Journey towards light – evolutionary adaptations of humans, flora and fauna. Guidelines for safe and healthy illumination
PublicationThe paper examines using relatively recent discoveries on how evolution has embedded within all living organisms a natural sensitivity towards their native environment, in particular luminance levels and specific wavelengths of light. The studies conducted so far indicate that lighting installations that are visible after dark impact on humans, flora and fauna and influence our evolutionary dispositions, possibly with negative...

Evolutionary sets of safe ship trajectories with speed reduction manoeuvres within traffic separation schemes
PublicationIn the previous paper the author presented the evolutionary ship trajectory planning method designed to support Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS). This time the extensions of this method are described which allow to combine evolutionary trajectory planning with speed reduction manoeuvres. On TSS regions with higher than usual density of traffic and smaller distances between ships, the course alterations alone are not always sufficient...

W-dominance: Tradeoff-inspired dominance relation for preference-based evolutionary multi-objective optimization
PublicationThe paper presents a method of incorporating decision maker preferences into multi-objective meta-heuristics. It is based on tradeoffcoefficients and extends their applicability from bi-objective to multi-objective. The method assumes that a decision maker specifies a priori each objective’s importance as a weight interval. Based on this, w-dominance relation is introduced, which extends Pareto dominance. By replacing reference...

Evolution towards simplicity in bacterial small heat shock protein system
PublicationEvolution can tinker with multi-protein machines and replace them with simpler single-protein systems performing equivalent functions in an equally efficient manner. It is unclear how, on a molecular level, such simplification can arise. With ancestral reconstruction and biochemical analysis, we have traced the evolution of bacterial small heat shock proteins (sHsp), which help to refold proteins from aggregates using either two...

Spatial Evolution of the European Container Ports’ System in Perspective of the Location Theory
PublicationThe maritime container terminal is nowadays a spatially incoherent object. From the functional point of view it ends, where their most external components are located. The process of location splitting of container terminals is a new phase of their discrete growth. The external container facilities are being built to improve effectivness of the logistic chain in the hinterland. The new components of container terminals have very...

THE INFLUENCE OF THE EVOLUTION OF DAYLIGHTING SYSTEMS OF EXHIBITION SPACE ON THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE MUSEUM'S BUILDING
PublicationThe paper deals with the architecture of museums as dependent on the ways of lighting the exhibition space. The work focuses on the analysis of the influence of daylighting systems on shaping the museum's architecture in the period from the Renaissance to modern times. The method of work includes studying literature and the case study of the objects characteristic of the presented concepts and lighting systems. The results of the...

Evolution of Edges and Porosity of Urban Blue Spaces: A Case Study of Gdańsk
PublicationCurrent waterfront studies focus mainly on a land-based perspective, failing to include the water side. Water is, however, not just a resource for port and industrial purposes and an edge to the waterfront; it is also a feature of the waterfront and the complex relation between water and city. Thus, the article suggests that water-land edges need to be re-contextualised, taking into consideration also their shape, functionality,...

Shear band evolution phenomena in direct shear test modelled with DEM.
PublicationA direct shear test is widely used in the geotechnical engineering field. It is an easy and quick test to measure the shear properties of soil. This test often replaces more expensive and difficult tri-axial shear test. Despite that the direct shear test is known and used for a long time, it is still not well investigated at the grain scale. This paper deals with the micro behaviour of the cohesionless sand inside the direct shear...

Public Perception of Intangible Benefits and Costs in the Valuation of Mega Sports Events: The Case of Euro 2012 in Poland
PublicationThis article estimates the intangible benefits and costs of Euro 2012 in Poland. Using the contingent valuation method (CVM), a study was conducted among residents of all four host regions of the event and one nonhost region. This provided the basis for determining the net intangible benefit arising from Poland’s hosting of the European football championships (Euro 2012), which was estimated at 5.3 billion PLN2012. The aggregate...

PublicationIn this paper we analyse the relationship between technological innovation in the artificial intelligence (AI) domain and macroeconomic productivity. We embed recently released data on patents and publications related to AI in an augmented model of productivity growth, which we estimate for the OECD countries and compare to an extended sample including non-OECD countries. Our estimates provide evidence in favour of the modern...

The demand for skills and the labor cost in partner countries: evidence from the enlarged EU
PublicationWe analyse the consequences of trade integration in Europe (1995-2005) detecting how thelabor costs in partner countries affects the demand for domestic high- and low-skilled labor inthe EU-15 (Old) and five New member states. In general, independently on the skill level, the resultshint at complementarity between domestic and foreign labor. However, the demand for thehigh skilled in New EU members' low skill intensive sectors...

Enhancing Economic Development Through ICT-Based Governance: Evidence for Developing Countries
Publicationhis shows novel empirical evidence on how e-government solutions enhance the emergence of inclusive societies, increase institutional quality, and through that channels dynamize economic development in developing countries. With this aim we examine digital development inequalities adopting 2 core ICT indicators: mobile cellular telephony and Internet users; and gross per capita income and Human Development Index to show the level...

Technology convergence and digital divides. A country-level evidence for the period 2000–2010
PublicationThe paper, mostly empirical in nature, investigates issues on cross-national new information and communication technologies (ICTs) adoption patterns and growth directions. In the period of 2000–2010, a great number of countries underwent substantial changes on the field of ICTs implementation. Many of them made a great “jump” starting with almost “zero level” of ICTs adoption in the year 2000 and during the ten- year period were...
