Can the Pandemic Be a Catalyst of Spatial Changes Leading Towards the Smart City?
PublicationThe worldwide spread of Covid‐19 infections has had a pervasive influence on cities and the lives of their residents. The current crisis has highlighted many urban problems, including those related to the functionality of urban structures, which directly affect the quality of life. Concurrently, the notion of “smart cities” is becoming a dominant trend in the discourse on urban development. At the intersection of these two phenomena,...

Connected early-career experiences of equality in academia during the pandemic and beyond: Our liminal journey
PublicationIn this paper, we draw on our subjective experiences as two female early-career academics during the global COVID-19 pandemic. While we acknowledge that the pandemic had negative implications for many female scholars due to compulsory telework or increased family responsibilities, we also want to shed light on the empowering experiences shaped by collegial support that became an important part of our pandemic story. We build on...

t-SNE Highlights Phylogenetic and Temporal Patterns of SARS-CoV-2 Spike and Nucleocapsid Protein Evolution
PublicationWe propose applying t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding to protein sequences of SARS-CoV-2 to construct, visualize and study the evolutionary space of the coronavirus. The basic idea is to explore the COVID-19 evolution space by using modern manifold learning techniques applied to evolutionary distances between variants. Evolutionary distances have been calculated based on the structures of the nucleocapsid and spike proteins.

A Formal Approach to Model the Expansion of Natural Events: The Case of Infectious Diseases
PublicationA formal approach to modeling the expansion of natural events is presented in this paper. Since the mathematical, statistical or computational methods used are not relevant for development, a modular framework is carried out that guides from the external observation down to the innermost level of the variables that have to appear in the future mathematical-computational formalization. As an example we analyze the expansion of Covid-19....

Machine-aided detection of SARS-CoV-2 from complete blood count
PublicationThe current gold standard for SARS-CoV-2 detection methods lacks the functionality to perform population screening. Complete blood count (CBC) tests are a cost-effective way to reach a wide range of people – e.g. according to the data of the Central Statistical Office of Poland from 2016, there are 3,000 blood diagnostic laboratories in Poland, and 46% of Polish people have at least one CBC test per year. In our work, we show...
