Research on Linear Actuators for Active Foil Bearings
PublicationActive foil bearings are a kind of gas foil bearing. They contain actuators which allow for modification of the bearing sleeve size and the shape of the lubrication gap. Rotor vibrations can be actively controlled by these changes. It is possible, among other things, to reduce the starting torque, control the vibration amplitude at different speeds and improve operational safety. Prototypes of active foil bearings are being developed...

Investigation of the Effect of the Rocket's Suborbital Flight on Biofilm, Enzymes and Biosynthesis on Autonomous, Modular and Scalable Platforms For Conducting Experiments of an Astrobiotechnological Nature
PublicationWith new incentives for human space exploration, biotechnological experiments in orbit became imperative. Answering this need, we build an autonomous, modular, and scalable platform that enables those experiments on rockets. We called it AMBER. The aim of the payload of the R6 suborbital rocket is to perform an experiment to study the influence of rocket flights on biofilm, molecular biology enzymes and biosynthesis using our platform....

The Method of Finding the Optimal Spindle Speed When Milling Flexible Details
PublicationThe paper presents a new method of vibration reduction during milling of flexible details. The method consists in selecting the optimal spindle speed, based on the natural frequency of the workpiece. For this purpose, an original method was created, which is based on minimizing the work of cutting forces in the direction of the depth of cutting. The effectiveness of the method has been proved by comparing the RMS values of vibration...

The effect of circular saw blade clamping diameter on its resonant frequencies
PublicationIn this paper results of comparison of characteristic resonant frequencies of circular saw blades as a function of saw clamping diameter from the impact test are presented. Obtained results revealed that proportionally with the increase of the saw clamping diameter also the dynamical stiffness of the saw blade increased. As a consequence of that the resonant frequencies of the saw blade move to higher values. Moreover, with the...

Numerical Investigation on Dynamic Performance of a Multi-storey Steel Structure Model and Comparison with Experimental Results
PublicationShaking table testing is the most commonly adopted method to simulate earthquake forces. This approach allows us to analyze the dynamic performance and provides a valuable insight into the dynamics of building structures, which helps to improve their future safety and reliability. The present study aims to conduct a numerical evaluation of dynamic response of a multi-storey steel structure model, which was previously examined during...

Study on applicability of two modal identification techniques in irrelevant cases
PublicationStudy on applicability of two modal identification techniques in irrelevant cases is made in this paper. The following techniques are considered: Peak Picking based on correlation analysis (PP-CA), dedicated for ambient vibrations and Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA), formulated for free decay vibrations investigation. Irrelevant cases are found when analyzed signals are different than recommended to a given technique. The...

Optimization of clamping stiffness during milling of high-dimensional structures with the use of techniques of experiment – aided virtual prototyping
PublicationThe subject of this paper is a method of searching for conditions of minimizing the vibration level of a tool-high dimensional flexible workpiece, at unchangeable technological parameters of the machining process. It depends on repeatable change of the values of the stiffness coefficients as soon as an optimal vibration state of the workpiece approaches. There are assessed the values of dominant ”peaks” in the frequency spectra...

Diagnosis of damages in family buildings using neural networks
PublicationThe article concerns a problem of damages in family buildings, which result from traffic-induced vibrations. These vibrations arise from various causes and their size is influenced by many factors. The most important is the type of a road, type and weight of vehicles that run on the road, type and condition of the road surface, the distance from the house to the source of vibrations and many others which should be taken into account....

Detection of Delamination in Laminate Wind Turbine Blades Using One-Dimensional Wavelet Analysis of Modal Responses
PublicationThis paper demonstrates the effectiveness of a nondestructive diagnostic technique used to determine the location and size of delamination in laminated coatings of wind turbine blades. This is realized based on results of numerical and experimental investigations obtained by the use of the finite element method (FEM) and laser scanning vibrometry (LSV). The proposed method is based on the one-dimensional continuous wavelet transform...

An approach for the response of buildings subjected to impact load after soft-story failure due to earthquake excitation
Publicationhe soft-story failure is one of the most typical types of damage observed in buildings during earthquakes. The failure of an intermediate soft story of a structure results in large impact loading acting on the lower floors due to the fall of the upper stories. The aim of the present paper is to study the behavior of the structural members exposed to such extreme load conditions occurring under ground motion excitation. Special...

Numerical study on pounding between two adjacent buildings under earthquake excitation
PublicationSeismic excitation, which results in large horizontal relative displacements, may cause collisions between two adjacent structures due to insufficient separation distance between them. Such collisions, known as earthquake-induced structural pounding, may induce severe damages. In this paper, the case of pounding between two adjacent buildings is studied by the application of single degree-of-freedom structural models. Impact is...

Dynamics Conscious Approach to Tribometer Design and Tribo-testing
PublicationIn the paper findings are discussed on the issue of dynamic characteristics of a tribometer as a factor influencing the result of the tribological experiment. An advanced approach to tribo-testing is attempted with integrated dynamic analysis of the tribometer and the sliding pair. The fundamental idea is explored of the tribometer being regarded as any machine in which friction is inflicted with all the resulting consequences...
