A Numerical Model Study on Grasse River Ice Control Structures
PublicationIce jams in the Grasse River have caused the erosion of capping material designed to prevent the resurfacing of the bed sediment in the PCB-contaminated area. Two in-stream ice-control structures are proposed to avoid the jam-induced erosion of the capping material. These two ice-control options are a pier-type ice-control structure and a reconstruction of a small hydropower dam upstream of the capping site. A numerical model study...

Thermal imaging in automatic rodent’s social behaviour analysis
PublicationLaboratory rodent social behaviour analysis is an extremely important task for biological, medical and pharmacological researches. In this work thermal images features that facilitate analysis are presented. Methods to distinguish objects on the basis of thermal distribution are tested. Actions of grooming or biting one rodent by another - important social behaviour incidents - are clearly visible...

Poly-L-Lysine-modified boron-doped diamond electrodes for the amperometric detection of nucleic acid bases
PublicationBoron-doped diamond (BDD) is a very promising supporting material used in the construction of biosensors for molecular recognition. The direct immobilization of structurally-organized huge molecules, such as poly-L-Lysine (PLL) provides the possibility of determining organic molecules, e.g. nucleic acid bases (e.g. adenine, guanine) or peptides and proteins. This paper describes the direct method for chemical and electrochemical...

PCR detection of Scopulariopsis brevicaulis
PublicationScopulariopsis brevicaulis is known as a most common etiological factor of the mould toenail infections. There are also reports indicating that S. brevicaulis could cause organ and disseminated infections. Nowadays microscopic observations from the direct sample and culture are crucial for the appropriate recognition of the infection. In this paper is presented a PCR-based method for S. brevicaulis detection. The specificity of...

Experimental Determination of Limit Adhesive Shear Strtess between Solid Wall and Liquid
PublicationTheoretically slip of a fluid with respect to the solid wall should occur even at a very low velocity of motion. However theoretical analysisand some empirical data suggest that there must be a limit value of shear stress, below which the slip does not appear. A simple metyhod of this stress determination was proposed in the paper.

Acute hypoxia diminishes the relationship between blood pressure and subarachnoid space width oscillations at the human cardiac frequency
PublicationAcute hypoxia exerts strong effects on the cardiovascular system. Heart-generated pulsatile cerebrospinal fluid motion is recognised as a key factor ensuring brain homeostasis. We aimed to assess changes in heart-generated coupling between blood pressure and subarachnoid space width oscillations during hypoxic exposure.

Troubleshooting of the determination of bisphenol A at ultra-trace levels by liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry
PublicationDetermination of trace amounts of bisphenol A (BPA) may cause problems mainly related to the presence of BPA in solvents (even in LC-MS grade), laboratory vessels, and plastic equipment used for sample preparation. Variable and sometimes significant amounts of BPA present in the background cause problems in obtaining good repeatability of measurements at the ultra-trace levels. Such observations (i.e., poor repeatability of results)...

Modelling of blood flow: from macro to microscales
PublicationThe aim of this paper it to review various scale approaches to blood flow modelling. Blood motion may be described by three types of mathematical models according to the observed scales or resolutions, namely microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic description. The above approaches are discussed together with their advantages and disadvantages. Several results of mesoscopic simulations are presented.

Gravity-related research (2020/21)
e-Learning CoursesThe goal of the subject is to extend of the knowledge gained in the framework of general mechanics (statics, kinematics, dynamics). Students will be familiarized with the description of the kinematics and dynamics of motion in typical gravity-related research conditions (microgravity in parabolic flights, drop towers, sounding rockets) as well as gravity-related research platforms, its opportunities and limitations. Additionally,...

Influence of Additional Loads on Chosen Gait Parameters and Muscles Activity
PublicationThis paper is devoted to human motion analysis and comparison of chosen kinematics parameters during normal gait with and without additional load in a form of backpack. A stability in both cases were compared in both frontal and sagittal planes, by applying a video tracking system. Experimental tests performed on treadmill, passive markers, placed on volunteers bare skin were used. Additionally, an infra-red camera was employed...

Job satisfaction in the multicultural environment of multinational corporations
PublicationPurpose – Since prior research into the effects of multiculturalism on job satisfaction in multinational corporations (MNCs) is rather scant and inconclusive, the authors attempt to review the literature and explain why these results are inconsistent as well as propose a new model aimed at responding to these irregularities. Design/methodology/approach – In the narrative review of the prior research and the proposed model the...

Techniques of acquiring additional features of the responses of individual gas sensors
PublicationGas sensors usually exhibit lack of selectivity, require fre quent calibration, exhibit drift of the response and a lot of factors, such as humidity or ambient temperature, influen ce their performance. Different approaches can be used to overcome this shortcomings. Building arrays of different sensors and usage of pattern recognition methods to analyze responses of elements...

Positivity and job burnout in emergency personnel: examining linear and curvilinear relationship
PublicationThe aim of this study was to examine whether the relationship between the ratio of job-related positive to negative emotions (positivity ratio) and job burnout is best described as linear or curvilinear. Participants were 89 police officers (12% women) and 86 firefighters. The positivity ratio was evaluated using the Job-related Affective Wellbeing Scale (Van Katwyk, Fox, Spector, & Kelloway, 2000). Exhaustion and disengagement,...

Analysis of abrasive particle trajectories during single-sided lapping process with driven conditioning ring
PublicationIn this paper new kinematics systems were studied for a single lapping process. In order to ensure the constant profile wear of the tool a standard kinematic system can be changed. Lapping is carried out by applying loose abrasive grains between two surfaces and causes a relative motion between them. The result is a finish of multi-directional lay. During process, the mechanism of surface formation are decisively affected by a...

Hydraulic equations for vortex separators dimensioning
PublicationThe paper presents a set of hydraulic expressions developed to design vortex separators. These devices are used for gravitational removal of suspensions from wastewater. Measurements and theoretical considerations allowed the authors to formulate a mathematically simple velocity field model. Than, equations describing particle motion in the separator were derived. Finally, a technical procedure for hydraulic design of vortex separators...
