Improving listeners' experience for movie playback through enhancing dialogue clarity in soundtracks
PublicationThis paper presents a method for improving users' quality of experience through processing of movie soundtracks. The dialogue clarity enhancement algorithms were introduced for detecting dialogue in movie soundtrack mixes and then for amplifying the dialogue components. The front channel signals (left, right, center) are analyzed in the frequency domain. The selected partials in the center channel signal, which yield high disparity...

Self-tuning adaptive frequency tracker
PublicationAn automatic gain tuning algorithm is proposed for a recently introduced adaptive notch filter. Theoretical analysis and simulations show that, under Gaussian random-walk type assumptions, the proposed extension is capable of adjusting adaptation gains of the filter so as to minimize the mean-squared frequency tracking error without prior knowledge of the true frequency trajectory. A simplified one degree of freedom version of...

Localization of impulsive disturbances in audio signals using template matching
PublicationIn this paper, a new solution to the problem of elimination of impulsive disturbances from audio signals, based on the matched filtering technique, is proposed. The new approach stems from the observation that a large proportion of noise pulses corrupting audio recordings have highly repetitive shapes that match several typical “patterns”. In many cases a representative set of exemplary pulse waveforms can be extracted from the...

Identification of nonstationary multivariate autoregressive processes– Comparison of competitive and collaborative strategies for joint selection of estimation bandwidth and model order
PublicationThe problem of identification of multivariate autoregressive processes (systems or signals) with unknown and possibly time-varying model order and time-varying rate of parameter variation is considered and solved using parallel estimation approach. Under this approach, several local estimation algorithms, with different order and bandwidth settings, are run simultaneously and compared based on their predictive performance. First,...

Digitalization of Building Site Management in the Construction Industry
PublicationWith Industry 4.0, a digital transformation has started in the construction industry. However, 4.0 technologies have difficulties in the integration of digital systems due to the diversity and complexity of the processes in the construction industry. Multidisciplinary work in architectural projects and the need for high productivity require digital renovation planning in the construction industry. The application of the technologies...

Hydraulics and hydrology
e-Learning CoursesFor the purpose of this course we are interested in the engineering aspect of hydrology, or what might call engineering hydrology. From this point of view we are mainly concerned with quantifying amounts of water at various locations as function of time for surface water applications. Solving engineering problems using hydrologic principles.

E-Estonia as a role model? Some general considerations and applicability in France
PublicationEstonia has recently been widely recognised – in the policy circles, academia, as well as the media space – as one of the more advanced nation states when it comes to digital government (and governance) transformation (e.g. Margetts and Naumann, 2017; Heller, 2017). Ever greater attention Estonia attracted with the two most recent digital government initiatives, namely the e-Residency and the virtual data embassy, both first of...

Wpływ strat mechanicznych w siłowniku teleskopowym zespołu zagęszczającego w pojeździe do usuwania odpadów z pojemników na skuteczność prasowania odpadów
PublicationHydraulic telescopic cylinders are used to power the moving wall of rear loader garbage trucks equipped with the traditional "sweep and slide" system. As the garbage compression force is directly dependent on the resistance force of the moving wall, losses in the hydraulic telescopic cylinder influence the compaction process. Taking them into account in the control system may improve the operation of the compaction...

Just Let Me Think: Designing Against Acquired Illiteracy.
PublicationThis article concerns the relatively new problem of illiteracy relating to persons previously being literate, which is caused by too intensive using of so-called digital media (TV, computers, tablets, smartphones, e-book readers, portable media players, etc.). The problem has been observed for several years mainly in countries with high economic and technological development. The widespread use of digital media and the ease of...

Problem of Clogging in Drainage Systems in the Examples of the Zur and Podgaje Dams
PublicationDrainage plays an extremely important role in hydraulic structures, such as earth dams. Observations of drainage in hydraulic structures under various soil conditions indicate that the phenomenon of clogging can lead to a radical reduction in the efficiency of drainage, making it non-functional within a few years after construction. This article describes the problems of drainage clogging by iron oxide in the examples of the Zur...

Transmission Quality Measurements in DAB+ Broadcast System
PublicationIn the age of digital media, delivering broadcast content to customers at an acceptable level of quality is one of the most challenging tasks. The most important factor is the efficient use of available resources, including bandwidth. An appropriate way of managing the digital multiplex is essential for both the economic and technical issues. In this paper we describe transmission quality measurements in the DAB+ broadcast system....

The Methodology for Determining the Theoretical Based on the Characteristics of Effective Absorbency Versus Pressure Drop in the Motor
PublicationThis article describes a method for determining the theoretical and actual working volume of a hydraulic motor. It has been shown that the actual working volume of the motor is the sum of the theoretical working volume and the additional volume that depends on the pressure drop in the working chambers of the motor. It was also shown that the volumetric losses in the hydraulic motor are not only a function of the pressure drop in...
