospects
PublikacjaIn this chapter we present a new approach to development of modularized knowledge bases. We argue that modularization should start from the very beginning of modeling, i.e. from the conceptualization stage. To make this feasible, we propose to exploit a context-oriented, semantic approach to modularization. This approach is based on the Structural Interpretation Model (SIM) presented earlier elsewhere. In the first part of thischapter...
