Turning maneuver as a potential cause of the next stability failure mode for a ship in operation
PublicationThe only formal stability-related requirement referring to a turning maneuver of a ship results from the IS Codeand its application is limited to passenger ships only. The goal of the adopted criterion is to prevent an excessiveangle of heel in turn. Likewise, the remaining prescriptive criteria, this one is simply based on the concept ofa threshold that must not be exceeded. In this case, the angle of heel...

Potential energy surfaces of the low-lying electronic states of the Li+LiCs system
PublicationAb initio quantum chemistry calculations are performed for the mixed alkali triatomic system. Global minima of the ground and first excited doublet states of the trimer are found and Born-Oppenheimer potential energy surfaces of the Li atom interacting with the LiCs molecule were calculated for these states. The lithium atom is placed at various distances and bond angles from the lithium-caesium dimer. Three-body nonadditive forces...

Nitrogen-doped diamond thin films: potential application in Fabry-Pérot interferometer
PublicationIn this paper we present results of preliminary research of using nitrogen-doped diamond (NDD) films as reflective layer in Fabry-Pérot interferometer. NDD films were deposited on Si substrates by Microwave Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (MPECVD) with the use of CH4, H2 and N2 gas mixtures. During deposition process methane flow rate varied while nitrogen flow was constant. We performed series of measurements which showed...

The potential of enhancing denitrification in the activated sludge process with by-products from the alcohol production
PublicationIn this study, by-products from the alcohol production were examined in terms of their potential application as external carbon sources for enhancing denitrification in biological nutrient removal systems. Three kinds of experimental assays were used to compare the effects of the by-products with other external carbon sources (ethanol and acetic acid) and the settled wastewater. Based on the results obtained, it appears that one...

Recurrent potential pulse technique for improvement of glucose sensing ability of 3D polypyrrole
PublicationIn this work, a new approach for using a 3D polypyrrole (PPy) conducting polymer as a sensing material for glucose detection is proposed. Polypyrrole is electrochemically polymerized on a platinum screen-printed electrode in an aqueous solution of lithium perchlorate and pyrrole. PPy exhibits a high electroactive surface area and high electrochemical stability, which results in it having excellent electrocatalytic properties. The...

Coffee silverskin as a potential bio-based antioxidant for polymer materials: Brief review
PublicationCoffee silverskin is one of the by-products generated by the coffee industry. Although it is not the most burdensome one, because it stands only for ~4.2 wt % of coffee, it seems like an auspicious raw material for industrial processes. Coffee silverskin is characterized by a relatively low moisture content of ~5–7%, so it often does not require quite energy-consuming drying processes. The chemical composition of coffee silverskin,...

About nutrient liquid flow between potential flow and cartilage surface in bioreactor
PublicationW niniejszej pracy wyznaczony został przepływ cieczy odżywczej o właściwościach nienewtonowskich w cienkiej warstwie granicznej w pobliżu powierzchni komórek chrząstki (chondrocytu) podczas hodowli w bioreaktorze. Ruch cieczy w warstwie granicznej jest wywołany wydatkiem przepływu dostarczanej cieczy do bioreaktora. Ponadto prędkość przepływu cieczy w warstwie granicznej wokół hodowanych komórek chrząstki stawowej jest uzależniona...

Homoclinic solutions for a class of autonomous second order Hamiltonian systems with a superquadratic potential
PublicationW niniejszej pracy udowodniliśmy istnienie nietrywialnego rozwiązania homoklinicznego dla autonomicznych układów Hamiltona drugiego rzędu z nadkwadratowym potencjałem. Orbitę homokliniczną otrzymaliśmy jako słabą granicę ciągu punktów prawie krytycznych, stosując zasadę minimaks do odpowiedniego funkcjonału akcji oraz prosty argument typu ''concentration-compactness''.

Influence of hydrogen on a nanocrystalline high-entropy oxide with application potential in hydrogen technologies
PublicationThe influence of hydrogen on a (Co0⋅2Cu0⋅2Mg0⋅2Ni0⋅2Zn0.2)O HEO with a rock salt structure was studied. Two forms of this HEO (nanopowder and sinter) were prepared via mechanochemical synthesis (MS) and additional heat treatment, respectively. The chemical stability of the synthesized samples in a pure hydrogen atmosphere was investigated using Sievert’s technique. High-pressure hydrogenation at 250 ◦C had no noticeable effect...

Changes in gene methylation patterns in neonatal murine hearts: Implications for the regenerative potential
PublicationBackground The neonatal murine heart is able to regenerate after severe injury; this capacity however, quickly diminishes and it is lost within the first week of life. DNA methylation is an epigenetic mechanism which plays a crucial role in development and gene expression regulation. Under investigation here are the changes in DNA methylation and gene expression patterns which accompany the loss of regenerative potential. Results The...

Computer-Aided Calculations of Earth Potential Rise in High Voltage Overhead Lines
PublicationHigh voltage overhead power lines with earth wires comprise towers made of conductive material. Some towers are in locations where people can be expected to be either for a long time or for a short time but very frequently. Evaluation of shock hazard near such towers requires calculation of line-to-earth short-circuit current, earth current and especially earth potential rise. Number of towers in high voltage power lines can exceed...

Effect Of Resveratrol And Quercetin On Telomerase Regulation In Cancer Cells And Their Anti-Cancer Potential
PublicationTelomeres and telomerase are nowadays one on targets for anticancer therapy. Telomerase is expressed in ~90% of human cancer cell lines and tumor specimens, whereas its enzymatic activity is not detectable in most human somatic cells. Was found that some dietary compounds can modulate telomerase activity in cancer cells. This review summarizes the current knowledge about the effects of resveratrol and quercetin on telomerase regulation...

Endothelial dysfunction due to eNOS uncoupling: molecular mechanisms as potential therapeutic targets
PublicationNitric oxide (NO) is one of the most important molecules released by endothelial cells, and its antiatherogenic properties support cardiovascular homeostasis. Diminished NO bioavailability is a common hallmark of endothelial dysfunction underlying the patho‑ genesis of the cardiovascular disease. Vascular NO is synthesized by endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) from the substrate L‑arginine (L‑Arg), with tetrahydrobiopterin...
