Effects of FSW Tool Plunge Depth on Properties of an Al-Mg-Si Alloy T-Joint: Thermomechanical Modeling and Experimental Evaluation
PublicationOne of the main challenging issues in friction stir welding (FSW) of stiffened structures is maximizing skin and flange mixing. Among the various parameters in FSW that can affect the quality of mixing between skin and flange is tool plunge depth (TPD). In this research, the effects of TPD during FSW of an Al-Mg-Si alloy T-joint are investigated. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method can help understand TPD effects on FSW...

Numerical Comparison of Damping Amplification Effects Obtained in Neighborhood of a Mechanism Singular Position - Viscous and Electromagnetic Cases
PublicationIn the paper, results of numerical investigations are presented. A continuous beam is considered as the main vibrating element. Two energy dissipations methods are compared: viscous dampers and DC generators. To increase the damping effectiveness, velocity amplification is proposed, i.e., a mechanism is introduced between the beam and the damping element, and the mechanism configuration is set as closed to the singular position...

In the system, a continuous beam is considered as the main vibrating element. The compared dissipations methods are based on: viscous dampers and DC generators. To increase the possible damping effectiveness, velocity amplification is proposed, i.e., a mechanism is introduced between the beam and the damping element....

Guided waves for monitoring of plate structures with linear cracks of variable length
PublicationDamage occurring at the work of plate structures may grow to a considerable size. The joint action – the detection of a defect at the earliest possible stage, the monitoring of its growth and the determination of its critical size in the context of structural reliability allows optimizing the cost of the maintenance and repair of structural elements. Thus the development of monitoring systems for permanent observation of fault...

Electron Scattering from Methyl Formate (HCOOCH3): A Joint Theoretical and Experimental Study
PublicationElastic low-energy electron collisions with methyl formate have been studied theoretically at the level of various theories. The elastic integral cross section was calculated using Schwinger multichannel and R-matrix methods, in the static-exchange and static-exchange plus polarization levels of approximations for energies up to 15 eV. The absolute total cross section for electron scattering from methyl formate has been measured...

Single-phase, Five-level Inverter with SPWM-Based Neutral Point Voltage Balancing Scheme
PublicationMultilevel inverter topologies provide several advantages over two-level inverter configuration. These benefits are the reason for the growing interest in multilevel topologies among research society. One of the most popular topological concepts (diode and active switch clamping) requires neutral-point potential balancing due to series-connected capacitor banks across the input dc link in such derived inverter configurations. This...

Based on the previously conducted experimental study, a numerical model of the tested fragment of the CFS truss with eccentricity in the joint was created and validated. All structural details of the tested truss and the...

Scaling scrum with a customized nexus framework: A report from a joint industry‐academia research project
Publicationespite a wide range of scaling frameworks available, large-scale agile transformations are not straightforward undertakings. Few organizations have structures in place that fit the predefined workflows – while once one applies an off-the-shelf framework outside of its prescribed process, guidance quickly runs out. In this paper, we demonstrate how to instantiate a method configuration process using a lightweight experimental approach...

Gossiping by energy-constrained mobile agents in tree networks
PublicationEvery node of an edge-weighted tree network contains a data packet. At some nodes are placed mobile agents, each one possessing an amount of energy (not necessarily the same for all agents). While walking along the network, the agents spend the energy proportionally to the distance traveled and collect copies of the data packets present at the visited network nodes. An agent visiting a node deposits there copies of all currently...

Possibility of thermal imaging use in studies of natural convection heat transfer on the example of an isothermal vertical plate.
PublicationA new method of infrared (IR) camera use in convective heat transfer studies has been presented. Until now, IR cameras were utilized for temperature field visualizations of flat heated surfaces of solid objects only. Because liquids and gasses do not emit radiation in the infrared range of wave lengths, detection of temperature field in the air was conducted with the use of plastic mesh, which, after heating by hot air, emits infrared...
