  W artykule przedstawiono wymagania stawiane sieciom przemysłowym oraz te cechy i mechanizmy sieci Ethernet, które wspierają idee przemysłowego Ethernetu. Zwrócono także uwagę na istniejące nadal ograniczenia pełnego zastąpienia tradycyjnych sieci przemysłowych jedną technologią Ethernet.
